SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):149 (abstract no. PB0024). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369453 AB The importance of Herpesvirus (Epstein-Barr Virus, Citomegalo Virus, Herpes Simplex Virus, Varicella zoster Virus) infections in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome is not well established. A study of the serological profiles against Herpesvirus was carried out in HIV2 samples of patients attending an out-patient clinic. Forty-two HIV2 positives cases were distributed by signs and symptoms; 27 (64%) asymptomatic, 15 (36%) symptomatic. The distribution by race and sex showed that 28 (67%) black, 14 (33%) caucasian, 27 (64%) males, 15 (36%) females. The following age groups were identified, 10-19 years 2 cases (5%), 20-29 years 10 cases (24%), 30-39 years 7 cases (17%), 40-49 years 15 cases (37%), 50-59 years 4 cases (10%) and over 60 years 3 cases (7%). At the Laboratory of Virology of the National Institute of Health sera samples were titrated using the indirect immunofluorescence assays. Most sera had IgG anti-EBV antibodies (96%), IgG anti-CMV antibodies (93%), IgG anti-HSV antibodies (100%), IgG anti-VZV antibodies (95%) and all the 96% IgG anti-EBV had IgG anti-Epstein-Barr Nuclear Antigen (EBNA) positives. Concerning the IgM antibodies we found two cases of IgM anti-EBV positives and one case of IgM anti-CMV positive. High titres were observed for the following virus: EBV, 1/160 12 cases (29%), 1/320 16 cases (38%), 1/640 7 cases (17%): CMV, 1/40 12 cases (29%), 1/80 13 cases (31%), 1/160 8 cases (19%); HSV, 1/160 17 cases (41%), 1/320 16 cases (38%), 1/640 7 cases (17%); VZV 1/20 9 cases (21%), 1/40 15 cases (36%), 1/80 11 cases (28%). The two cases of IgM anti-EBV antibodies positives, one had a IgG titre 1/160 and the other had a IgG titre 1/320. The case with IgM anti-CMV antibodies positives had a IgG titre 1/160. We found higher titres for the antibodies anti-EBV and anti-HSV than those found in the portuguese population in general. Additionally the titres of IgG antibodies anti-CMV and anti-VZV were similar to those found in the general population. In summary we don't know if the presence of high levels of these antibodies for the EBV and HSV are due to the reactivation of the virus or are markers or cofactors in the development of severe disease.
