Be sure to turn off the computer's power switch and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. If you don't, you could electrocute yourself. Warning: Danger to Equipment! RAM chips on SIMMs and other computer components can be damaged by static discharge. Be sure to ground yourself by touching a grounded object such as a metal part of the computer before touching your Above Board MC and your I/O Option board. INSTALLING THE ABOVE BOARD MC 1. Note speed of SIMMs and install extra SIMMs if desired. All SIMMs on the board must be the size: 256K bytes, 1M bytes, or 4M bytes. Install 100ns or faster SIMMs, use 85ns or faster for best performance. Install SIMMs in pairs for 16bit accesses, install SIMMs four at a time for 32-bit accesses (only the PS/2 systems that use an Intel 386DX or Intel 80486 CPU can take advantage of 32-bit accesses). 2. Install Intel I/O Option if desired, (see "Installing your I/O Option"). 3. Insert the Above Board in the computer. This is accomplished by turning off your computer and disconnecting the power cable from the wall outlet. Removing the computer cover and then the expansion slot silver end bracket (if you are unsure how to do this for your computer, refer to the IBM Quick Reference guide for your specific system). Insert the Above Board MC into an empty expansion slot (in 32bit systems choose a full lengthed 32bit slot for best performance). Put the computer's cover back on and reconnect the cables. 4. Boot to the backup copy of the IBM Reference diskette specific to that system. 5. Answer 'N' to "Automatically configure the system?" 6. Choose "Copy an option diskette" to copy the Intel option diskette to the Reference diskette. 7. Choose "Set configuration" from the main menu, then "Change configuration" from the submenu. 8. Select a ROM address for the Above Board. Only 1 Above Board MC ROM should be enabled, if you are installing more than 1 Above Board MC. 9. Select the SIMM speed for the SIMMs on your Above Board. 10. If you've installed an Intel I/O Option, select the port names for the serial and parallel port. 11. Save the configuration, exit and reboot your computer from the hard disk. 12. If you want the Above Board to supply only extended memory then the installation is complete. If you want the Above Board to supply any EXPanded memory, run the Intel SOFTSET program. 13. MCATEST is an Intel memory diagnostics program that can find malfunctioning or improperly installed SIMMs on microchannel Above Boards. Above Board MC I/O Option BEFORE YOU BEGIN: Warning: Danger to You! Be sure to turn off the computer's power switch and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Be sure to ground yourself by touching a grounded object such as a metal part of the computer before touching your I/O Option board. The Above Board MC I/O Option includes: o The Above Board MC I/O Option board o An end bracket o Two (2) thumb screws and washers o A tightening tool (not shown) for the thumb screws o A serial adapter cable (9-pin round to 25-pin D-shell) You will also need a small Phillips screwdriver with non-magnetized tip to complete the installation. The I/O Option board includes a plastic shield on the back of the board. Do not remove this shield. IF YOUR ABOVE BOARD MC IS ALREADY INSTALLED: If you have previously installed your Above Board MC, perform the following steps. If you are installing both the Above Board and the I/O Option board at the same time, start at "Installing your I/O Option" below. 1. Turn off the power switch for your computer. 2. Disconnect your computer's power cable from the wall outlet. 3. Remove the cover or side panel from your computer. 4. Note which expansion slot your Above Board is installed in. Yo u will need to return the Above Board to the same slot later. 5. Remove the Above Board from the expansion slot by: o loosening (but not removing) the board retaining screw. o grasping the Above Board by the upper corners and pulling upwards. 6. Lay the Above Board on a clean, dry, level work surface. 7. Go to Installing your I/O Option. INSTALLING YOUR I/O OPTION 1. If you are also adding SIMMs to your Above Board MC, follow step 1 of Installing the Above Board MC before proceeding. 2. Remove the two screws and nuts that hold the Above Board end bracket in place. Keep the screws and nuts; you will use them to attach the new end bracket. 3. Remove the end bracket and blue tab and put them to one side. 4. Remove the I/O Option, new end bracket, thumb screws, washers, tightening tool, and serial adapter cable from their bags and lay them on the work surface. (Place the I/O Option on its anti- static bag.) 5. Attach the new end bracket and the blue tab from step 3 to your Above Board using the screws and nuts that held the original end bracket. Note that the bracket edge goes under the board. It is easiest if you first loosely attach the screw and nut on the bracket end opposite the blue tab. Now insert the other screw and slip the blue tab over it before attaching the nut. Be sure the lock-washer side of the nut faces the board. 6. Holding the I/O Option at an angle, insert the oblong parallel connector through the hole in the end bracket. (The round serial connector will be flush with the hole.) 7. Line up the pins in the I/O Option connector with the holes in the Above Board connector. Apply gentle even pressure to seat the I/O Option in the Above Board connector. 8. Store the original end bracket. 9. Place a washer onto the threaded shaft of each thumb screw and attach the thumb screws to the new bracket. Use the tightening tool to tighten the thumb screws. Tighten the bracket retaining screws. Failure to attach the thumb screws may cause your I/O Option to violate FCC regulations. 10. If you are using the serial port, attach the 9-pin round end of the serial adapter cable to the serial port on the I/O Option board. 11. If your Above Board has not been configured (if this is a new installation of the Above Board MC), return to Step 3 of "Installing your Above Board MC". If your Above Board MC was previously configured in this system continue with Step 3 of "Installing your Above Board MC", but you it is very likely you can ignore steps 5 and 6 of that section (if the proper backup copy of the Reference diskette is used, and if the Above Board MC was put back into the slot it originally was, you will not get prompted if you want to run the Automatic configuration. If you do get asked this question, then follow steps 5 and 6 as they are listed in "Installing the Above Board MC".
