Document 3225 DOCN M94A3225 TI The role of nitric oxide in patients with HIV-1 infection. DT 9412 AU Torre D; Ferrario G; Bonetta G; Zeroli C; Giola M; Fiori GP; Div. Infectious Diseases, Varese, Italy. SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):124 (abstract no. PA0114). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369350 AB OBJECTIVE: Nitric oxide (NO) and its intermediates, nitrite and nitrate, exert microbiostatic and microbicidal effects against protozoa, fungi, bacteria and some viruses, including herpes simplex virus. NO modulates immune responses by mediating the regulation of lymphocyte proliferation and it influences local inflammatory reactions by altering adherence of neutrophils to endothelial surfaces. METHODS: Serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid levels of nitrite were measured colorimetrically by the Griess reaction, the absorbance was read at 550 nm. Data are expressed as micromoles of nitrite/liter. RESULTS: Normal levels of NO was noted in the sera of asymptomatic seropositive patients, in patients with HIV-1 encephalopathy, with cryptococcal meningitis, and in those with lymphoma. In contrast, increased levels of NO were noted in the sera (26.1 +/- 23.7 mumol/L; P < .0001) and in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (0.2 +/- 0.3 mumol/L; P = .0071). DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: It is likely that NO is produced in the lung during different processes, including host defense. NO may play a role in pulmonary cell-to-cell interactions and critical defense mechanisms of the host, in particular against opportunistic pathogens such as Pneumocystis carinii and Micobacterium sp.
