The procedure described below has allowed me to install IBM OS/2 V2.0 (Beta Release 6.123) on a system that has a 5 1/4" 1.2 MB A: floppy diskette drive and a 3 1/2" 1.44 MB B: floppy diskette drive. If your system requires a device driver for the 1.44 MB support, it most probably will not work. I cannot guarantee that it will work in systems beyond that in which I have used it. But, you are welcome to try. First and foremost, your system must be capable of running the V2.0 code (in whatever state of development that it is in). That means that OS/2 must recognize your hard disks, memory, video board, diskette drives, etc. without additional support beyond what is distributed by IBM. I suggest that you read this entire README file before beginning this procedure. There may be simpler ways of doing this; however, this method worked for me. You will note that the procedure involves some extra work to insure that no extended attributes or other OS/2 specific data is lost. This method should also continue working if the OS/2 boot files are later either hidden or position sensitive. The only future caveat is that the entire contents of any future OS/2 3 1/2" 1.44 MB diskette must be able to be copied onto a 5 1/4" 1.2 MB diskette. IBM seems to be making a conscientious effort to see that this is the case (at least with the copies that I have seen to date.) This procedure uses a shareware program, BOOT-B, that is included in this .ZIP file. If you utilize this procedure and therefore BOOT-B, please register the program with the author. (The $10.00 registration fee is certainly worth being able to run V2.0, isn't it?) Well, on to the procedure: While in DOS, complete the following: 1. Format enough 1.2 MB diskettes in your A: drive to equal the number of 3 1/2" distribution diskettes plus two (2). (No /S parameter.) 2. Label them as TEMP-1, TEMP-2, and then duplicate the labels on the OS/2 distribution diskettes for the remaining ones. 3. Place the new 5 1/4" OS/2 Install Diskette in A:. 4. Run BOOT-B for that diskette. (No parameters were necessary for me. Consult the BOOT-B documentation, if required.) 7. Place 5 1/4" TEMP-2 in A:. 8. Place 3 1/2" OS/2 Diskette 1 in B:. 9. COPY B:\*.* A:\ /V. 5. Place 5 1/4" TEMP-1 in A:. 6. Run BOOT-B for that diskette. 10. Place 3 1/2" OS/2 Install Diskette in B: 11. COPY B:\*.* A:\ /V. 12. Reboot your machine with the above two diskettes in place. (A power-off boot is recommended.) If all has gone well, OS/2 V2.0 will boot (utilizing both A: and B: drives) and request that you place OS/2 Diskette 1 in Drive A:. At this point, place TEMP-2 in A:. After OS/2 has completed loading, press ESC when presented the option of continuing installation or aborting installation. Under OS/2 V2.0 (not installed on your hard disk and at the A: prompt) complete the following: 1. Place the new 5 1/4" OS/2 Install Diskette in A:. 2. Insure that the 3 1/2" OS/2 Install Diskette is in B:. 3. COPY B:\*.* A:\ /V. 4. Place the new 5 1/4" OS/2 Diskette 1 in A:. 5. Place the 3 1/2" OS/2 Diskette 1 in B: 6. COPY B:\*.* A:\ /V. 7. Repeat the procedure " COPY B:\*.* A:\ /V " for all of the remaining 3 1/2" diskettes. (Note - The above use of temporary diskettes and temporary boot is designed to enable the use of OS/2 to copy your operational/installation diskettes so that all extended attributes are retained. If you already have an operational version of OS/2 (V1.2 or later) installed, you can avoid the creation of the temporary diskettes above and boot your existing version of OS/2 to copy all of the 3 1/2" diskettes to 5 1/4" diskettes as soon as you have run BOOT-B on your new 5 1/4" installation diskette.) You now have a complete set of 5 1/4" diskettes. You can discard the temporary diskettes. In order to boot for your actual installation, place your new 5 1/4" OS/2 Install Diskette in A: and your original 3 1/2" OS/2 Installation Diskette in B:. Perform a power-off reboot. When you are asked to change diskettes, just use the new 5 1/4" set. Good luck, and I hope that the procedure works for you as it did for me. H.
