For example; the clause regarding removal of existing roof material may need to be amplified to describe in detail the required preliminary work, or, in some cases it may not be needed at all. You may not need snow guards if snow is not a problem in your area. Leaders and gutters may or may not be a part of the contract. Ventilation may already exist. 2. Review the paragraph titled WARRANTY. If you are working under budget constraints, you may be willing to accept less. 3. Review the paragraph titled ROOF SHINGLES and fill in the blank spaces with names of the style of roofing and the preferred manufacturer you have chosen from a catalog or displays at your local building supply store. Check the remaining information in this paragraph to see if it agrees with the material selected. The references to "ASTM" are references to the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials and are a measuring stick of quality. If you are considering materials that do not meet with these standards, then ask with what industry standards they do comply. If no acceptable industry standards are being met, you may want to take a dim view of the materials being offered. If budget constraints encourage you to consider materials of lesser quality or to forgo U.L. labels, be sure that the materials selected will be in compliance with the requirements of local building codes and your home insurance carrier. It is good practice to check with local building officials in any event before purchasing. 4. Always insist on enforcing the requirements of paragraph A under the heading WORKMANSHIP. The cost of the warranty is usually included in the cost of the contract; you are paying for it and you don't want excuses later if you need to exercise the terms of the warranty. * * *
