Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 gives most Microsoft Windows applications the same font scaling technology as the HP LaserJet III printer family. Without leaving your application, you get type that looks as good on-screen as it does when it comes off your printer without using valuable disk space to store bitmapped screen fonts. Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 gives you: - High-quality screen fonts - no more jagged edges on displays. - On-the-fly screen fonts and type scaling - instant screen fonts in the styles and sizes you want from within your Windows 3.0 applications. - Matching screen fonts for HP LaserJet III/IIID printer's resident scalable typefaces - What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get printing. Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 includes eight scalable screen typefaces in popular CG Times and Univers, and it opens the door to installing a variety of other type products from the HP MasterType Library. You can purchase and install into Windows 3.0 any of HP's MasterType Library products which includes scalable typeface collections on cartridge or disk and more than twenty individual scalable typefaces. Please feel free to copy the Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 disks subject to the above restrictions. ******************************************************************************* OPERATING REQUIREMENTS ******************************************************************************* Printer: HP LaserJet III printer family Computer: IBM PC/AT compatible (286 and above) with high-density floppy drive Software: MS-DOS (or PC-DOS) Version 3.1 or later Microsoft Windows 3.0 running in standard or enhanced mode - real mode is not supported Memory: Minimum of 1 megabyte of extended RAM 2 megabytes recommended Free Disk Space: Minimum of 2 megabytes ******************************************************************************* INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS ******************************************************************************* NOTE: Before proceeding with the installation instructions below, you must prepare the Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 disks according to the instructions in the file README.1ST on this disk. To install Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0: 1. Make sure Windows 3.0 is installed and runs in Standard or Enhanced mode. Check which mode Windows 3.0 is running by choosing Help from the Program Manager Window and then choose About. 2. Select the HP LaserJet III or IIID printer driver through the Windows 3.0 Control Panel. 3. Exit Windows 3.0 completely and return to a DOS prompt (do not use the DOS icon). 4. Insert Disk 1 of Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 Version 1.0 in your floppy drive. 5. From the DOS prompt of your floppy disk drive, type "IFWSETUP" and press [ENTER]. Example: A:[ENTER] IFWSETUP[ENTER] 6. Follow the instructions that appear on the screens to complete installation. Hint for selecting the directory for your Typeface Files and Intellifont Summary Files: Input the directory where you have previously installed scalable typefaces. The installation program recognizes scalable typefaces. Scalable typefaces could have been installed through Type Director or AutoFont. Typefaces installed through Type Director, scalable soft fonts installed through AutoFont, and screen fonts installed through AutoFont are placed in the \td\type directory of the destination drive. If you specify a directory, (i.e. \td\type) where typefaces have already been installed, as the directory for placing your Intellifont support files, the Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 installation program will recognize the typefaces and will install them for use as scalable screen fonts. An instruction guide called IFWGUIDE.WRI in Microsoft Write format will be placed in your Windows 3.0 directory for viewing and printing. When running Windows 3.0, look for the Intellifont Icon in the Accessories Group to verify installation. If you have additional fonts to install, double click on the Intellifont icon and click on the Fonts button to open the HP Font Installer window. In the Hewlett-Packard Font Installer notice the typefaces listed in the left hand box. If the typeface has a small dot in front of it, it has been installed for scalable screen fonts. To create printer fonts to match your scalable screen fonts, see the section "FEATURES OF HEWLETT-PACKARD INTELLIFONT-FOR-WINDOWS 3.0 - New Hewlett-Packard Font Installer with AutoFont Support" for instructions. ******************************************************************************* PROBLEMS INSTALLING HEWLETT-PACKARD INTELLIFONT-FOR-WINDOWS 3.0? ******************************************************************************* ********** If you see this error message, _______________________________________________________________________________ | Missing Driver | | | | | You need to install the Windows 3.0 HP LaserJet III Printer Driver | Refer to the Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 Information Guide. | | Press [Enter] to continue. | |_______________________________________________________________________________ you need to run Windows 3.0 and setup the HP LaserJet III printer driver before installing Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0. Intellifont scales screen fonts to all point sizes supported by Windows 3.0. Screen fonts are created "on-the-fly" -- which means enhanced performance and no need to use valuable disk space for bitmapped screen fonts. Scalable Screen Font Files - CG Times and Univers screen fonts are included to match the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III and IIID printers' internal scalable typefaces. New Hewlett-Packard Font Installer - Scalable typefaces and bitmapped fonts can now be installed for use in both Windows 3.0 and your Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III or IIID printer. The Hewlett-Packard font installer installs typefaces and fonts from the following