Run the computer's diagnostics software to verify that the computer is working correctly. Correct any error conditions before you install the Inboard 386/PC. Computers can have subtle problems that don't interfere with daily operations. Sometimes these problems go unnoticed until new hardware or software is installed. 2. Computers can be damaged by static discharge. You're less likely to discharge static electricity if you ground yourself by touching the metal back panel of your computer's system unit before beginning the installation. 3. Turn off the power switch on the system unit and unplug the power cord from the wall socket. 4. Remove the cover from the computer's system unit. 5. Remove ALL the boards in the computer. CONFIGURING CONVENTIONAL MEMORY ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ The computer won't operate correctly if more than one board provides the same conventional memory address. Because the Inboard 386/PC provides the full 640K bytes of conventional memory, you don't need additional conventional memory. The following instruction will disable conventional memory on the computer's system board so that the Inboard can supply the much faster 32-bit conventional memory: IF YOU HAVE THE LEADING EDGE 1 Install a jumper on the stake pins at J17 to disable the computer's conventional memory. If you don't have a jumper, your dealer can supply you with one. If you face the front of the computer, J17 is located near the front panel, just to the left of center. IF YOU HAVE THE LEADING EDGE 2 Remove the jumper on J23 to disable the computer's conventional memory. Use the chip puller that came with the Inboard PC or your fingers to carefully remove the jumper. If you face the front of the computer, jumper J23 is located in the center of the front left quarter of the system board. IF YOU HAVE THE LEADING EDGE 2A Remove the jumper on J14 to disable the computer's conventional memory. Use the chip puller that came with the Inboard PC or your fingers to carefully remove the jumper. Jumper J14 is centered in the third of the computer's system board closest to the front of the computer. DISABLING ADD-IN MEMORY BOARDS ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ If you have an add-in board providing conventional memory, you must disable its conventional memory. Your computer must now use the conventional memory provided by the Inboard 386/PC. For example, an Intel Above Board can provide both conventional and expanded memory. You don't need to stop using the Above Board if you set it to provide only expanded memory. REMOVING THE 8088 AND 8087 ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Both the 8087 (if present) and the 8088 need to be removed in order for the Inboard to work. 1. Find the 8088 and 8087 on the system board. If you're facing the front of the computer, the 8088 and 8087 will be located just left of center, about halfway between the front and back of the system board. In the Leading Edge 1s and 2s, the chip on the left is the 8088. In the Leading Edge 2As, the chip on the right is the 8088. 2. Use the chip puller that came with the Inboard 386/PC to gently ease the 8088 and 8087 from their sockets. SETTING THE MATH COPROCESSOR SWITCH Note: DO NOT use a pencil when changing switches, the graphite in the lead could short-circuit the switches. Use a ballpoint pen instead. 1. Find switch 2 on the computer's system board. If you're facing the front of the computer. the switch block is located on the system board near the front panel. In the Leading Edge 1s and 2s, the switch block is in the front left corner. In the Leading Edge 2As, the switch block is near the front, just left of center. 2. If you added an 80387 math coprocessor to the Inboard 386/PC, set switch 2 to OFF. If you didn't add an 80387 to the Inboard 386/PC, set switch 2 to ON. INSTALLING THE INBOARD PC CABLE The Inboard/386 PC cable has a connector at each end. One connector has two rows of pins and fits into the 8088 socket. The other has two rows of holes and connects to the socket on the Inboard 386/PC. 1. Orient the connector with pins so that pin 1 faces the same direction as the notch in the 8088 socket. If you're facing the front of the computer, the cable should extend from the socket to the left. 2. Align the pins with the socket, make sure no pins are bent, and then apply firm pressure until the connector will go no farther. INSTALLING THE INBOARD 386/PC ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Installing the Inboard PC into the correct slot ensures that the cable will reach from the 8088 socket to the Inboard 386/PC. Install the Inboard 386/PC in expansion slot 2 in the Leading Edge 1 and 2. Install the Inboard 386/PC in expansion slot 3 in the Leading Edge 2A. CONNECTING THE CABLE TO THE INBOARD 386/PC ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ Because of the location of the 8088 socket, you must twist the cable (without creasing it) to reach the Inboard PC. 1. Twist the cable in an "S" curve then align the free end of the cable with the cable connector on the Inboard 386/PC. 2. Support the Inboard 386/PC while applying even pressure to the cable connector until the connector will go no farther. 3. Flatten the cable by gently pressing it against the Inboard 386/PC. COMPLETING THE INSTALLATION 1. Replace any boards you removed from the computer, and reconnect any cables. 2. Replace the system unit's cover -- making sure the cover doesn't catch the Inboard 386/PC cable. 3. Plug the power cord back into the wall. 4. Set the clock speed selection switch on the Leading Edge 2 and 2A to 4.77 MHz. 5. Turn on the computer. It should count memory.
