More detailed installation instructions The files you need to set up hooked are either on a disk that you have inserted into drive A: (or perhaps B:), or in a directory on your hard drive. There should be about 50 files. Step 1 Your goal is to run a program called SETUP.EXE. Here's one way: Use the Program Manager. Click on the File menu item. When the list of commands apperars, click on Run. An input box will now pop up. If our files are in your A drive, type A:SETUP. (If they are in your B drive, type B:SETUP. If they are in a directory called C:\HKTEMP, then type C:\HKTEMP\SETUP.) Now press Enter or click on OK.. Step 2 The program you have just started will groan, click, beep, and whistle, and finally display a box asking you where (i.e, in which directory) you want to install the software. We suggest C:\HOOKED. However, you may use any valid MSDOS directory name. Step 3 Now, unless some errors are detected, the software will return (in a while) and tell you that the installation is complete. At this point, you will see that we have added a group, hooked, to your desktop Program Manager. Installation is complete. First Time? You will find the hooked icon in the hooked group, on your Desktop. Double click on the icon to get started. hooked will ask you whether you want a demo, or whether you have been assigned a valid username and password (assigned by our staff). Now, all you need to do is set up the phone (Phone Setup) and Dial. Phone Setup is easier than you think. Make sure that your modem is attached to the computer. Make sure that the modem is plugged into the telephone system. From the hooked Main window, click on Options. From the proffered list, click on Dialing and modem setup. Click on the appropriate buttons for Modem Speed and Comm Port. If you do not know what values to use, click on Don't Know. Dialing hooked is even easier. From the main hooked window, click on Dial. if you have been assigned a userid you can create it now, by clicking on the New button. Otherwise, you can select your userid (or select Demo). Click on Dial. After more clicks, hums and whirrs, you will find yourself connected to hooked.net. More Help Can be obtained once you have started the software. If you like, you can send email to staff@pipeline.com, instead. Some problems you may run into, and solutions.: 1. Message "Out-of-date copy of xxx" when attempting to start hooked. This probably means that another application has created a copy of xxx in the c:\windows directory. The safest thing to do is call us. If you prefer, you can rename the offending file (to get it out of the way) and try again. 2. Modem won't dial. Play with the following settings: Modem Speed, Modem Port. To test your modem and port, you can exit hooked, and check modem response in Windows Terminal (under Accessories). In Terminal, choose Settings...Communications, select the COM port, click OK, and type AT on the Terminal screen. If the modem communicating with Windows, it will return an OK. Typing ATDT should produce a dial tone, and typing ATH should hang up the modem. Otherwise, there is some problem with the modem, and you may need to try a different port. You can also use Ctrl-Esc to check your task list for other resident programs that may be interfering with use of the modem, such as fax or telecommunication programs. You will need to exit any of these programs before attempting to run hooked. 3. Modem dials and connects but password is rejected. Passwords are case-sensitive. Show the password and check the case. 3. Modem dials but hangs up after the connection is made, data is garbled or chopped, or a GPF (general protection fault) occurs. This is usually a problem with the Modem Setup String or the speed. Make sure that you have a modem rated for the speed you are trying to use. Lower the speed and try again. If you can connect, look up your optimal Modem Setup String under Hooked Information menu, and enter it under Options...Modem setup. You can also refer to your modem manual for the correct setup string, or call us.
