SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):17 (abstract no. 040C). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369546 AB The introduction of HIV virus in to Malaysia was estimated to be around the early 1980's. The first case of AIDS was reported here in 1986. As of December 1993, the numbers have increased to 7400 HIV positive individuals detected in the country. The majority of them were detected amongst the intravenous drug users (77.8%), 1.80% in prostitutes; of those who were positive, 1.14% were heterosexuals. Pediatrics AIDS constitutes 0.2% of those positives. The trend of HIV infection in this country seems to be highest amongst the intravenous drug users. The increasing numbers of HIV infected prostitutes and the heterosexuals in our population is worrying. At the University Hospital, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 1986 to date, we have seen and treated a total of 96 HIV positive individuals; of these 25 have already died and 70 are still alive. Of the 70 still alive, 5 have symptomatic disease. The most common AIDS-defining illness is Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia. Education programs have been developed targetting at the various high risk groups, and also at the general population.
