Research was carried out by the Regional Epidemiologic Observatory, the Ligurian Tumour Registry, the Regional Mortality Registry and three Infectious Diseases Departments. METHODS: In the first part of the study we considered only AIDS cases notified in people living in Genoa and older than 14 years of age. Only AIDS cases notified prior to December 31, 1991, or AIDS related death registered after January 1, 1988, were taken into account. In this way it was possible to link data from the different registers. RESULTS: In accordance with the inclusion criteria, 233 males and 84 females were enrolled in the study. Forty-two neoplasms were registered in this cohort, with an AIDS-neoplasm association equal to 13%. The relative risks, computed on the basis of incidence registered in the Genoese population, showed a noteworthy increase of neoplastic risk. DISCUSSION: This research shows an AIDS-neoplasm association analogous to that already highlighted in literature. In particular it was possible to show an increased risk of testicular seminoma, lung cancer and uterine cervix carcinoma. It seems therefore interesting to continue this study, taking into consideration also anti-HIV subjects not yet notified as AIDS cases.
