forth BIZynet's organization and policies. Because many subscribers to BIZynet will also be involved with FidoNet and other networks, FidoNet's policy document (POLICY4.TXT) was used as a guideline to prepare this document and some paragraphs are quoted or paraphrased. As a BIZynet subscriber, you are expected to be familiar with all of the information contained in this document and are held responsible for its contents. 1.1 Policy Updates This document will continue to be expanded as additional information is needed and policy changes dictate. It will be available as a screen formatted ASCII file BIZYPLCY.TXT, WordPerfect 5.1 format as BIZYPLCY.DOC, and as a printed manual. Announcements will be made on the Administration and Coordination echo (BIZYNET) when a new version is available for file request. All Hubs should make the updated file available to their Nodes and callers. 1.2 Advantages of BIZynet BIZynet is an commercial electronic mail system designed for business networking. The interconnected nodes of BIZynet are a common carrier or a value-added service network and is a public network only in as much as the independent nodes may provide public access to the network on their system. If you've seen what kind of business connections can be found on other networks, BIZynet offers even more; you can advertise and conduct business instead of just discussing it. Echo style networking allows dissemination of information to subscribing Bulletin Board Systems (BBS's), single purpose Nodes, and their individual callers scattered as far as a telephone will reach. The centralized host structure ensures same day delivery and rerouting even if a Host system or a Hub goes down. BIZynet is primarily comprised of entrepreneurs working together to provide advise and support for their individual efforts. Locating low cost products and customers that need those products are only a part of the information flow. For companies with branches scattered across the country, the network provides access to information, potential customers, suppliers, and built in inter-office memos that don't get misplaced. It's like having a whole staff of consultants at your finger tips. Using file attach and file request options allows transfer of even larger blocks of information. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 1 ] 1.2.1 Customer Support BIZynet is also a way companies can provide customer/product support at reasonable costs. The company can be easily contacted for more information about their products or for technical support. Dedicated echo subscribers may place information about BIZynet in their advertising to provide additional indications of their willingness to support their product. Each advertising campaign means that many more callers for everyone on the network. 1.2.2 Attractive Appearing Messages To further improve its business appearance, BIZynet will support the upper 128 IBM ASCII characters. Having the foreign letters, line drawing, and the other decorative characters allows more attractive announcements and messages in most languages. 1.2.3 Sales points o Reliable operation is provided by a full time Zone Coordinator and complete equipment redundancy. o Rapid message delivery with a Central Host and only one layer of Hubs for same day traffic delivery. o Professional business atmosphere with folks interested in really conducting business and facilities for advertising and quoting prices. o Dedicated public/private echo channels for specific applications such as product support and inter-office mail. o Rapid message retrieval in compressed packets for a large variety of off-line readers not provided by non-Fido networks. o Direct access by automated stand alone systems so busy folks don't have to "log on" to get their messages. o Cross country letters and files delivered overnight for less than the cost of a postage stamp. o Assets to assist SYSOP's in covering their expenses and in many cases actually make a profit with their BBS. o Helpful organization of SYSOP's exchanging ideas and materials for getting the most out of their BBS. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 2 ] 1.3 Putting BIZynet to Work Because of its varied assets, there are any number of ways the BIZynet echoes can be put to work. In addition to all of the business and advertising assets, here are some tips on how SYSOP's can cover the expense of operating their BBS and actually show a profit. 1.3.1 Collecting Nodes As a BIZynet Hub, by serving a number of Nodes you can collect regular monthly fees. As an example; each Node pays $10 a month to BIZynet and $10 per month to their Hub. If a Hub has five Nodes, that brings in $50 to cover the $20 Hub fee to BIZynet and $30 to cover the monthly phone bill. The $10 Hub fee is only a suggestion and it is left up to the Hub to determine what they feel is reasonable to charge their nodes. 1.3.2 Finding BBS Sponsors The BIZynet commercial echoes provide assets to market for gaining business subscribers and sponsors. For example; a node could line up local businesses to pay $5.00 a month to sponsor an echo in exchange for having a "Sponsored by..." messages on the echo menu. With a little effort, it could mean $100 a month coming in regularly. 1.3.3 Gaining Registered Callers It is left to the discretion of the SYSOP's as to how the handle access to the BIZynet echoes. However, if for example, the General Business echo (GEN_BIZ), Business Card echo (BIZ_CARDS), and the Business Opportunity echo (BIZ_OPPS) are made available for all callers they will encourage callers to register to gain access to the others. Log on news bulletins and a few well placed messages will help even more. 1.3.4 On-Line Advertising Many opportunities come up for BBS's to provide advertising space in a variety of forms. Log on and Goodby panels are only one location. Attractive panels displayed in route to an active "For Sale" area can be very effective. Part of the success is by attracting as many business related callers as possible. Having the BIZynet echoes is a definite asset. 1.3.5 Extra Materials The sign up package for BIZynet includes a set of attractive ANSI/ASCII menus for all of the BIZynet echoes ready to use. Some, like the NetMail menu which has a pop up mailbox flag, are animated and have TheDraw files. Descriptive help bulletins for BIZynet and each of the echoes are also provided. Each of the menus and bulletins can be customized to suit the SYSOP's purposes. There is also a file with sample log on news bulletins and fancy frames for making announcements. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 3 ] 2.0 Organization BIZynet system users may be grouped on several possible levels. However, all echo traffic must be sent by the shortest route to the Central Host, BIZynet BBS. No more than one intermediate mail handler (Hub) may exist between any subscriber and the Central Host. All network administration and access authorization will be handled solely by ShareGames or its agents. The following diagram and paragraphs provide a summary of the structure. A Stand-Alone Node would normally be used by one person or a single company and does not require installation of BBS. Within the context of this document, the operator of a Stand-Alone Node or system and a System Operator (SYSOP) are treated the same and carry the same network responsibilities. The acronym "SYSOP" applies to both. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 4 ] 2.2 BBS Nodes The smallest subdivision of BIZynet is the individual system, which also corresponds to a single entry in BIZynet's Node List. The System Operator (SYSOP) is expected to formulate a policy for running their bulletin board system (BBS) and dealing with their users and/or callers. The SYSOP must mesh with the rest of the BIZynet system to send and receive mail, and their local policy must be consistent with the other levels of BIZynet. A Node's message traffic may be routed directly to the Central Host or via a local Hub also subscribing to BIZynet. 2.2.1 Users or Callers The SYSOP or operator of a Stand-Alone Node is responsible for the actions of any caller or user accessing BIZynet via their system. All traffic entering BIZynet via a given Node is the responsibility of the SYSOP. 2.2.2 Points A point, as defined by FidoNet, is not authorized in BIZynet. If a SYSOP wishes to provide traffic forwarding via their system to other systems, they must request authorization to operate as a Hub. To qualify as a Hub, all BIZynet traffic must be exchanged via the Central Host. All Stand-Alone or BBS systems forwarding traffic via a Hub must contract with ShareGames to acquire a BIZynet Node number before access is authorized. 2.3 Routing Hubs BIZynet routing hubs exist only in some locations. Hubs are not authorized to forward traffic via another BIZynet Hub. All Hub level traffic must be exchanged via the Central Host as illustrated in Figure 2-1. 2.4 Host Facilities All EchoMail and Hub Routed NetMail message traffic will be routed through the Central Host for distribution. Currently there is only one Host location; BIZynet BBS, in San Diego, California, for direct dial telephone access. When network message loading and expansion dictates, additional Host BBS's may be established with direct continuous mail handling capabilities. 2.5 Echo Topics The echo topics currently available via BIZynet are listed below. All SYSOP's are required to carry and monitor the echo tags proceeded by an asterisk (*). The responsibility for monitoring will be shared with the moderators of the echoes. Each of the echoes is described in the following paragraphs. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 6 ] 2.5.1 BIZynet Administrative Traffic The BIZynet Administrative Traffic (BIZYNET) echo is for coordination of the network and exchanging information between SYSOP's and moderators. This echo should not be available to system callers. 2.5.2 BIZynet Contact and Chat Conference The Contact and Chat Conference (BIZY_LINK) is required on all BIZynet member's systems. Every BBS may carry a different selection of echoes and this echo ensures everyone can get in touch with anyone on the BIZynet network. It's also available for conversation on almost any topic. This echo is often the best choice for answering messages on the Business Cards (BIZ_CARDS) echo. Chris Gunn, your BIZynet Coordinator, handles moderating the BIZYNET, BIZY_LINK and BIZ_CARDS echoes. 2.5.3 Business Cards and Announcements This area is so folks can post their business card information (BIZ_CARDS) or announcements. When you enter your business calling card, it will be just like posting a message. Please use something like the format you see for most of the messages to make it easier for folks to scan through the 'cards' to find you. If you wish to leave a message to one of the folks with a calling card, you should make a note of who the card is 'From' and post it in a local or the appropriate BIZynet Echo message bases. Often it may be advantageous to post your questions or answers via NetMail. Because any messages posted here can be read on all of the subscribing Nodes, and as such it becomes public domain, your address and information may be included in lists compiled for advertising purposes. 2.5.4 Business Opportunities Conference The Business Opportunities Conference (BIZ_OPPS) is for exploring business potentials, making business connections, or setting up arrangements. In other words, it's for conducting business as are most of the BIZynet echoes. This is also one of three BIZynet echoes which may be carried free of charge by other systems without needing a BIZynet Node Number. The BIZynet Hubs and Nodes are encouraged to offer the echo to local BBS's to acquaint them with what can be accomplished via network. Chris Bradford, who is a business entrepreneur, is your Moderator for the BIZ_OPPS echo. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 7 ] 2.5.5 For those moments of Inspiration For those moments of brilliant inspiration, the BRAINSTORM echo provides a spot to share and discuss the potentials. Perhaps you know what I'm talking about. You've had some problem with some device or appliance or other piece of mechanical equipment, or you're trying to solve some other problem and nothing that you have or can buy will do the job, and you're standing in the shower and this burst of inspiration hits... "If only they made a...." and you realize you have the germ of an idea that could make a million bucks for some big company. In other words, it's "ideas on the honor system". The fact remains that under no circumstances will you get less than if you just forget the whole thing! Jack Decker, with all of his inventive ideas, is your Moderator for the BRAINSTORM and CAUCUS echoes. 2.5.6 Political Discussion Conference The Political Discussion Conference (CAUCUS) is a platform for discussing the hard working side of politics and how it relates to business. Getting into the realistic effects on our economy of those running for office is the idea. The CAUCUS echo is also available free to other systems without needing a BIZynet Node Number as long as the system operator agrees to comply with all other portions of this document. 2.5.7 Economic Issues Conference The Economic Issues Conference (ECONOMY) is where you can hash out business problems with taxes, import quotas, license fees, or discuss where the economy is headed and why. If you've got some tips on business economic indicators, this is a great place to let everyone know and to talk about it. Doreen Martel, of OnLine Broker, is your Moderator for the ECONOMY echo. 2.5.8 Employment/Job Issues Conference Taking the steps to hire your first employee when your home office out grows what you can handle is what the Employment/Job Issues Conference (EMPLOYMENT) is intended to help with. This is also where you can discuss how to conduct a hiring interview from both sides of the desk. Labor relations and how to boost morale and production also fit into the mixture. Bill Sawvel, of Search BBS, is moderator for the EMPLOYMENT echo. