Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369400 AB OBJECTIVE: Recently, Mashhadi Jews immigrated from Iran to Israel and people in some part of Russia such as Saharin and Turkmenistan were reported to have high prevalences of HTLV-I. To clarify phylogenetic relations, HTLV-I newly isolated in these loci and India were compared with others reported previously. METHODS: A part of LTR sequences was amplified from DNA of seropositive subjects by PCR. Their proviral DNA were sequenced and phylogenetically analyzed. RESULTS: Phylogenetic analysis evidently showed that both Iranian jewish and Indian HTLV-I were included to subtype A of cosmopolitan type, which consists of those from Caribbean basin, Japan and South America. The isolates of Iran formed a distinct cluster in subtype A, while Indian isolates did not cluster. Sequence analysis of Russian samples are in progress and will be presented. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The isolates of Iran, India, Japan, Caribbean Basin and South America have the definite relation each other and subtype A is spread over a large area. This finding is interesting in elucidating the origin and evolution of HTLV-I.
