Document 2944 DOCN M94A2944 TI Preferential depletion of rectal lamina propria CD4+ lymphocytes. DT 9412 AU Clayton F; Reka S; Kotler DP; St. Luke's/Roosevelt Hosp Ctr, New York, NY 10025. SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):189 (abstract no. PB0185). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369631 AB OBJECTIVE: To compare changes in mucosal lymphoid populations during disease progression. METHODS: We performed quantitative histologic and immunohistochemical stains in 61 subjects; 7 with CD4 > 500 (Early), 24 with CD4 < 500 (Middle), 23 AIDS (Late), and 7 controls. Frozen rectal biopsies had stains for T and B lymphocytes, macrophages, and immunoglobulins, plus histopathology. RESULTS: The percentages and numbers of CD4 in lamina propria (LP) were decreased in Early, compared in lymphoid aggregates (LA) and blood (PBL), while CD8 percentages and numbers rose during disease progression. B lymphocytes, macrophages, and plasma cells did not vary. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: There is preferential depletion of CD4 from LP during disease progression. As LP CD4 are memory cells while LA CD4 are naive cells, the results could reflect differences in susceptibility to infection or lysis. The early loss of LP CD4 could promote immunoregulatory defects. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME.