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 8 ] 2.5.9 Consultant and Entrepreneur Conference The purpose of the BIZynet Consultant and Entrepreneur Conference (FREELANCE) echo is a spot to discuss all the aspects of consulting, running a home office, or entrepreneuring a new concept or product. This is a very active echo with Jack Decker moderating. You'll find good information and lots of solid advise on how to handle almost any small business application. Jack Decker is your Moderator for the FREELANCE echo. 2.5.10 General Business & News Conference The purpose of the BIZynet General Business and News Conference (GEN_BIZ) is to exchange business related information. Just about anything not covered in the other BIZynet echoes is appropriate. Business news items, Price quotes, referrals, contract negotiations, and questions on potential investments are just some of the topics you can take advantage of here. If callers wish to talk Multi-Level Marketing (MLM), they should contact their parent company and ask them to make arrangements with ShareGames to provide a dedicated echo or use the BIZynet MULTI-LEVEL echo. Pyramids, chain letters, perpetual motion machines, and other questionable methods of trying to make easy money are not welcome. The folks here work hard to earn their living. Roy J. Tellason, who is well known and respected on FidoNet, is your Moderator for the GEN_BIZ echo. 2.5.11 Stock Market and Investor's Forum If you're interested in putting your money to work for you, the Stock Market and Investor's Forum (INVESTORS) is a good starting point. Here beginners and professionals can trade leads, market their services, and discuss what the stock market is doing. Before too long, you should also find one or more investor's clubs where you can pool your resources and knowledge to develop your own mini-mutual fund. Roger Aylward, who is a wizard in the investment world, is your Moderator for the INVESTORS echo. 2.5.12 Multi-Level-Marketing Conference The Multi-Level-Marketing Conference (MULTI-LEVEL) is for discussing all aspects of MLM. We're still looking for a good moderator for the TECH_INFO echo. 2.5.16 TeleCommuting To Work Forum The TeleCommuting To Work Forum (TELE_COMMUTE) is a fairly new addition to BIZynet. What's telecommuting? Here is where you can find out more about what's going on. Anyone who works at home, or at an office close to home, is a telecommuter. It's bringing the work to the worker, instead of the other way around. It's avoiding the daily commute to the office, and the traffic, pollution, and hassle that go along with rush hour driving. Who's telecommuting? Employees, managers, salespeople, contractors, home business owners, and entrepreneurs. Some companies have formal telecommuting programs, more have informal arrangements, and many would like to know what telecommuting can do for them. John Riedy, of the San Diego Telecommute Society, is your Moderator for the TELE_COMMUTE echo. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 10 ] 2.5.17 Guess what funny thing happened? The purpose of the Whoops! echo is to share those funny stories about what happened on the way or at the office. Please remember to keep it suitable for mixed company. Amusing stories to impress your boss or client come in handy for everyone and help lighten the day. If there's a lesson to be learned mixed in, then all the better. 2.5.18 Travel Arrangements and Chat Conference The Travel Arrangements and Chat Conference (BIZYTRAVEL) is partly for the fun of talking about that last vacation or business trip. It's also for travel agencies and services to offer their specials and make arrangements with their clients. If you'd like to know a bit about where you're traveling to, this is the spot to ask. This is another spot we're looking for a good moderator that knows the travel arrangement business. 2.5.19 Collector's Exchange Conference If you deal in Antiques, Baseball Cards, Comic Books, or other collectibles, the Collector's Exchange Conference (COLLECTORS) will be an asset. Discussions on the latest software for contact management and the best approaches to keep in personal touch with your customers are some of what you'll find here. We're currently looking for an active moderator for the CONTACTS echo. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 11 ] 2.5.21 Especially Yours On-Line Mall The Especially Yours On-Line Mall (ESPYOURS) is a specialty echo that includes thousands of catalog items. You'll find everything from jewelry, collectibles, flowers, toys, and decorator items to talking balloons and furniture. In addition to reviewing the catalog descriptions on-line, there is a complete catalog archive that may be downloaded and copies of the attractive full color glossy page catalogs may be purchased for a nominal fee. Business related services with colorful animated advertising are currently under development as additions. Because of it's nature, the Especially Yours echo generally requires a complete installation of the menus and bulletins associated with the service. The ANSI/ASCII menus and a set of catalog bulletins are furnished by BIZynet. As they are available, ready to install updates are provided. Gail Summersett, owner and operator of Especially Yours On-Line Mall, agrees to fully guarantee all purchases made by users, as stated in the warranty bulletins, and further agrees to give prompt and courteous service to users orders, and questions. SYSOP's will not be held liable, or responsible for the orders and Gail Summersett accepts full responsibility for all financial and business dealings occurring as the result of orders or inquiries. All SYSOP's carrying the Especially Yours On-Line Mall must agree to comply with the following policies and procedures: 1. The contents of the catalog and bulletins and the appearance of the menus may not be altered in any way. Gail Summersett and the BIZynet Coordinator retain the right to revoke access to the Especially Yours echo and demand all files and materials furnished be deleted or destroyed. 2. The messages posted in the Especially Yours echo must be retained for at least a two month time span. If the number of messages permits, a longer period is to everyones advantage. 3. Specific written permission from Gail Summersett is required for any distribution, for profit or otherwise, of the Especially Yours materials beyond the scope of access to the system's callers. 