Category: IBM News Title: IBM PC DOS 6.1 Offers Reliability, Performance, Full-Featured Utilities Notice Expires: 11/21/93 June 29, 1993 IBM's Personal Software Products Division today introduced PC DOS 6.1, a full-featured, enhanced version of the DOS operating system that includes valuable utilities from three industry-leading vendors. PC DOS 6.1 is a robust product that includes utilities from Central Point Software, Inc.** for backup, memory management and scheduling, as well as IBM's AntiVirus technology. PC DOS 6.1 is the only DOS to ship with pen extensions that enable the use of a pen instead of a mouse and advanced software supporting PCMCIA cards, through an agreement with Phoenix Technologies Ltd. PC DOS 6.1 includes proven, award-winning data compression technology from Addstor, Inc. Addstor's SuperStor/DS** provides PC DOS 6.1 users with DoubleSpace-compatible real-time data compression. PC DOS 6.1, which will be generally available July 26, will ship with a coupon offering users a free upgrade to the AddStor compression product. PC DOS 6.1 with compression will be available later this year, once PSP has completed additional integration and useability testing of SuperStor/DS. PC DOS 6.1 uses less memory than previous versions of DOS. PC DOS 6.1 device drivers also allow users to free up additional lower memory by creating upper memory blocks out of unused memory on compatible video and Expanded Memory Specification (EMS) cards. PC DOS 6.1 has also been enhanced to perform certain functions faster than MS DOS 6, offering significant speed improvements when performing a wide range of common DOS functions such as running batch files, displaying screen characters and using ANSI commands. IBM will fully integrate a complete version of Addstor's SuperStor/DS into PC DOS 6.1. SuperStor/DS will run with DoubleSpace and the Microsoft Real-time Compression Interface specification, allowing for easy migration from DoubleSpace to SuperStor/DS. SuperStor/DS will offer real-time data compression that can up to double the capacity of fixed and removable disks and includes advanced features such as password protection, integral disk caching, enhanced memory management and support for Universal Data Exchange**, which ensures that compressed files on removable media can be read by a DOS system, even if compression software is not installed. PC DOS 6.1 also integrates full-featured utilities from Central Point Software, including Central Point Backup** (for DOS and DOS/Windows**), the RAMBoost** memory management utility, Undelete and a program scheduler. IBM's own AntiVirus utility allows PC DOS 6.1 users to scan for, identify and eliminate over 1,400 different common viruses. IBM's AntiVirus is a comprehensive "install-and-forget" automatic protection package which fights computer-virus attacks on DOS and Windows computing environments. PC DOS 6.1 also integrates PenDOS** extensions which add pen-enabled capabilities to many popular DOS applications, such as spreadsheets, databases, and word processors. With PC DOS 6.1, users can navigate most mouse-based DOS applications using a pen. A coupon is included which allows the user to fully upgrade to PenDOS capabilities. Included in each box of PC DOS 6.1 is a copy of Everyday DOS by QUE Publishing, one of the largest publishers of computer-related books. PC DOS 6.1 will be available July 26 at a suggested list price of $189 for the base product and $109 for the upgrade from a previous version of DOS. A special 90-day promotional offering of $59.99 is available by calling 1-800-342-6672. Additional savings are available if PC DOS 6.1 is purchased through software dealers. * Trademark or registered trademark of International Business Machines Corporation ** Trademark or registered trademark of Microsoft Corp., Communication Intelligence Corporation, Addstor Inc., or Central Point Software, Inc.
