To investigate the association of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) with various DNA viruses e.g. Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Citomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), simultaneous determinations of HIV p24 antigen (HIVp24Ag), HBV surface antigen (HBsAg) and DNA, CMV DNA and EBV DNA were performed in lymphocyte culture supernatants from 54 individuals at risk of HIV infection. In 25 patients all viral determinations cited above could be done: in 10 patients, simultaneous expression of all viruses was detected, 12 patients resulted negative for expression of all viruses and 3 resulted positive for some other virus in absence of HIVp24Ag. In 29 patients determination of all viruses was not possible: 14 were positive for HIVp24Ag expression and in all of them simultaneous expression of some other virus was detected, 15 were HIVp24Ag negative in culture supernatants but in 13 of them some other viral expression was always detected being only the remaining 2 patients negative for all other virus tested. Thus, HIV expression in lymphocyte culture supernatants never occurred alone as expression of some other virus was always detected in the 24 patients expressing HIV antigen in vitro from the 54 patients tested. Furthermore, 16 patients were positive for the determination of some other viral expression in the absence of HIV expression and 14 were negative for all viruses tested.
