METHODS: 100 sera, 92 classified as HIV inconclusive (ELISA reactive but not confirmed by HIV WB), and 8 WB+ were tested using one of two HTLV WB (1.2, Diagnostic Biotechnology; or HTLV-I/II, Cambridge Biotech). 30 sera had been negative by HIV WB, while 62 had produced indeterminate results. RESULTS: None of the sera tested were confirmed positive for HTLV by WB. However, 19/92 (20%) of sera from individuals with indeterminate HIV status showed cross reactivity with HTLV. Cross reactivity was observed in 25% (16/62) of the HIV ELISA+/WB indeterminate sera and 10% (3/30) of the ELISA+/WB negative sera. None of the sera from HIV WB+ individuals exhibited cross reactivity to HTLV. Among patients with reactivity to both HIV and HTLV, 11/16 (69%) reacted to gag proteins from both viruses, while 0/16 reacted to env proteins from both viruses. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: We have previously observed that HIV WB+ sera do not usually recognize HTLV proteins by WB. Therefore, it appears that cross reactivity observed in sera from individuals who are indeterminate for both viruses by WB are not due to the recognition of HTLV proteins by antibodies against HIV. Possible explanations include: (1) non viral antigens with epitopes similar to retroviral proteins, and (2) expression of endogenous retroviral sequences.
