 AB    OBJECTIVE: To determine if a causal relationship exists between systemic
       corticosteroid (CS) use (greater than 1 week) and the development of
       active cytomegalovirus disease (CMV), Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), and
       cryptococcosis (Cr) in HIV+ patients with low CD4 cells. METHODS: Out of
       256 adult patients with CD4 counts < 100/mm3 who were seen between April
       1990 and January 1993, 90 charts were randomly selected for review.
       Patients were divided into 2 groups: CS vs non-CS. Patients were
       followed for up to 12 months (less if patients died or were lost to
       follow-up). CMV, KS, and Cr events during this period were recorded.
       RESULTS: Thirty-one of 90 patients received CS. Six events (19%)
       occurred in 31 patients who received CS (2 CMV, 4 KS), and fourteen
       events occurred in 13 patients (22%) who did not receive CS (8 CMV, 4
       KS, 2 Cr) (P = 0.5 by Fisher's exact test). TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT

       use of CS and the development of CMV, KS, or Cr in this group of
       patients.
