Client/Server Software

Client software typically runs on the user's computer system and is used to access information or other applications over a network. Servers typically run on centralized or remote computer systems providing, or serving, information and services to the clients.

NCSA Mosaic and the Web are built on the client/server model. NCSA Mosaic is a World Wide Web client, a browser running on your system that can communicate with the many types of servers also on the Web. These servers can include HTTP servers, FTP servers, WAIS servers, etc., which run on remote machines and serve information to the clients.
