Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369478 AB OBJECTIVE: To study the changing proportions of subsets of CD4 and CD8 cells over time in a cohort of asymptomatic HIV+ve patients. This work is being undertaken to aid in delineation of disease progression. METHODS: Blood samples obtained at yearly intervals from 21 patients were stained for 3 colour immunofluorescence. Control blood was obtained from 21 age matched subjects at low risk for HIV. The following combinations of antibodies were used: CD3/CD4/CD56/CD8; HLA-DR/CD38/CD8; CD45RA/CD45RO/CD8; TCR alpha beta/TCR gamma delta. RESULTS: % of lymphocytes binding antibody: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSION: The phenotypic profile of CD4 and CD8 subsets change with time. For example, a decrease in the number of CD8+/CD45RA+/CD45RO+ was noted. Increased expression of the activation markers HLA-DR and CD38 occur early in the course of infection and persist. Such changes may have progostic significance. Studies are ongoing.
