Implicit in what has been suggested above is the fact that the Department needs significantly to increase its expectations and its requirements. Both sections of the Graduate Division now have completed the pioneering phase of their programs. The programs are well established. A satisfactory international recognition for the programs has been achieved. The time now has come to build upon the initial successes of the Department's postgraduate program. During the forthcoming triennium, postgraduate coursework within the Department must be made more complex. Students must be required to operate at more sophisticated--at genuinely international--levels of commitment and skill.
