Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369392 AB OBJECTIVE: To study HTLV-I prevalence among native people inhabiting Far Eastern Russia with special attention to Nivkhi people from Sakhalin intimately connected with Ainu people before 1945. The latters revealed high level of HTLV-I seroprevalence when have been tested in Hokkaido. METHODS: Two commercial screening tests as well as various confirmatory assays including WPs with recombinant gp46 env and p40 tax and PCR analysis were used to detect HTLV-I carriers. PCR was also employed to discriminate between HTLV-I and HTLV-II. RESULTS: 16 of 1809 native individuals tested were finally recognized as HTLV-I positive. Among them 14 were representatives of Nivkhi people (2.25%), 1--Orochi people (1.2%) and 1--Negidalian people (1%). The other 6 groups of native people were found to be negative. Important, 13 of 14 HTLV-I infected Nivkhi people were inhbitants of the same settlement (Nogliki) in Sakhalin (5.2%). Experiments indicated that HTLV-I rather than HTLV-II is present in infected individuals. CONCLUSIONS: This study clearly demonstrates that: a) Nivkhi people are most HTLV-I infected among different natives inhabiting Far Eastern regions of Russia, b) a cluster of HTLV-I infection is present among Nivkhi people in Sakhalin; and d) HTLV-I infected Nivkhi people revealed unusual pattern of virus-specific antibodies consisting in discrepancy between low immune response and high PCR positivity level.
