1 February, 1993 Issue No: TSN930102 Technical Support Note Product(s) involve : Sound Blaster 16 Advanced Signal Processor Third party card(s): Adaptec 154X SCSI host adaptors Subject Error message "DMA buffer allocation error" encountered when running in Windows 3.1 in enhanced mode. Description With ASPI4DOS.SYS loaded in CONFIG.SYS file (this driver is required to interface with CDROM connected to the adaptec SCSI host adaptor), running Windows 3.1 in enhanced mode will result in the above error described. Changing of hardware addresses/IRQs/DMAs on both cards does not solve the problem. Adding of other DMA related parameters in SYSTEM.INI file does not help either. Solution/Action This problem can be solved by appending a "/W" parameter at the end of the line that contains the ASPI4DOS.SYS in the CONFIG.SYS file. The actual command will look like the following after appending the "/W" parameter: DEVICE=C:\ASPI4DOS.SYS /W Remarks "/W" actually instruct the ASPI4DOS.SYS to allocate 64Kb of XMS or base memory to act as Virtual DMA buffer under enhanced mode. Feedback from distributor sites and users are encouraged and welcomed. 930102FG.DOC Technical Department, Creative Technology Ltd
