_______________________________________________________________ STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE Title: INACCESSIBLE REMOVABLE DRIVES (Applies to Stacker for Windows & DOS 3.0) STAC FAX 3506 (6/93) _______________________________________________________________ BACKGROUND When removable Stacker drives are not accessible, do not mount, or do not automount, the problem is generally due to a disk cache program such as SMARTDRV.EXE (from Windows 3.1) or PCKWIK. You may see one of these messages: Invalid Unit Reading Drive x OR Not Ready Reading Drive x Usually QEMM has loaded both Stacker and SMARTDRV.EXE high. A similar problem can occur with SMARTDRV.EXE and removable drives, such as Bernoulli, SyDos, SyQuest, and Sysgen, even if the removable drive is NOT a Stacker drive. SOLUTION The situation is corrected in the Stacker 3.03 maintenance release. Stacker now makes the drives accessible and the automount feature operate properly when DOS locates the drives. Contact Stac Product Support if you need the maintenance release to avoid this situation. You can add the /AUTO=Z switch now to fix your configuration. To add the switch: 1. Use any text editor to edit your CONFIG.SYS file and add this switch to the Stacker device driver line before the first Stacker drive name: /AUTO=Z 2. Save the file and exit to DOS. 3. Restart your computer. When both the Stacker and the disk cache drivers are loaded high, you may be able to use an additional SSWAP to swap the removable drive that has problems. For example, if D is a Bernoulli drive that won't mount, a special SSWAP line might correct the problem with SMARTDRV.EXE. _______________________________________________________________ Copyright 1993, Stac Electronics Page 1 of 2 1. Use any text editor to edit your CONFIG.SYS file and add this DEVICE line following any other SSWAP DEVICE commands. DEVICE=C:\STACKER\SSWAP.COM D: D: 2. Save the file and exit to DOS. 3. Restart your computer. If you still have problems and have a different cache program available, such as SMARTDRV.SYS or Speedcache for Iomega, try it out. It may eliminate the conflict. _______________________________________________________________ Copyright 1993, Stac Electronics Page 2 of 2
