If you don't have all of the DOS-CALC files on a floppy disk, do so now. Change directories to the location where the DOS-CALC files are located. Place a blank, formatted disk in one of your disk drives. COPY all of the DOS-CALC files listed on page iii to the floppy disk. Do not use your master as your working disk! ********************** HARD DISK INSTALLATION ********************* Place the DOS-CALC master disk in your disk drive. At the DOS prompt, type the letter of the drive which contains the DOS-CALC master copy, such as: A: or B: If the DOS-CALC files are located in the directory CALC, type CD\CALC THEN type: INSTALL C to install onto C drive OR type: INSTALL D to install onto D drive All of the files will be copied to the drive you specified and will be located in the directory named: CALC. Adding the drive letter and directory (example: C:\CALC) to the AUTOEXEC path will allow you to start DOS-CALC without having to enter the drive letter and path each time (this is not necessary to do). ********************* FLOPPY DISK INSTALLATION ******************** Place the DOS-CALC master disk in your disk drive. At the DOS prompt, type the letter of the drive which contains your master of DOS-CALC, such as: A: or B: CHOOSE: * At the A> or B> prompt, type: COPY *.* A: to install DOS-CALC to a floppy located on drive A: * At the A> or B> prompt, type: COPY *.* B: to install DOS-CALC to a floppy located on drive B: NOTE: DOS-CALC will require about 240k of disk space on your floppy disk. Floppy disk operation is primarily intended for portable laptop computers without a hard drive. *********************** PRINTING THIS MANUAL ********************** Have your line printer turned on and paper ready. At the DOS prompt, change to the drive and directory which contains the DOS-CALC files. Type: PRINTMAN and press the Enter key. ************************ VIEWING THIS MANUAL ********************** At the DOS prompt, change to the drive and directory which contains the DOS-CALC files. Type: VIEWMAN and press the Enter key. -1- WINDOWS SETUP Two (2) files are provided to make DOS-CALC easy to use within the MicroSoft Window's environment: DOS-CALC.PIF DOS-CALC.ICO Follow these easy steps to setup the DOS-CALC icon in Windows: 1. Enter MicroSoft Windows' Program Manager. 2. Select the Window you want the DOS-CALC icon to be located in. For example: the "Application" window. 3. Select File menu. 4. Select New (under the File menu). 5. Select Program Item and activate the OK button. 6. Type in: [drive]:\CALC\DOS-CALC in the Description box and press the Tab key. 7. Type in [drive]:\CALC\DOS-CALC.PIF in the Command Line box. 8. Select: Change Icon. 9. Type in: [drive]:\CALC\DOS-CALC.ICO and select OK. 10. Select OK. Now you will be able to select and "double click" on the DOS-CALC icon to start DOS-CALC within the Windows environment. SWITCHING TO DOS-CALC You can easily switch to DOS-CALC from another program running within the Windows environment. 1. Hold the Ctrl key down and press the Esc key. A window will appear asking what program you want to switch to. 2. If DOS-CALC has not been opened, select the Program Manager. 3. Select the DOS-CALC icon and start DOS-CALC. 4. When you are finished running DOS-CALC, you can once again hold the Ctrl key down and press the Esc key. The window asking what program you want to switch to will again appear. You can select the program you were previously using. Using this technique, you can switch back and forth from one program to another. SPECIAL NOTE: DOS-CALC has been setup to run as a full screen window application. DOS-CALC, just like other DOS programs running within the Windows environment work best as full screen window applications. -2- OPERATION DOS-CALC is just as easy to use as a conventional hand held or desk top algebraic calculator. TO START DOS-CALC If you have installed DOS-CALC on your hard drive and included it in your path statement, simply type DOS-CALC at any DOS prompt and press the Enter key. NOTE: The short form is DC If you have installed the DOS-CALC icon in Windows, simply double click on the DOS-CALC icon. If you have installed DOS-CALC onto a floppy disk, simply type the letter drive where DOS-CALC is located at the DOS prompt (Example: A: or B:). Then type: DOS-CALC and press the Enter key. TO QUIT DOS-CALC Press the Esc key to immediately quit DOS-CALC. There is NOT a confirmation asking if you want to quit. All of the information is automatically saved when you quit. Restarting DOS-CALC will start you exactly where you previously left off. CALCULATOR BASICS DOS-CALC has all of the information you need, right in front of you. Help is always available by pressing the F1 function key. Other available functions are shown at the bottom left and bottom right of the screen. All input to DOS-CALC is made by the keyboard. Numbers are entered by using the numeric keypad or number keys at the top of the keyboard. Standard math operations are: + for adding - for subtracting * or x for multiplying / for dividing = or Enter to return the result from a math operation e for exponents (example: 1.234e-6) Chained operations are possible by typing in a number, pressing an operator key, typing in another number and operator key until all of the operations are complete. Pressing = or Enter will then return the final result. Example: 4.25 + 6.75 * 3.00 = returns: 33.00 -3- The tape printout for the previous example would look like: 4.25 6.75 + 3.00 * 33.00 = CLEAR AN OPERATION Press the letter key C to clear the last operation, without clearing the entire tape. A line is printed across the tape with the letter C to indicate that the clear key was pressed at that point. ___________________________________________________________________ DECIMAL DISPLAY DOS-CALC uses a fixed decimal display. The default decimal display when DOS-CALC is started is 2 places. Use the left or right arrow keys to change the number of decimal places to be displayed. DOS-CALC stores numbers internally as a high precision number, but rounds them off to match the decimal display you have selected. This can be seen by typing in: 3.28974289 + 1.71738121 = Use the left and right arrow keys to see how the automatic round- off feature works. ___________________________________________________________________ TAPE FEATURES AND OPERATION SCROLLING THE TAPE: The tape printout allows you to go back and check or review previous calculations. The up and down arrow keys scroll the tape up or down one line at a time. The Page Up and Page Down keys scroll the displayed portion of the tape up and down. The Home and End keys scroll the tape to the beginning or end of the tape. You can scroll to any location on the tape and start to enter a new number and operation. DOS-CALC automatically goes to the End of the tape before printing your new entry. SAVING THE TAPE AS A DOS TEXT FILE: The tape will hold a maximum 180 lines of information. If you exceed 180 lines, DOS-CALC will drop lines at the beginning and save the last lines entered. DOS-CALC saves all of the tape information when you quit and reloads it automatically the next time you start. You can save the tape information as a DOS text file by pressing the Shift and F1 keys. A prompt is given for you to enter a file name for the text file. The tape file name is printed on the tape for later reference. -4- PRINTING THE TAPE: The entire tape can be printed by pressing the F3 key. All 180 lines of information will print on one 8-1/2" by 11" page. CLEARING THE TAPE: Pressing F2 clears all of the information from the tape. A new, blank tape is ready for you. Pressing F2 DOES NOT save the tape! If you want to save the tape information before clearing it, be sure to press Shift F3 first. ___________________________________________________________________ FUNCTION KEYS The function keys allow DOS-CALC to have more features. All of the functions are listed at the bottom left and bottom right of the DOS-CALC screen. F1 HELP function Help is available by pressing the F1 key. A shareware notice is displayed first. This is the only notice DOS-CALC uses! Pressing the Enter key will get you to the help INDEX. Use the arrow keys to select the topic you need help with and press the Enter key. A help page containing information on that topic will be displayed. Press Enter to return to the help INDEX or Esc to return to DOS-CALC. F2 CLEAR TAPE function Pressing F2 clears all of the information from the tape. Only press this key if you no longer need the tape information. A new "blank" tape is ready for more calculations after you press F2. F3 PRINT TAPE function Pressing F3 prints the entire contents of the tape on one 8-1/2" by 11" page. Have your line printer ready and on before pressing F3. F4 +/- CHANGE SIGN function Use this function to change a number from positive to negative or from negative to positive. Pressing F4 repeatedly, toggles between positive and negative. You must use F4 instead of the + or - key to change the sign of a number. DOS-CALC interprets the + and - keys as operators for adding and subtracting rather than changing the sign. -5- F5 û SQUARE ROOT function Use this function to return the square root of the number showing in the display. F6 SINe function Use this function to return the SIN of the number showing in the display. F7 COSine function Use this function to return the COS of the number showing in the display. F8 TANgent function Use this function to return the TAN of the number showing in the display. F9 LOG function Use this function to return the COMMON LOG of the number showing in the display. The number in the display must be greater than 0. F10 LN function Use this function to return the NATURAL LOG of the number showing in the display. The number in the display must be greater than 0. Shift + F1 SAVE TAPE function Use this function to save the contents of the tape as a DOS text file. The tape must have information on it for this function to work. Enter a file name at the