U.S. ROBOTICS OFFERS $200 SAVINGS ON ITU-TS 28.8 KBPS V.FAST TECHNOLOGY THROUGH SEPTEMBER 30, 1993 SKOKIE, Ill. -- July 2, 1993 -- U.S. Robotics, Inc., today announced a limited-time offer for a $99 upgrade to the ITU-TS (formerly CCITT) 28.8 Kbps/V.Fast standard with the purchase of a Courier modem. The offer gives Courier customers a $200 discount off the current upgrade price of $299. Upgrades will be available when the ITU-TS approves the 28.8 Kbps recommendation, expected in late 1993 or early 1994. All Courier V.32 bis or Dual Standard internal and external modems, with and without fax, are included in this special offer. For any of these modems purchased by September 30, customers will receive a certificate for $200 off the price of the 28.8 Kbps/V.Fast upgrade. Upgrade certificates are available through U.S. Robotics resellers; they may also be requested directly from U.S. Robotics. "We are committed to growing the very high-speed modem market -- this offer makes a V.Fast solution extremely affordable," said Marshall Toplansky, U.S. Robotics vice president of marketing. "Our solution not only lets our customers know up front how much this technology will cost and precisely how upgrades will be implemented, but also gives them an incredible value. The Courier V.32 bis modem, at a list price of $695, can be upgraded for $99, bringing the total cost of a V.Fast solution to less than $800 -- far less than most competitive products." U.S. Robotics' advanced modular modem architecture allows the company's current Courier V.32 bis, Courier HST Dual Standard and Courier HST external desktop modems, plus all Shared Access products, to be easily upgraded to 28.8 Kbps. The modems contain a motherboard and a smaller daughterboard, which holds the microprocessors and firmware. This daughterboard can quickly be replaced with a new board containing the 28.8 Kbps technology. The upgrade procedure takes less than five minutes, and can be performed in the field by the user, reducing unnecessary "down" time and eliminating excess shipping and handling costs. U.S. Robotics is the only modem manufacturer to implement this kind of flexible design. U.S. Robotics, Inc., (NASDAQ:USRX), is a leading designer, manufacturer and marketer of data communications systems and products.