file types: .FF AGFA Compugraphic FAIS file format. These files are usually on diskette and are shipped with all Hewlett-Packard scalable font products. The .FF file provides support for scalable printer fonts and scalable screen fonts. .TYP AGFA Compugraphic library file format. These files are placed in the \TD\TYPE directory when you install a typeface through Type Director, when you install a scalable soft font through HP's AutoFont, and when you install a scalable cartridge with screen fonts through HP's AutoFont. The .TYP file provides support for scalable printer fonts and scalable screen fonts. .PCM Printer Cartridge Metrics file. This file is created by the cartridge vendor. PCM files are used for scalable and bitmapped cartridges that are not supported by the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III printer driver. The PCM file only provides support for printer fonts. For scalable cartridges the scalable screen fonts must be installed from a .FF file or a .TYP file. GLUE.TXT This file contains information for all products you install with AutoFont Support. Soft fonts and cartridges, bitmapped or scalable can be installed from the "glue.txt" file. When prompted by the HP Font Installer for the drive\directory from where you want to add fonts, input the drive\directory where your "glue.txt" file is located (default directory for HP's AutoFont program and for Type Director is C:\AUTOFONT). The HP Font Installer reads the "glue.txt" file and displays a list of the typefaces that have been installed with AutoFont support. When you add typeface(s), the HP Font Installer creates a .PFM file for soft fonts and a .PCM file for cartridge fonts from the AutoFont .TFM files. The HP Font Installer installs the .PFM and .PCM files into Windows 3.0 for access by the printer driver. The GLUE.TXT file only provides support for printer fonts. For scalable soft fonts and cartridges the scalable screen fonts must be installed from a .FF file or a .TYP file. .sfp Bitmapped soft font in portrait orientation. Intellifont screen fonts are only available for bitmapped fonts that were created from an AGFA Compugraphic library file (.TYP). Windows 3.0 will attempt to display a rough representation of other bitmapped fonts. .sfl Bitmapped soft font in landscape orientation. Intellifont screen fonts are only available for bitmapped fonts that were created from an AGFA Compugraphic library file (.TYP). Windows 3.0 will attempt to display a rough representation of other bitmapped fonts. AutoFont Support - AutoFont support incorporated into the Hewlett-Packard font installer allows the installation of scalable typeface cartridges, scalable soft fonts, bitmapped font AutoFont and bitmapped soft fonts into Windows 3.0 without first acquiring a Windows 3.0 metric file. AutoFont support works by creating the Windows 3.0 metrics files from the .TFM files installed through AutoFont. ******************************************************************************** HPPCL5A PRINTER DRIVER ENHANCEMENTS ******************************************************************************** Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 version 1.0 includes version 3.7 of the HPPCL5A printer driver for the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet III and IIID printers. Enhancements include: * Print Model Improvement * New and Improved Gray Scale Printing * Font Downloading Optimizations Print Model Improvement - The print model feature has been improved to include printing patterned or shaded text and graphic images on all images instead of only on black rectangles. If your application takes advantage of the print model feature, you can print patterned or shaded text or graphic images on any other patterned or shaded text or graphic image. New and Improved Gray Scale Printing - The gray scale option has been expanded to include optimal printing of scanned images. There are three choices in the Gray Scale dialog box in the Printer Setup screen for printing gray scale graphics: Photographic Images, Line Art Images, and HP ScanJet Images. Photographic Images replaces the Gray Scale Graphics On selection supported in Version 3.61 of the HPPCL5A driver. This method uses an 8 bit by 8 bit super pixel to emulate 60 levels of gray. This is up from 32 levels of gray supported in the previous version of the driver. For improved photographic appearance, select Photographic Images. Your images will have smooth, soft looking contrasts between shades of gray. Images originally designed with color will print better also. Line Art Images replaces the Gray Scale Graphics Off selection supported in Version 3.61 of the HPPCL5A driver. This method uses patterns to emulate 32 levels of gray. It has been improved from the previous version of the driver by supporting 32 new hand-tuned patterned images. The benefits of this method is that is has fewer artifacts and a better balance of gray tones than the old method, yet all of the detail is preserved. Use this method for images that have a "line draw" look such as clip art. HP ScanJet Images is a new option for printing gray scale graphics. This method uses a variation of the 8 bit by 8 bit super pixel used in the Photographic Images method. The HP ScanJet Images option is specially tuned for scanned images from an HP ScanJet to give exceptional quality and clarity to the printed images. You may want to print your graphic images from more than one of the Gray Scale printing methods. Only you can decide which method creates the best output for your picture. Font Downloading Optimizations - The HPPCL5A printer driver now downloads individual characters of a symbol set to the printer as they are referenced, rather than sending the entire symbol set at one time. ******************************************************************************** USER HINTS ******************************************************************************** When you install Hewlett-Packard Intellifont-for-Windows 3.0 an Information Guide in Microsoft Write format called "ifwguide.wri" is installed in your Windows 3.0 directory.
