INBOARD 386 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ The Inboard 386 is fully compatible with Windows 3.0 running in all operating modes: Real mode, Standard mode, and 386 Enhanced mode. INBOARD 386/PC ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ The Inboard 386/PC is compatible with Real mode of Windows 3.0 but not Enhanced mode. Standard mode will run on some computers which contain Inboard 386/PC but not others. REAL MODE Windows 3.0 is compatible with Inboard 386/PC in Real mode. You must use the command "WIN /R" to start Windows 3.0. If you don't, Windows will try to run in Standard or Enhanced mode because it sees the 80386 microprocessor. STANDARD MODE Windows 3.0 has been reported to run in Standard mode on the Inboard 386/PC in some systems but not in others. Variations in system boards, ROM BIOS, video cards, drive controllers, and other add-in boards can cause problems. If Standard mode does not run on your system, chances are it's because of something other than the Inboard 386/PC. For this reason Intel does not support running Windows 3.0 in Standard mode with Inboard 386/PC. If you wish to experiment with Standard mode operation, follow these guidelines: Be sure HIMEM.SYS loads after INBRDPC.SYS in your CONFIG.SYS file. Do not load the ILIM386.SYS program. Do not use any device on IRQ 2 or else the WIN /S command may lock up the system. A Microsoft bus mouse board or an ATI VGA card with mouse port are examples of devices that can use IRQ 2. Try using an alternate IRQ number. If you run into problems, contact the manufacturers of your system or other add-in boards for Windows 3.0 compatibility information. AT ROM BIOS, DMA channels and keyboard controller interface are examples of things that Windows 3.0 might need from a AT-type system that are not found in a PC/XT- type system. WINDOWS 3.0 AND 386 MEMORY MANAGERS ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Windows 3.0, in Real mode, is compatible with 386 memory managers like ILIM386 (which comes with the Inboard) or Quarterdeck's QEMM386. These programs allow Windows 3.0 to use EMS memory to run programs and store data. You can also use the LOADHI feature with QEMM386 to free up conventional memory. There are, however, a few limitations. In this mode, Windows 3.0 can't display more than one non-Windows program on screen at a time. This means if you're running Lotus 1-2-3, for example, you can't display another program in an overlapping window. Also Windows can't use your hard drive as "virtual memory" for swapping programs in and out of RAM. The 386 expanded memory manager that is shipped with Windows 3.0 is not compatible with the Inboard 386/PC. Use the ILIM386 program or QEMM386 instead. WINDOWS 3.0 AND DISK CACHING PROGRAMS ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Microsoft recommends not using Intel's ICACHE program with Windows 3.0. Use Microsoft's SMARTDRV.SYS if you desire disk caching. YOUR OPINION COUNTS ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ We encourage your input. If you are interested in a special version of Windows 3.0 for Inboard 386/PC, please let us know. Order document 9000 from our FaxBack service at: (800) 525-3019. FaxBack will FAX you a feature request form that, upon its return, will be passed to the Inboard Product Manager. Intel will measure demand for a special version of Windows 3.0 based upon returns of the FaxBack document. Your input is also relevant for Microsoft. They developed the existing Windows/386 for the Inboard 386/PC. To let them know that Windows 3.0 is important for Inboard 386/PC, contact Microsoft at (206) 454-2030.
