The cross-posting of articles to more than one newsgroup is discouraged, since at this time the e-mail subscribers will get multiple copies of any cross-posted articles. These mailing lists are administrated by David Kristofferson's BIOSCI service, which is funded by the US National Science Foundation for the express purpose of supporting computer networking among biologists. By supporting personal e-mail subscriptions to the bionet newsgroups, BIOSCI has effectively formed a bridge between biologists with e-mail and those with Usenet (once familiar with Usenet, few people have the patience for e-mail subscriptions). David Kristofferson is responsible for proposing the creation of the bionet domain of Usenet and starting many of the bionet newsgroups. Requests for e-mail subscriptions to bionet newsgroups are handled by biosci@net.bio.net (for requests from the Americas) and biosci@daresbury.ac.uk (for all others). A FAQ describing administrative details of the bionet newsgroups is available from biosci@net.bio.net or biosci@daresbury.ac.uk, and appears regularly in the bionet.announce newsgroup. Euclid Avenue St. Louis, MO 63110 USA The Biomedical Computer Laboratory (BCL) is designated as a "Resource for Biomedical Computing" by the National Institutes of Health's National Center for Research Resources (NCRR). A significant portion of the activities at the BCL are supported by NCRR's Biomedical Research Technology Program (BRTP) which promotes the application of advances in computer science and technology, engineering, mathematics, and the physical sciences to research problems in biology and medicine by supporting the development of advanced research technologies. In addition to supporting the development of new or improved technologies, the BRTP resource program encourages the use of those developments in collaborative research with biomedical research investigators nationally through both collaborative interactions and service-oriented relationships. BCL Program emphasis is on quantitative imaging including positron- emission tomography (PET) image reconstruction utilizing estimation-maximization (EM) methods, computational optical- sectioning microscopy, shape modeling and segmentation, electron- microscopic autoradiography (EMA), image acquisition and quantitative analysis of DNA electrophoretic gels and autoradiograms, and parallel processing. The Resource invites program participation by research investigators with relevant scientific interests. The participation can be either as a research collaborator or as a user of Resource capabilities. A collaboration involves two-way interaction of mutual benefit, whereas user service provides a primary benefit to the user. Investigators wishing to explore the possibility of interactions with the Resource at Washington University should contact us by mail, telephone, FAX, or e-mail (preferred). Information may also be obtained via an anonymous FTP server on the Internet on which the Resource maintains public information including a list of publications available, selected publications, and software. Access: Ftp - mac.archive.umich.edu Login: anonymous Password: your e-mail address Directory /mac/etc/medical The Mac Archives at University of Michigan is pleased to announce a new collection area for medicine and the health sciences. Currently, the collection is small - The contents is gradually growing in the AMSA public domain software library, but these files are a few years old. They are am seeking any Macintosh programs, utilities, demonstrations, or computer aided instruction related to the health sciences. If you have been developing any type of Macintosh medical software and would like to make it available to the rest of the world, send it to them. There are currently no restrictions, but for load management reasons, limits may be imposed in the future. If you are using AFS (Andrew File System) you can get to the archive directory with: cd /afs/umich.edu/group/itd/archive/mac/etc/medical Currently, the medical section of the archives is being maintained by myself, Eric Meininger (ericm@umich.edu), a medical student attending the University of Michigan Medical School. If you have any comments or suggestions, don't hesitate to send a message. SUBMITTING FILES TO THE MEDICAL SECTION OF THE ARCHIVES The best way to get files to our archive is to ftp-put them into the incoming directory, then e-mail ericm@umich.edu and let him know that you've placed a file. This way he'll know there are health science files waiting within the directory, and also who to contact if the files don't work "as advertised". Another way is to e-mail the file to ericm@umich.edu. It works just as well. Viruses Unlike other Internet "Mac" archives, we test each and every one of the files that appears in our "incoming" directory and in our mailboxes addressed to mac.archive. Questions, Problems and comments regarding the medical archive specifically should be sent to ericm@umich.edu. General mac.archive questions should be sent to comments@mac.archive.umich.edu MIRROR FTP SITE FOR PUBLIC DOMAIN MEDICAL SOFTWARE Access: ftp - sunsite.Unc.Edu Login: anonymous Password: your e-mail address Directory: See below This mirror site is maintained by the University of North Carolina. TS files are about 3000 lines long. Once they are downloaded to your personal user area, its easy to scroll to the next article by searching for the demarcator. One can also search for "(Page nn" or "(Page #nn" OR You can access The Scientist\ via NNSC Info-Server, which is an automatic program that delivers information by electronic mail. To request The Scientist\ from the Info-Server, send