Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369493 AB OBJECTIVE: 2'5'-oligoadenylate synthetase (2-5AS) has been reported to be induced by interferons (IFN) and its activity in mononuclear cells reliably reflects activation of the IFN system by viral infections. To evaluated the immuno-status in HIV disease and the progression of the disease, serum 2-5AS activities in hemophiliacs were measured. METHODS: Serum 2-5AS activities in 28 hemophiliacs, fifteen HIV seropositive and thirteen HIV seronegative patients. The correlations between serum 2-5AS activity and the other conventional Aparameters for the evaluation of immunostatus were also examined. RESULTS: Serum 2-5AS activity in HIV seropositive hemophiliacs was significantly higher than in HIV seronegative hemophiliacs. In HIV seropositive hemophiliacs, serum 2-5AS activities were negatively correlated with CD4+ lymphocytes and CD4+/CD8+ ratio. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed that serum 2-5AS activity was elevated by HIV infection and might be useful marker to evaluate the immuno-status in HIV disease. Further study confirm the correlation between 2-5AS activity and clinical stage of HIV suggested to be needed.