prompt and press the Enter key. The contents of the tape will be saved as a DOS text file which can be opened by another program. Shift + F2 X - M function Use this function to exchange (swap) the contents in the display with the contents of the M memory register. Shift + F3 LINEAR FIT function This function allows you to enter 2 (X and Y) data points and will return the values for m and b for the linear formula: Y = mX + b You can then solve for Y by multiplying any value for X by m and adding b. This is a straight line (linear) formula. -6- Shift + F4 1/x function Use this function to return the reciprocal of any number (other than 0). Shift + F5 xý function Use this function to square (raise to the power of 2) the number in the display. Shift + F6 xü function Use this function to raise the number in the display to any power. Shift + F7 LOAN PMT function This is a very handy annuity function which will return information about an installment loan. Prompts are given for the information required. First, enter the loan amount and press the Enter key. Second, enter the percentage interest rate (example: 12.75) and press the Enter key. Third, enter the number of installments (example: 36 for a 3 year loan with monthly payments) for the loan and press the Enter key. DOS-CALC will return the total cost of the loan, the interest which will be paid and the amount for each installment payment. Shift + F8 LOAN BAL function This annuity function will calculate the (payoff) balance for an installment loan after any payment period. In other words, if you have a 36 month installment loan and you would like to know what the remaining amount of the loan is after 14 months, you would use this function to find out. First, enter the amount for each installment payment and press the Enter key. Second, enter the amount of the interest being charged (example 12.75) and press the Enter key. Third, enter the total number of installments for the loan (example: 36) and press the Enter key. Forth, enter the last installment number made, for which you want to find the remaining balance (example: 14) and press the Enter key. DOS-CALC will return the total amount of interest paid, the total amount paid and the remaining balance of the loan. Shift + F9 MESSAGE function Use the message function to type in a short, one line note on the tape. This allows you to reference calculations easier. Shift + F10 PI function This function enters the value for PI into the display. The value for PI is internally stored as 3.1415926536 even though its displayed accuracy is only up to 6 decimal places. -7- MEMORY REGISTER The M memory register is used to easily store a number during operations. Pressing the letter key M stores the number in the display in the M memory register. The value of the number in the M memory register is shown in the center right hand side of the DOS-CALC screen. The value stored in the M memory register can be recalled to the display at any time by pressing the letter key R (recall memory). The current number in the display can be swapped with the current number in the M memory register by holding the Shift key down and pressing the F2 key. ___________________________________________________________________ CONSTANT MEMORY REGISTERS The six constant memory registers are available for numbers which you use on a frequent basis. To enter a number into any one of the constant memory registers hold the Ctrl key down and press the F10 key. Adding or editing can be done to any or all of the constant memory registers. Use the Tab or Enter key to move from one constant memory register to the next. Press the Esc key when you have finished. Use the Ctrl and F(1 to 6) keys to recall any one of the constant memory register numbers into the display. Example: If you had to convert inches to centimeters on a frequent basis, you could save the value 2.54 in one of the constant registers. The next time you had to convert a value of inches to centimeters you would hold down the Ctrl key and press the F(1 - 6) key to return the value of 2.54. You would then press the * key, enter the value of inches to convert and press the Enter key. The result would be the conversion from inches to centimeters. A list of other conversions are located on the following pages. ___________________________________________________________________ SCREEN SAVER DOS-CALC has a built in screen saver function. Pressing the space bar manually starts the screen saver feature. Whenever the screen saver feature has been activated, pressing the space bar will return you back to the DOS-CALC screen. The screen saver function can be set to activate after any amount of time when no keyboard activity has taken place. Pressing the letter S key allows you to change the amount of time or turn the automatic feature off. Entering 0, turns the automatic screen saver feature off. Even if the automatic feature has been turned off, the screen saver can still be manually activated by pressing the space bar.