a message to : INFO-SERVER@nnsc.nsf.net You do not need a subject field. However, the text of your request must be in a special format as follows: REQUEST: the-scientist LINE-LIMIT:1500 or BYTE-LIMIT: 40K TOPIC: the-scientist-921207 (if you want the December 7 issue) or TOPIC:the-scientist-index (if you wish to see the list of Scientist files) REQUEST:END This request asks for two documents -- The Scientist\ of December 7, 1992 and Index to The Scientist. You can request upto 20 topics in one request. Each topic on a separate line. The NNSC Info-Server is now configured to split documents into a maximum size of 40,000 bytes (40K bytes). The reason is that some important mail gateways reject messages longer than an arbitrary limit, and others have difficulty with long messages from time to time. This is why you have to give Line or Byte Limit on the second line of your request. The requested information will be transmitted to your mail box. * TYPING INJURIES Access: ftp - soda.berkeley.edu Login - anonymous Password - your e-mail address Directory - pub/typing-injury. BITNIS Accessing databases of the national library of medicine through electronic mail - BITNIS During the I Regional Congress on Health Sciences Information held on October 1992 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Pan American Health Organization, Regional Office of the World Health Organization officially launched BITNIS (Batch BITNET/Internet to NLM Intercommunication Service), for Latin American and Caribbean Countries. BITNIS it is a new mechanism for accessing all databases of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) in Bethesda, Maryland. This method involves use of GRATEFUL MED, BITNET, internet, UUCP, FIDONET, and a software called SMED. BITNIS was developed by Dr. Andres Stutzin and Victor Cid of the University of Chile, in collaboration with the National Library of Medicine and the Pan American Health Organization. BITNIS uses GRATEFUL MED (GM) to generate the desired bibliographic search. GM is a user-friendly software program that run on an IBM- XT, AT or other compatible computer and that permits a user without experience to do a bibliographic search of the Medical Library Analysis and Retrieval System (MEDLARS) of the NLM. GM allows formulation and modification of a search strategy before sending via BITNET, internet, UUNET, etc. The search strategy is formatted by SMED and then that "file" is sending by electronic mail through any network to NLM internet node. The BITNIS gateway captures the message and converts it for processing by the NLM computer. The results of the search then are returned by the NLM computer to the gateway where the file is converted for transmission via computer network to the recipient's PC. Is the file the same as used for the GM Search Engine (Appendix G of the GM Instruction Manual)? Are the commands the same as given in the "Basics of Searching Medline" PB 89-146179 NIH GRANT LINE (DRGLINE Bulletin Board) telnet - wylbur.Cu.Nih.Gov or 128.231.64.82 At the Open prompt, type ,gen1 (must include comma) INITIALS? bb5 ACCOUNT? ccs2 This should put the user into the DRGLINE Bulletin Board (also known as NIH Grant Line at NIH). The purpose of NIH Grant Line is to make program and policy information of the Public Health Service (PHS) agencies rapidly available to the biomedical research community. Most of the research opportunity information available on this bulletin board is derived from the weekly publication, "NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts", consisting of Notices, RFAs, RFPs (announcements of availability), Numbered Program Announcements, and statements of PHS policy. The electronic version known as E-Guide is available for electronic transmission each week, sometimes a day or two in advance of the nominal Friday publication dates. The material consists predominantly of statements about the research interests of the PHS Agencies, Institutes, and National Centers that have funds to support research in the extramural community. Currently under development are 2 new files. One of them will be a monthly listing of new NIH Awards. The other one will be an order form to obtain NIH publications from DRG's Office of Grants Inquiries. The information found on the NIH Grant Line is grouped into three main sections: (1) short News Flashes that appear without any prompting shortly after you have logged on; (2) Bulletins that are for reading; and (3) Files that are intended mainly for downloading. There are menus and simple plain English commands, but all the user has to type is the first letter of the commands displayed. Since most of the current as well as archived files are located in the section of the bulletin board called FILES, type F inorder to be able to access any of the files which are arranged into directories. To get an overview of the kinds of info available type D for Directory. Remember that you can mail files (a "download" option) to your Internet address. ELECTRONIC ACCESS TO NIH GUIDE FOR GRANTS AND CONTRACTS Issued weekly for Notices, RFAs, RFPs and Program Announcements (Electronic version known as E-Guide) There are two principal methods of accessing the NIH Guide electronically. I. Via Electronic Networks to Institutional Hubs. II. By Accessing NIH Grant Line, an Electronic Bulletin Board I. INSTITUTIONAL HUBS The first method is to have someone in your research setting volunteer to receive the NIH Guide, Indices, and Directories automatically via electronic networks each time they are updated - then redistribute them locally to biomedical researchers. We call these participants the "institutional hubs", a preferred