4. All materials furnished for the installation and operation of the Especially Yours On-Line Mall remain the property of BIZynet and Gail Summersett 2.5.22 Home Business Conference If you enjoy working from your home or your own computer, the Home Business Conference (HOME_BIZ) conference should prove an informative spot to share your experiences and seek advise. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 12 ] 2.5.23 International Trader's Conference The International Trader's Conference (INTL_TRADE) will be distributed to as many parts of the World as possible. It's designed to allow importers and exporters to exchange leads, list or request materials and supplies, and coordinate contract arrangements. Tips on things to watch for are also welcome. Provide all the details you can and quote the prices. The more information you provide, the fewer messages are needed to close the arrangements. As connections can be developed, the INTL_TRADE echo will be gated to France, Italy, England and other European countries as well as Russia, Japan, Korea, and South America. Eventually we hope to achieve World wide coverage to all of the countries. Your widely traveled moderator of the INTL_TRADE echo, Raymond Micallef, keeps things coordinated and is always willing to lend a hand. 2.5.24 Direct Mailer's Conference The Direct Mailer's Conference (MAIL_LIST) is for exchanging information in regards to how to take advantage of direct mail advertising. Direct Mailing companies may also offer their mailing lists for exchange or sale. Questions and tips on how to get the most from direct mail campaigns are welcome. 2.5.25 Real Estate Listings and Requests The Real Estate Listings and Requests (PROPERTY) echo is for realtors to post their prime listings and offer their services. It's where folks can shop for property scattered across the country or post for sale by owner. If you have facsimile or GIF files be sure to make it known. Complete listings, pictures, and preliminary contracts may be passed via BIZynet as NetMail file attaches. Making mortgage arrangements, asking questions, and offering advice is part of the package, using the separate Real Estate Conference (REAL_INFO) echo. It's to your advantage to post your best listings and let folks know how to get your entire list. NetMail file attaches to only those interested will keep your prime listings in the message buffers that much longer. 2.5.26 Real Estate Information Exchange The Real Estate Information Exchange (REAL_INFO) is intended for realtors, investors, and mortgage specialists to exchange information and also offer their services. If you are looking for something in particular or you want to know something about where you are thinking about moving, this is the best place to ask. It's also a chance to get to know the realtors in that area without a long drive or getting on a plane. The separate Real Estate Listings (PROPERTY) echo may be used for listings and to shop for property scattered across the country. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 13 ] 2.5.27 Single Search Matchmaking Forum The Single Search Forum (SINGLE_SEARCH) is a dynamic computer match-making service that offers an accurate and respectable way for singles to safely meet highly compatible partners. Based on university research and surveys of what singles value most in relationships, it provides a mind-body-spirit index for applicants to complete about themselves and the person they seek. Designed to eliminate the stress, frustration and fear that singles encounter in the quest for a mate, Single Search combines the elements of romance with modern technology. Discussions in the conference cover a wide range of issues and concerns singles are confronted with in today's world. The system matches you with those who share or compliment beliefs, interests, habits, education, income, profession, and goals. Monthly match letters offer members a list of compatible others reported by zip code and percentages of compatibility. Members can order profiles containing all details including method of contact or wait to be ordered and contacted. The system was designed by a marriage counselor and a computer programmer who met by using the early stages of the system. It's safe, confidential, accurate, affordable, fun and convenient. BIZynet users can complete applications on-line and will receive match letters by mail. Registration fees for the service are $40.00 for six months and $5.00 - $4.00 per profile order. Your moderator for the Single Search discussions is Lisa Bentsen, MSW. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 14 ] 3.0 Subscribing to BIZynet The first step in becoming a BIZynet Node or Hub is to establish your most cost effective Host or Hub. The costs are illustrated in Figure 3-1. If you have a Hub in your local calling area, it's obviously your best option. If your expected traffic loading is light or you are on the West Coast, direct dial access to the Central Host is less expensive than using an 800 Number. Your local phone company should be able to advise you on what your long distance charges would be. Five minutes a day can handle a lot of messages at 2400 bps and you can connect with the 70:1/0 Host using V32 or V32bis and with the 70:2/0 Host at 9600 bps if you have a CompuCom Modem. ÉÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÑÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÑÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ» º CENTRAL HOST ³ LOCAL HUB ³ º º ACCESS ³ ACCESS ³ FEE DESCRIPTION º ÇÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄĶ º $25.00 ³ $10.00 ³ Node Number and Setup º ÇÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÅÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄĶ º $20.00 ³ $10.00 ³ Monthly Node Charge º ÌÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍØÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍØÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ͹ º $65.00 ³ $30.00 ³ Initial Node Costs º ÈÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÏÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÏÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍͼ Figure 3-1 BIZynet Connect Charges NOTE Nodes routing traffic via a local Hub would be expected to pay additional fees to the SYSOP of the Hub. The initial cost of becoming a BIZynet Node includes the first and last months connect fee. Prices shown include all taxes. You may also contract to have your own dedicated echo topic, public or private, for a $50.00 set up fee and $45.00 a month. Please also refer to the Order Form at the end of this document. All BIZynet charges are based strictly on Node Number assignment. However, if an individual Node's average message count entered into BIZynet for routing reaches twice the average message loading of the other Nodes in the system they may be required to carry an additional Node Number. There are no restrictions placed on what a SYSOP charges their callers for access to the BIZynet echoes. Although $10.00 a month is suggested, Hubs are free to set the appropriate charges for Nodes routing traffic through their system. BIZynet Hub and Node fees should be sent to the network treasurer. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 15 ] 3.1 BIZynet Treasurer In general the fees for system access to BIZynet are $20.00 per month which is shared by the BIZynet Hosts and Hubs to help cover equipment and telephone costs for routing the message traffic. This applies to BBS and stand-alone systems and not to individual BBS callers. The profitable portion of the network comes from BBS advertisers and all of the business connections. The BIZynet Treasurer, Mike Eddingfield (70:1/9), uses the Node List to track fees and provides monthly NetMail statements and receipts. Arrangements can be made for up to two Nodes per Hub to send their payment for both BIZynet and their Hub fees to the treasurer. 3.2 Obtaining a Node Number After determining your best option, send a check or money order to ShareGames along with your full name, the name you use as SYSOP or to log onto BIZynet BBS, address, and phone numbers. You must also indicate you have read, and agree to abide by, this document and all the current policies of BIZynet. There is a form at the end of this document you may print and use to apply. Christopher G. Gunn BIZynet BBS: (619) 283-1721 S h a r e G a m e s CompuServe: 73770,1329 3174 Hawthorn Street FidoNet: 1:202/1008 San Diego, CA 92104 24-hour voice: (619) 283-0472 Requests will be handled as quickly as possible. But as the network grows, please allow a week or so for a Node Number request to be activated. 3.2.1 Becoming a Hub If there are several nodes in your local calling area, or there is a group of Nodes that share a common interest, you may request permission to become a Hub. This has advantages to both you and your Nodes. You can gain faster traffic delivery between Nodes and collectively reduce long distance phone costs. You may optionally share the costs or charge your Nodes a reasonable fee to cover your time and operating costs. For example; your Hub can use the Central Host and each of your nodes would be making local calls and only required to pay the Hub connect fees to BIZynet. The first step is to contact the other SYSOP's, consultants, and businesses in your area. You must decide which Nodes will be appropriate, establish the procedures for handling any costs acquired locally, and any fees beyond those charged for use of the Node numbers. Then contact the BIZynet Coordinator. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 16 ] 3.2.2 Becoming a Moderator Wherever possible, each BIZynet echo will have a moderator to guide the discussions, provide their expertise to answer questions, and monitor the decorum and content of the messages. It's really not difficult, in comparison to the volunteer networks, because the majority of the folks participating are interested in doing business. If you are interested in moderating an existing echo or starting a new one, please contact the BIZynet Coordinator to work out the arrangements. 3.2.3 Establishing a Dedicated Echo Having your own BIZynet echo can be a very effective business tool. There are several like; Especially Yours and Mail_List, that put their echoes to work locating and exchanging information with their clients. There is a nominal setup fee and a monthly $45.00 charge to cover having an echo you can operate as you wish. As part of the package, a description of your service will be added to this document file for distribution to existing and potential members of BIZynet. You may also use the services of the Host to deliver files directly to members rather than task them with the cost of downloads. 3.2.4 Recommended Mailers The Fido mail handler called BinkleyTerm is highly recommended for BIZynet access and is used by the Central Host. FrontDoor also provides an effective interface but is not quite as serviceable for multi-zone handling. For Stand-Alone Node installations, D'Bridge will handle all of your needs including reading and answering messages. Ready to run, preconfigured versions of BinkleyTerm and D'Bridge with trial key are also available on disk for $35.00. Please note: Before the 30 day trial period expires you are expected to pay (usually $99.00) for a registered D'Bridge key. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 17 ] 4.0 Traffic Handling The Central Host will operate in the Continuous Mail mode and traffic will be held until picked up by the Nodes. Hubs may optionally hold or automatically deliver traffic to their Nodes. If you are sending or expecting Immediate priority messages, you may poll your Host or Hub any time of day. Normal and Crash priority traffic should be handled during your assigned polling times. 4.1 Polling Schedule To balance the calling load and reduce busy signals each Node or Hub that exchanges traffic with one of the Hosts will be assigned two polling times. The first will be during the evening hours and the second approximately six hours later. Your scheduled polling times will be coordinated to avoid Zone Mail Hour and prime time calling rates. 4.2 EchoMail Routing All EchoMail message traffic will be routed through the Central Host for distribution to other Hubs and Nodes. Nodes attached to a Hub will route traffic to the Hub for forwarding. BIZynet traffic may not be gated into or routed via any other system unless specifically authorized by ShareGames. 4.3 NetMail Routing All Hub Routed NetMail message traffic will be routed through the Central Host for distribution to other Hubs and Nodes. Nodes attached to a Hub will route NetMail to the Hub for forwarding. NetMail carrying a BIZynet Node Number may not be gated into or routed via any other system. There are no restrictions placed on direct delivery of NetMail to its destination. 4.4 Requesting Echoes All area fixes for Hubs and Nodes routing directly to the Central Host must be processed at the Central Host. Attempting remote area fixes may return a message indicating there has been a password violation. Normally a formatted message addressed to AreaFix 70:1/0 from you at your BIZynet Node number will allow you to add, delete, or rescan any of the BIZynet echoes. If AreaFix's do not work properly, you may send a message to the BIZynet Coordinator at BIZynet BBS (70:1/0) via NetMail or the BIZYNET echo. Please ensure your system is ready to accept any new echoes before sending your request. