Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369567 AB OBJECTIVE: To determine 1) therapeutic response of sublingual alfa interferon, 2) the cause of death in case of AIDS-associated Kaposis sarcoma. METHODS: An autopsy study was carried out on a 35 year old female who presented with large papulonodular lesions on extremities for which she was treated with sublingual alfa interferon. RESULTS: Autopsy revealed disappearance of lesions of Kaposi's sarcoma over extremities. Microscopic lesions of KS were noted in tongue, epiglottis, lung, stomach, intestine and pancreas. Disseminated mycobacterial infection was noted in lungs, lymph nodes, liver, spleen, kidney, adrenals and uterus. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The lesions of Kaposi's sarcoma on skin regressed with sublingual alfa interferon. However microscopic lesions of KS were noted. The cause of death was due to disseminated mycobacteriosis. Larger clinical trials with sublingual alfa interferon in addition to management of associated opportunistic infections is recommended.
