CHESS FOUR FOUR WAY CHESS - TEAM CHESS (C) Copyright by CHESS FOUR, 1987. Every player will find his regular game vastly improved since the team play allows for an educational and greatly illuminating interchange of ideas. This game is ideal for parents teaching children to play chess. This particular four way chess is structured for maximum enjoyment and interplay. It has been perfected over decades of play. Enjoy! BOARD The Chess board is comprised of a standard board with two additional rows on each of the four sides. The pieces are set up on these two outermost rows as in a normal game except for the Kings as noted in rule 6 below. Two different light colored sets of chess pieces play against two different dark sets. RULES OF PLAY 1. This is team chess two against two. Talking is allowed during the game. 2. Teammates play adjacent (side by side) to each other not across from each other. It is recommended that the teammates castle into their common corner for mutual protection. 3. All normal rules of chess apply except as noted below. The pieces move the same and except as noted below are set up the same. 4. Light colors (e.g. white, yellow) play against dark colors (e.g. black, dark brown). 5. One set of pieces are set up on each of the two outermost rows on the outside of each border in the same relative order as in a standard two man game except for the Kings (see 6 below). 6. When setting up the pieces, if the King is on a dark square, it must be put on a white square where the queen is. The queen then is put on the King's normal square. All the Kings thus start on a white square. 7. Each player moves in a preset order with each team alternating its move. For example, White, black, yellow, dark brown, white, black, etc.. 8. When a player is mated his pieces remain on the board; the mated player's pieces cannot be moved but can be taken by the other team. An unmated teammate can of course move his pieces, but cannot move (or take) a checkmated teammate's pieces. 9. When the first player of a team (e.g. the light team) is mated, play continues (unless the light team concedes) in the same preset order established when four played. The one remaining player plays the other two with 1 light team move to two dark team moves. The mated player can talk and consult with his teammate helping him to move his pieces. 10. A player is checkmated when he cannot move his King in his move. If a player is put in checkmate, but his partner frees him from checkmate before he moves, he can continue to play. 11. The en passant rule applies only to directly opposite moving pieces not adjacent ones. ----- Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, and contributions: Chester Ceille Exec-PC Bulletin Board, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A. 414-964-5160 300/1200/2400 baud, 24 hours a day.