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 18 ] 4.4.1 Changing Echo Assignments You may change your BIZynet echo selection at any time by sending a message to the BIZYnet Coordinator at 70:1/0 via NetMail or the BIZYNET echo. Please indicate the TAG_NAME you wish to add or drop rather than it's descriptive title. Area or echo assignments may also be modified automatically by sending an AreaFix message to the Central Host (70:1/0) or to your BIZynet Hub. You must ensure your BIZynet Node Number appears in the From line and your session password is included in the Subject line. Requests for rescans of the echo messages is not supported by all of the BIZynet members. If you need copies of the messages currently available, your request must be addressed to IMail or direct to the BIZynet Coordinator. 4.5 Going Down Please keep in mind BIZynet is a business network and systems that are down or unreliable effects how the business community views it's usefulness. Frequent unannounced problems may require changing a Hub or Nodes status until the problems are corrected. If your node will be down for an extended period, inform your Hub and the BIZynet Coordinator as soon as possible. While your system is off-line, please ensure the phone will either ring or give a busy signal. The only thing which should ever answer the telephone is Fido compatible software which accepts mail. If you will be leaving your system unattended for an extended period of time, you should notify the BIZynet coordinator. Systems have a tendency to "crash" now and then, and it helps to know it is a temporary condition if it occurs. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 19 ] 5.0 SYSOP Responsibilities As the SYSOP of a Node, you can generally do as you please as long as you are not annoying other Nodes in BIZynet and do not participate in the distribution of pirated software or other illegal behavior via BIZynet. In order to understand the meaning of "annoying", it is incumbent upon all SYSOP's to occasionally re-read BIZynet policy. New SYSOP's must familiarize themselves with this document and policy before requesting a Node number. 5.1 Traffic Leaving BIZynet Traffic initiated in BIZynet's echoes or any NetMail carrying BIZynet's zone number (70:) is not authorized to be introduced or transferred to any other network without the express permission of ShareGames and the recipient network. Violations of this policy, particularly Hub-Routed NetMail, will be cause for access termination without refund. The unused portion of the connect fees will be used to defray costs incurred by the recipient network. 5.2 Traffic Entering BIZynet All SYSOP's listed in the Node List are responsible for traffic entering BIZynet via their system. This includes (but is not limited to) traffic entered by users, Nodes, and any other networks for which the system might act as a gateway. If a SYSOP allows "outside" messages to enter BIZynet via their system, the gateway system must be clearly identified by a BIZynet Node number as the point of origin of that message, and it must act as a gateway in the reverse direction. Should such traffic result in a violation of Policy, the SYSOP must rectify the situation. 5.2.1 Review of Mail All SYSOP's and echo Moderators are expected to monitor traffic addressed to and from their system to maintain quality and insure illegal activities are not involved. Under BIZynet policy guidelines, messages that are encrypted, compressed, or in a foreign language are also subject to monitoring. Users who refuse to provide readable versions of their traffic are not authorized access to BIZynet. 5.2.2 Encryption of Mail BIZynet's technology is such that privacy of messages cannot be guaranteed. As a SYSOP, you have the right to review traffic flowing via your system, if for no other reason than to ensure the system is not being used for illegal purposes. Therefore, encrypted and/or traffic that is rendered otherwise unreadable by the SYSOP may be routed via BIZynet only if the sender is willing to provide readable copies or the decryption method on request. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 20 ] 5.2.3 Alteration/Deletion of Mail You may not modify, other than as required for routing or other technical purposes, any message, NetMail or EchoMail, passing through the system from one BIZynet Node to another. In addition to automatically controlling the number of messages retained on their system, SYSOP's are authorized to delete specific BIZynet EchoMail messages from their bases if they feel it is inappropriate or objectionable. Messages meeting this criteria, that are addressed to a user of the system, may only be removed by delivery via a private local message base. 5.2.4 Private NetMail The word "private" should be used with great care, especially with users of a BBS. Some countries have laws which deal with "private mail", and it should be made clear that the word "private" does not imply that no person other than the recipient can read messages. Documentation on the SYSOP's system should also indicate that all messages, including Private NetMail can and will be monitored by the SYSOP. SYSOP's who cannot provide this distinction should consider not offering users the option of "private mail". 5.2.5 Disclosure of Mail Disclosing or in any way using information contained in message traffic not addressed to you or written by you is considered inappropriate, unless the traffic has been formally released by the author or the recipient. This does not apply to EchoMail which is by definition a broadcast medium, and where private mail is often used to keep an area restricted. Please also refer to other paragraphs on Privacy. 5.2.6 Failing to Route Mail SYSOP's are required to route all traffic they have agreed to. If you do not forward a message, when you previously agreed to perform such routing, the message must be returned to the SYSOP of the Node at which it entered BIZynet with an explanation of why it was not forwarded. Messages which are addressed to or from a Node which is not in the current Node List are an exception in that they do not qualify for routing. Intentionally stopping or delaying any messages authorized for routing without notifying the sender constitutes grounds for terminating the offending Node or Hubs access to BIZynet. In cases due to technical problems, it does not become grounds unless it persists. 5.3 Encourage New BIZynet Subscribers All SYSOP's are encouraged to operate a bulletin board system which is freely available for distributing BIZynet's policy, and Node List to new SYSOP's or individuals interested in Stand-Alone Nodes. Passing information to potential subscribers expands BIZynet's growth and improves your business potential. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 21 ] 6.0 Definitions The following paragraphs define some of the words and concepts describing BIZynet and its associated structure. 