method and the most efficient in our view, and it is up to each hub to disseminate the material by existing systems or by methods of their own choosing. To express your interest in serving as the focal point for your organization and to receive a letter of invitation, send an E-mail message in which the responsible person is named to Dr. Claudia Blair whose Bitnet address is Q2C@NIHCU (or Internet Q2C@CU.NIH.GOV). II. NIH GRANT LINE The other method, which requires your active intervention to access the same documents each week, is to get access to the NIH Grant Line. Directions for this system that operates like an electronic bulletin board are given below. Incidentally, we have recently added a new feature on NIH Grant Line that, instead of downloading selected documents through a modem, allows the rapid transmission of files via Bitnet or Internet to your Bitnet or Internet address. The connection or access to our electronic bulletin board is through a modem, but you may download to a PC file, or you can speed up the process of accessing files in an interactive session by directing mail to yourself as indicated below. To access NIH Grant Line, 1. Configure your terminal emulator as: 1200 or 2400 baud, even parity, 7 data bits, 1 stop bit, Half Duplex. 2. Using the procedure specified in your communication software, dial 1-301-402-2221. When you get a response indicating that you have been connected, then type ,GEN1 (the comma is mandatory) and press ENTER; you will be prompted by the NIH system for "INITIALS?". Type BB5 and press ENTER. You will then be prompted for "ACCOUNT?". Type CCS2 and press ENTER. Messages and a menu will be displayed that will allow you to read Bulletins, or download Files. It shouldn't take you long to familiarize yourself with the contents of the bulletin board, and the commands to go back and forth from one section to another. On the NIH Grant Line, back issues of the NIH Guide are found in different directories. UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS DIVISION OF ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY BBS Access: telnet - romulus.Ehs.Uiuc.Edu 3000 or 128.174.74.24 The University of Illinois Division of Environmental Health and Safety maintains a large collection of Material Safety Data sheets. Part of the collection (approximately 26,000 MSDS's) is maintained in paper files at the Division headquarters located at 101 South Gregory St., Urbana, Illinois. The paper collection is constantly updated as new or more current MSDS's are received from manufacturers and suppliers. Each MSDS, is assigned a unique serial number uppon arrival. These numbers are referred to as DEHS ID numbers or DEHSID's. A file listing the dehsid, the chemical name and the supplier for each of these MSDS's is maintained on-line. It is accessible through this BBS at the MSDS MENU. In addition to the paper file, the Division also maintains a file containing approximately 86,000 MSDS in the form of a database which is also directly accessible through this BBS. This database consists of a collection which is distributed quarterly by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS). The CCOHS is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting a safe and healthy environment by providing information about occupational health and safety. The information contained in the CCOHS database is contributed directly to CCOHS by manufacturers and suppliers of chemical products. The MSDS's in the CCOHS database are in English and/or French, as supplied by the contributors. They contain basic information on the properties and potential hazards of chemical products, how to use them safely, and what to do if there is an emergency. The MSDS MENU allows you to simultaneously search the index of all of the paper MSDS's contained in our files as well as the MSDS's obtained on a quarterly basis from CCOHS. As you search the index, you will notice that some of the dehsid's start with the letter "T". These represent MSDS which you may directly look at in their entirety on-line. This program will eventually be used for accessing many information sources in the Division of Environmental Health and Safety. It is currently being developed, so please keep in mind that some things will not work correctly. If you encounter any difficulties in using this BBS, or if you wish to make suggestions you may contact Hector Mandel (mandel@romulus.ehs.uiuc.edu). _________________________________________________________________ GOPHER Although GOPHER is a relative newcomer to the internet, the health resources it points to are vast. The best way to learn about GOPHER and what it has to offer is to log onto one and go exploring. You'll either have to have a Gopher client or telnet to a 'public Gopher to get into the system. So a good place to begin 'tunneling' through gopher space is to telnet to the University of Minnesota gopher server at gopher.micro.umn.edu, port 70. The CAMIS gopher features much of the usual and the following: o technical report abstracts from the last 10 years from the Knowledge Systems Laboratory (which includes the Section on Medical Informatics and the Heuristic Programming Project) o an extensive collection of Mac documentation (including Word 5, Canvas and other applications) o a search test directory, originally designed for testing the NeXT's Digital Librarian indexing) that now can be used to test the searching capabilities of Don Gilbert's WAIS enhancements (in the About the CAMIS Gopher directory). It's simple, but especially useful for novices like myself to figure out what you will get with a particular search on a small, well-defined database.
