WORD 3.0 and 3.1 work fine with EMM.SYS installed, however, the computer locks up during a Spell Check. HP acknowledges the problem and will make the necessary corrections. MICROSOFT WINDOWS 2.0 AND QUIKBUF Customer reports indicate that the Above Board's QUIKBUF2 program won't work with Windows 2.0, even if Windows' print spooler is disabled. MICROSOFT WINDOWS 2.03 Microsoft Windows 2.03 is incompatible with 6-MHz IBM PC AT BIOS version dated 1/10/84. Windows 2.03 works fine with the new 8-MHz BIOS. For all other computers, Windows doesn't work with the /E parameter in the SWAPDISK= line of the WIN.INI file. This is a problem with Windows. Even though the Windows manual says to use this parameter, remove it and use either the hard disk or a RAM disk drive letter as the SWAPDISK. Also designate a SWAPSIZE= on the next line (for example SWAPSIZE=1024 or SWAPSIZE=2048). (Field report) One user reported a problem with Windows 2.03 and an Above Board 286. The Windows manual says to disable memory down to 256K bytes to use Windows. Microsoft verified that the manual is incorrect, and you need to disable memory down to 256K bytes only when configuring mappable conventional memory using an Above Board PLUS or an AST RAMPAGE. MICROSOFT WINDOWS 386 This version of Windows has its own memory manager. Set Above Boards to provide all extended. "System not configured correctly" error = expanded memory installed. MICROSOFT WINDOWS 3.0 Microsoft Windows 3.0 is compatible with Above Boards. The optimum configuration varies depending on the computer. Here are Intel's recommendations. In a 386-based computer, set your Above Board for all extended memory. This allows Windows to run in 386 Enhanced mode. You can install Microsoft's EMM386.SYS to provide expanded memory for your applications that need expanded memory but don't run under Windows. In a 286-based computer, set your Above Board for all extended memory unless you have programs that require expanded memory. In these cases, set the Above Board to provide as much extended memory as possible while allowing enough expanded memory for your programs. This allows Windows to run in Standard mode. A minimum of 384K of extended memory is required. Be sure EMM.SYS is BEFORE HIMEM.SYS in the CONFIG.SYS. In an 8086/8088-based computer, set your Above Board for expanded memory. If your computer has less than 640K bytes of conventional memory, the Above Board may be able to backfill memory to 640K. NOTE: Microsoft's HIMEM.SYS "hides" all extended memory. CHKMEM will report 0K extended memory when HIMEM is installed. SLOW SCREEN UPDATE IN WINDOWS Occasionally, Windows screen updates will be extremely slow. If you have Intel's EMM (Expanded Memory Manager) set to provide mappable conventional memory, add the parameter MCL=9800 to the EMM.SYS command line in your CONFIG.SYS file. This should solve the problem. If it doesn't, something else is causing it. SMARTDRV.SYS & THE IBM PS/2 MODEL 30 286 Using SMARTDRV.SYS with extended memory locks up an IBM Model 30. Microsoft recognized this problem and released an update for the disk caching software. You should contact Microsoft if you have the problem and your SMARTDRV.SYS is dated before September 7, 1988. SMARTDRV.SYS is reported to work with expanded memory. SMARTDRIVE HIDES EXTENDED MEMORY SMARTDRV.SYS "hides" extended memory from the computer's BIOS, so CHKMEM and application programs (such as 1-2-3) don't recognize the memory. WINDOWS 386 & EXPANDED MEMORY Windows 386 does not conform to the LIM EMS spec. It will create expanded memory even if there are less than 4 page frames available. If there are less than 4 page frames, WIN386 will show expanded memory is present and it will use it. CHKMEM and VECHECK will also report expanded memory. However, applications will not recognize or use the expanded memory. (PageMaker, VEDEMO, Lotus 123, Quattro, Excel, etc.) Check for boards that might cause a page frame confict (network boards, scanner boards, VGA boards, etc.). If a problem persists after removing the page frame conflict, add the following statement to the WIN.INI file: EMMINCLUDE=XXXX-YYYY where XXXX is the starting address of the first page frame and YYYY is the ending address of the last page frame. Legal addresses are between C000 and DFFF. Example: EMMINCLUDE=D000-DFFF MS WORD AND RAM DISKS MS Word Manual has instructions for using Word with RAM disks. Version 2.0 Manual page 355 Version 3.0 Manual page 178 (second manual) MICROSOFT WORD 5.0 Microsoft Word 5.0 supports EMS 3.2 and 4.0. With expanded memory, Word can access larger files and do searches and other operations faster.