6.1 BIZyNews BIZyNews will start as a monthly newsletter, distributed in electronic form, throughout the network on the BIZYNET Echo. It is an important medium by which BIZynet system operators and users can communicate with each other. BIZyNews provides a sense of being a community of people with common interests. Accordingly, SYSOP's and users are encouraged to contribute to BIZyNews. Contributions must be submitted to Node 70:1/1. A file describing the format to be used will be available from 70:1/1 and all Hubs. 6.2 Geography There are no geographical boundaries for BIZynet. The Hosts are central to all Hubs in regards to traffic routing. Nodes are not required to be in the same area as their Hub. In many cases it is more cost effective for a Hub's nodes to actually be in an adjoining state. Every effort will be made to ensure each Hub has it's share of nodes and phone costs are minimized. 6.3 Zone Mail Hour Zone Mail Hour is sometimes referred to as National Mail Hour and Network Mail hour. The term Zone Mail Hour (ZMH) is more accurate. Zone Mail Hour (ZMH) is the defined time during which all FidoNet Nodes in a zone are required to be able to accept NetMail. Nodes and Hubs that carry FidoNet in addition to BIZynet may exclude handling of BIZynet traffic during the ZMH to avoid any conflicts. 6.4 Daylight Savings Time BIZynet does not observe daylight savings time. Your polling schedule will be based on your local prime time calling period. It is not necessary to change your event scheduling and you may continue to use your local time. 6.5 Node Numbers Each Node number must be unique. The Zone/Region number will always be 70. The Network numbers will be that of the Host system and Node numbers will be assigned consecutively from 5 through 9999. Changing access between Hosts will only require changing your Network number. Please include your Node Number on all correspondence with BIZynet and ShareGames. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 22 ] 6.6 Node List The Node List is a file updated as required (normally compiled weekly on Thursday to correspond to FidoNet scheduling) which contains the addresses of all recognized BIZynet Nodes. This file will be made available by the Hosts not later than Midnight each Saturday, and is available for download or file request using the key word "BIZYLIST". All Nodes are required to maintain a complete up-to-date BIZynet Node List (BIZYLIST.nnn), membership list (BBS_BIZY.TXT), and BIZynet echo listing (AREABIZY.TXT). The file will be titled BIZYLIST.nnn in the St. Louis format. Where nnn will be the number of the day in that year it is published. When in ZIPed format, the first character of nnn will be a "Z". For example: BIZYLIST.045 would be the ASCII text Node List for the 45th day of the year, BIZYLIST.Z45 would be the ZIP compressed version, BIZYLIST.A45 indicates the ARC compressed version. Currently the ARC version will be the format used. To be included in the Node List, a system must meet the requirements defined by this document. No other requirements may be imposed. 6.7 Annoying Behavior There are references throughout this policy to "annoying" behavior. It is difficult to define this term, as it is based upon the judgement of the individual. Generally speaking, annoying behavior irritates, bothers, or causes harm to some other person. It is not necessary to break a rule or law to be annoying. Excessively annoying behavior may be cause for termination and revoking a system's Node Number assignment. There is a distinction between excessively annoying behavior and annoying behavior. For example, there is a learning curve that each new SYSOP must climb, both in the technical issues of how to set up the software and the social issues of how to interact with BIZynet. It is a rare SYSOP who, at some point in this journey, does not manage to annoy others. Only when such behavior persists, after being pointed out to the SYSOP, does it becomes excessively annoying. This does not imply that it is not possible to be excessively annoying without repetition (for example, deliberate falsification of mail would likely be excessively annoying on the very first try), but simply illustrates that a certain amount of tolerance is extended. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 23 ] 6.8 Commercial Use BIZynet is a commercial network and every effort should be expended to avoid imposing its business traffic on FidoNet or other 'free' networks. It is not deemed appropriate for a commercial enterprise to take advantage of their volunteered efforts to further their business interests. On the other hand, FidoNet provides a convenient and effective means for companies and users to exchange information, to the mutual benefit of all. The other networks could be forced to subsidize commercial operations by forwarding hub-routed NetMail, and could even find themselves involved in a lawsuit if any guarantee was suggested for mail delivery. It is therefore BIZynet policy that commercial mail is not to be routed via any volunteer network by BIZynet's subscribers. "Commercial mail" includes mail which furthers specific business interests without being of benefit to a volunteer network as a whole. Examples include company-internal mail, inter-corporate mail, specific product inquiries (price quotes, for instance), orders and their follow-ups, and all other subjects specifically related to business. 6.9 Advertising Part of the purpose of BIZynet is to allow announcing the availability of products and services via its echo networking channels. However, it is inappropriate to make an announcement to the entire network for something not mailable and only available in your city. If your product or service is only of interest to your immediate area, you should contact your Hub and request a Hub level echo be established. Several are already included as suggestions in the BIZORDER.DOC form. 6.10 Bombing Runs Bombing Runs are considered annoying. Everyone's time is valuable and placing frequent announcements or requests for information or simultaneously placing them on multiple echoes is excessive. Carbon copies via Hub-Routed NetMail are also a waste of resources when an echo message will reach everyone involved. Please don't forget you are not the only one with a phone bill. 6.11 EchoMail EchoMail refers to messages introduced into the titled echoes for general distribution and reading on all Nodes. All EchoMail, unless on a dedicated echo established as private or restricted, is considered public and private flags may be stripped or ignored. Using EchoMail for delivery to one person also means unreadable copies (except by SYSOP's) would be sent to all nodes. 6.12 NetMail NetMail refers to messages sent to one person or Node. These messages are not to be delivered or routed to any Node not in the direct path between sender and recipient. NetMail can be tagged private or directed to all on the destination Node. Direct dial delivery is somewhat faster and more private. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 24 ] 7.0 BIZynet Policy This document also establishes the policy for SYSOP's and subscribers who are members of the BIZynet organization of electronic bulletin board systems. As such, it constitutes a contract between the subscribing nodes and ShareGames. Separate policy documents may be issued at the Hub level to provide additional detail on local procedures. Ordinarily, these policies may not contradict this policy. However, with the approval of ShareGames, local policy can be used to implement differences required due to local conditions. These local policies may not place additional restrictions on members of BIZynet beyond those included in this document, other than enforcement of local mail periods. 7.1 General Liability Each BIZynet subscriber agrees that liability of any kind for matters relating directly or indirectly to the use of the BIZynet network will not be assumed by ShareGames or BIZynet. In particular, no liability can be assumed for the accuracy or legality of message and/or file traffic routed via the network. ShareGames, BIZynet, and the members of the network are also not liable for incidental or consequential damages including, but not limited to, destruction of data or damage to your equipment as a result of messages or files routed via the network. All information must be taken "as is" and subscribers assume the entire risk of any harm that might occur through the use of BIZynet, and that information. 7.2 Electronic Communications Privacy Act Pursuant to the Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986 (18 U.S.C. 2510 et seq.), notice is hereby given that there are no facilities provided by the BIZynet network for sending or receiving truly private or confidential electronic communications. 7.3 License Considerations Because belonging to BIZynet can be construed as operating a business, each subscribing system should ensure they are properly licensed with all of the appropriate local, state, and federal agencies. This is particularly true if callers are expected to pay for access to the BIZynet echoes or Hubs charging for use of their system for message routing. This includes, but is not limited to, Self Employment Taxes, Sales Taxes, Business Licenses, and using business rather than residential telephone lines. ShareGames and BIZynet cannot be held liable for failure of it's subscribers to comply with local, state, and federal licensing requirements. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 25 ] 7.4 Cause for Termination Access to BIZynet may be terminated by ShareGames and the BIZynet Coordinator whenever it is deemed in the best interests of the network. Any unused connect fees will be refunded unless required to cover costs accrued as a result of the cause for termination. If you feel you have been terminated without warning and ShareGames has not contacted you, please call the 24-hour voice number (619) 283-0472 as soon as possible. It may simply be a technical or billing problem. The following paragraphs define some of the causes for termination. 7.4.1 Illegal Activities Using BIZynet to transfer messages involving illegal activities will be cause for terminating a caller or nodes access to the system. As an example; some of the illegal activities are passing stolen credit card numbers, drug traffic, transfer of stolen property, chain letter schemes, child pornography, or transferring pirate copies of software. In addition to terminating access, all intercepted files and/messages will be turned over to the proper authorities for action. 7.4.2 System Caller Violations Normally problems with a callers conduct or unnecessary message loading can be corrected by NetMail without blocking access to the caller. In most cases it should be taken care of by the SYSOP before notification is required. Abusive or illegal activities conducted by callers of a BIZynet Node will be pointed out to the SYSOP via NetMail. If after notification, the SYSOP fails to take the appropriate action or refuses to block access (when requested) to the identified caller, use of the BIZynet Node Number will be revoked. 7.4.3 Unauthorized Routing Knowingly providing access to the BIZynet echo messages or routing the traffic to other systems that are not included in the BIZynet Node List is sufficient cause for termination. This does not include callers using off-line readers such as the QWK and XRS variety for their personal use. However, placing those messages in a message base for callers to access on another BBS or system does constitute unauthorized distribution. In most cases, it would be due to a misunderstanding and can be resolved by the system acquiring a BIZynet Node Number. BIZynet Policy and Structure [ 26 ] 7.5 Language The official language of BIZynet's commercial echo network is English. All documentation must exist in English. However, translation into other languages is encouraged. Translations from languages other than English or readable versions of encrypted or compressed messages may be requested by the BIZynet Coordinator to verify illegal activities are not involved. 7.6 Text Support To further improve its business appearance, BIZynet will support the upper IBM ASCII characters. Being able to use the foreign letters, line drawing, and other decorative characters will allow more attractive announcements. Nodes whose equipment will not support or have problems with the codes are expected to provide their own filtering or translation software. 7.7 Use of Aliases Because BIZynet is for conducting business, the use of aliases or unregistered names is not appropriate. BBS Nodes which allow the use of handles or alias names must provide methods to ensure only real names are used in the "FROM" line for entering traffic into BIZynet. SYSOP's are also encouraged to try to establish callers on their system are using their legal names. 7.8 Privacy In general, sensitive material should not be sent via BIZynet. This ideal is often compromised. In general, if the sender of a message specifically requests the text of the message be kept confidential either in the text or by setting the private flag, release of the message in a public form is not appropriate. Although privacy is not guaranteed, in some cases legal action may result. 7.8.1 Disclosure of Mail Disclosing or in any way using information contained in mail traffic not addressed to you or written by you is considered inappropriate, unless the traffic has been formally released by the author or the recipient. This does not usually apply to EchoMail, which is by definition a broadcast medium. The exceptions include publishing the contents of EchoMail which can constitute a violation of the author's and/or ShareGames copyrights. 8.0 Credits and Acknowledgments BIZynet and BIZynet BBS are Trademarks of ShareGames.
