The Above Board MC32 and the Token Ring boards can be installed following the normal Above Board MC32 instructions. However, if your Above Board 2, 2 Plus, or Above Board MC is configured as expanded memory or you're installing an Above Board 2 Plus into a system with a Token Ring 16/4 board, you must take steps to eliminate conflicts. Once you've installed the Above Board 2, 2 Plus, or MC there are two possible ways to configure the Token Ring and Above Board so they don't conflict. To decide which is best for your computer, boot to your IBM Reference diskette and select the options to "Set Configuration" and "Change Configuration". If you have a board (other than the Token Ring) using addresses that begin with "C", use option 1. If you have a board (other than the Token Ring) using addresses that begin with "D", use option 2. Note If you are installing an Above Board 2 Plus with the 16/4 or 1/2 Length board, the computer may lock up while booting to the hard drive if you use SOFTSET version 1.2 and have not set the Reserved Memory Address correctly in SOFTSET (Above Board Option diskette software part number 301290-004A). This is normal. Once you complete either of the following installation options, your computer will boot as usual. If you use SOFTSET version 2.0, you will only need to set a Reserved Memory address if you are installing an Above Board 2 Plus in a system running OS/2. Option 1: 1. Boot from your backup copy of the IBM Reference diskette for that specific system. 2. Use the "Change configuration" option of the IBM Reference disk menu to reposition the "Packet Buffer RAM Address" from the default D8000 to C4000 (or C8000 if there's a conflict at C4000). Leave the ROM address at CC000. 3. Press F10 to save the configuration. Exit the Reference disk program then boot to a DOS diskette. 4. Insert the Intel Option diskette and run SOFTSET. 5. Set the Reserved memory address to D000. Make whatever other setting you desire then press F10 to save the configuration. 6. Exit SOFTSET and reboot to your hard drive. 7. Update the Token Ring Shared RAM driver address: þ If there is a DXMC0MOD.SYS driver in the CONFIG.SYS file, add " ,C800 (if that's the address you used in step 3) to the DXMC0MOD.SYS command line. You must add a space in front of the comma! In this example the full line would read "DEVICE=DXMC0MOD.SYS ,C800" If you have the IPX driver in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, add "O,PRI,MEM=xxxx" to the IPX line, where xxxx is the address you'd like to move the Shared RAM address to. If you used C800 in step 3, the IPX line would look like "IPX O,PRI,MEM=C800" þ If you configured your Above Board as Expanded Memory, add "EXPF=D000" to the EMM.SYS command line (omit the " marks). Otherwise, go to the next step. þ Save the new CONFIG.SYS file. 8. Reboot the computer and you're done. Option 2: 1. Boot from your IBM Reference diskette. 2. Use the "Change configuration" option of the IBM Reference disk menu to reposition the "ROM Address" from the default CC000 to DC000. Leave the RAM address at D8000. 3. Press F10 to save the configuration. Exit the Reference disk program then boot to a DOS diskette. 4. Insert the Intel Option diskette and run SOFTSET. 5. Set the Reserved memory address to C000. Make whatever other setting you desire then press F10 to save the configuration. 6. Exit SOFTSET and reboot to your hard drive. 7. If you configured your Above Board as expanded memory, edit your CONFIG.SYS file and make these modifications: þ Add "EXPL=CC00" to the EMM.SYS command line (omit the " marks) 3COM If you receive parity errors when using a 3COM board with an Above Board and EMM 4.0, follow these steps: 1. Use the backup copy of the IBM Reference diskette for that specific system to reconfigure the 3COM board to an address of D800h to DDFFh (the highest possible choice). 2. Add the "EXPL=D400" parameter to the EMM command line in your CONFIG.SYS. This identifies the STARTING address of the last 16K bytes of the page frame. This means the page frame would end at D7FF. Later versions of EMM allow the use of "EXPL=D7FF" to achieve the same results. DAC NETWORK CARD We have received customer reports of compatibility with this network adaptor and Above Boards. Tech Notes: This board uses address D000-DFFF, and this address cannot be moved. This may be an issue if an Above Board is trying to provide expanded memory or when configuring the ROM Address for an Above Board MC. NORTHERN TELECOM LANSTAR This network board is compatible with the Above Board 2 Plus. We have not heard any customer reports concerning this network board and the Above Board MC. Tech Notes: The Lanstar board has a 16k ROM, which can be addressed at C000, C400, C800, CC00, D000, D400,D800,& DC00. Other settings are: DMA Level 5, Software Int. 66h, Interrupt 3. PDI UC508 ARCNET Customers report that this board is compatible with the Above Board 2 Plus. Tech Notes: The UC508 board has ROM which defaults to D000. If the Above Board is providing EXPanded memory, you might get "-111" errors unless you add the paramenter EXPL=CC00 to the EMM line in your CONFIG.SYS file. Apparently, EMM can't detect the start location of the PDI Arcnet ROM and partially overwrites it. Pure Data Ltd tech support in the United States is at ph: 416-731-6444. SMC ARCNET This board is compatible with the Above Board 2 Plus. We have no reports of compatibility issues between this network board and the Above Board MC. Tech Notes: The network board's ROM defaults to C000. You made need to set a Reserved Memory location in SOFTSET to not conflict with C000 if you are using an older version of SOFTSET (versions less than 2.0). The newer version may only require a Reserved Memory location if the system is using OS/2. UNGERMANN-BASS NICPS/2 ETHERNET This board is compatible with the Above Board 2 Plus. We have not tested this board with the Above Board MC or MC32, but we do not foresee any difficulties. Tech Notes: This network board uses 48k of address space in the C000-DFFF range using both a ROM and RAM address. Choose whichever addresses prevent conflicts with EMM or other devices. The options are: RAM: C000-C7FF, C800-CFFF, D000-D7FF, D800-DFFF ROM: C000-C3FF, C400-C7FF, C800-CBFF, CC00-CFFF, D000-D3FF, D400-D7FF, D800-DBFF, DC00-DFFF Intel recommends setting the RAM to C400, ROM to CC00 and adding the EXPF=D000 parameter to the EMM.SYS command line in the CONFIG.SYS file. WESTERN DIGITAL WD8003 ET/A This board is compatible with the Above Board 2 Plus. It has not been tested with the Above Board MC or MC32, but we do not foresee any issues between them. Tech Notes: It uses memory addresses C400-C7FF (16k), IRQ 3, I/O address 280. If you use the Above Board as expanded memory, add EXPF=C800 to EMM.SYS command line in CONFIG.SYS to prevent conflicts.
