An updated release of Windows, version 3.00a, is now being distributed by Microsoft to end-users. This is a maintenance update that contains minimal code changes. This version includes improvements to the setup program, plus a booklet answering the most commonly asked questions about Windows. CHANGES BETWEEN VERSIONS 3.0 AND 3.00A Windows 3.00a DPMI Translation Services Reentrant *In very rare circumstances, programs running in Windows 3.0 Standard Mode may experience Unrecoverable Application Errors (UAEs), hangs, and other assorted crashing behaviors caused by protected-mode code that calls into real-mode TSRs or drivers. This covers a variety of software, including 3270 emulators and fax board and scanner drivers. Users experiencing standard mode problems in configurations similar to those described here should update to version 3.00a. Version 3.00a fixes these problems with a change to the DOS extender (DOSX.EXE) which makes the DPMI (interrupt 31h) translation services reentrant. NetBIOS Changes: Data Loss in Networking Applications *Users experiencing data loss and/or packet corruption problems in Windows network connectivity applications, such as 3270 emulators and other network specific applications, should update to version 3.00a. Corrupted packet problems on direct NetBIOS calls are addressed in version 3.00a through minor fixes to DOSX.EXE and WIN386.EXE. Unrecoverable Application Errors During Enhanced Mode DDE *Users experiencing UAEs while using DDE in 386 enhanced mode, e.g. between Microsoft Word for Windows and Microsoft Excel, should contact Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) for advice about updating to version 3.00a. This update may remove the UAE, depending on system configuration, DDE link characteristics, memory availability, etc. Be prepared to provide PSS with system specifics including hardware specs and AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS. Unrecoverable Application Errors Under Low Memory Conditions *Operating Windows 3.0 under very low memory conditions can cause a UAE when program code is being swapped into and out of RAM from the hard disk. Users experiencing UAEs when their systems are low on memory (many applications running, data files open, etc.) should contact Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) for advice about updating to version 3.00a. Be prepared to provide PSS with system specifics including hardware specs and AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS. Unrecoverable Application Errors While Printing *Printing operations require a lot of memory to load drivers, prepare output data, etc. This can cause Windows 3.0 to run low on memory and result in a UAE. Users experiencing UAEs when printing should contact Microsoft Product Support Services (PSS) for advice about updating to version 3.00a. Be prepared to provide PSS with system specifics including hardware specs and AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS.
