SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):159 (abstract no. PB0064). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369497 AB OBJECTIVE: Report the frequency and types of otolaryngological (ENT) manifestations in various stages of HIV infections. METHODS: HIV infected patients with ENT symptoms were examined. They were seen by one specialist that didn't know about the stage of HIV infection. RESULTS: The majority were male (50 = 87.7%), between 21 and 49 years. Eleven patients were asymptomatic (group II of CDC) and 46 had AIDS (group IV). In group II, six (54.5%) had diseases related to lymphoid hyperplasia: Cervical lymphadenomegaly in 3, parotid gland enlargement in 2 and adenoidal hypertrophy in 1. Hairy leukoplakia was present in 2 cases. In group IV sinusitis was present in 22 (47.8%) and oral candidiasis in 11 (23.9%). Kaposi's sarcoma occurred in 6 (13.0) cases and 4 of them involved the hard palate. CONCLUSIONS: Diseases related to cervical lymphoid hyperplasia is frequent in early HIV infection, while infections dominate late stages. These findings emphasize the role of the ENT specialist in the early diagnosis of HIV infection and in the control of its complications.
