Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369534 AB OBJECTIVE: Analysis of changes in the serum concentration of neopterin (NPT) in HIV infected IVDUs in relation to current using or not using intravenous drugs. METHODS: NPT concentrations were measured using radioimmunoassay (IMMUtest Neopterin-Henning Berlin) in the serum of 34 HIV positive asymptomatic IVDUs. Twenty of them abstained from drugs for several months to more than a year (group A), the other 14 were active drug users (group B). Testing was carried out repeatedly in 3-6 months intervals. RESULTS: The results showed that mean NPT concentrations were higher than normal in both groups (A-12, 32 +/- 4, 75, B-14, 58 +/- 5, 26 nmol/l). After 6-12 months of observation, NPT concentrations decreased in the group A (10, 98 +/- 2, 77 nmol/l) and significantly increased in the group B (23, 89 +/- 7, 7 nmol/l). CONCLUSIONS: In the assessment of the prognostic value of NPT concentration in HIV infected IVDUs the behavioral aspects must be considered.
