METHODS: The effects were described as the changes of 1) absolute lymphocyte counts; 2) CD4 counts; 3) CD8 counts and 4) CD4/CD8 ratio. Of course, complete blood counts, liver function, determination of immunoglobulin and etc. were examined. 400 ml (800 units) of glycyrrhizin/day was infused every day. RESULTS: Absolute lymphocytes, CD4 and CD4/CD8 ratio elevated in all patients. 4 patients have good qualities of life now. In addition, glycyrrhizin could relief the bone marrow suppression as a side effect of AZT. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The administration of glycyrrhizin was considered to be effective to prevent the development to AIDS.
