Shorter arrows on both sides of a directory indicatethat not all files and subdirectories below that directory aretagged. When restoring a tape volume, make sure there is enough free diskspace to accommodate the restored files. If there is not enoughfree disk space, the backup system restores as much data as it canfrom the tape, and then notifies you that there is insufficient diskspace available. The restore operation stops at that point. Torestore the rest of the tape volume, you must first delete enoughunwanted files from your disk to free the necessary space. Then, start the restore operation as usual. To aid you in determining howmuch data is being restored to your disk, a running total ofselected files and bytes is provided. PASSWORDIf the selected tape volume is password protected, the displayprompts you to enter the password. Type the correct password andpress Enter. UTILITIESThe Utilities Menu provides access to useful auxiliary tape oper-ations. These operations are explained below: TAPE STATUSThe Tape Status feature displays general information on the tapecurrently in the drive. It reports the number of bytes in use onthe tape so that you can tell if another backup volume of a specificsize will fit. The number of backup volumes currently on the tapeand the format type and date are also displayed. RETENSION TAPEThis option applies even tension to the entire tape. New tapes, tapes that have been in storage, or tapes that have been transportedshould be retensioned before use. Load the tape to be retensioned inthe tape drive and press F1 to begin the operation. When completed, press F10 to return to the Utilities Menu, or load another tape andpress F1 to retension it. FORMAT TAPENew tapes or tapes formatted for use with non-QIC-40 backup systemsmust be formatted before use. Formatting initializes the tape to aknown state, partitions it into sectors, and maps all unusablesectors on the tape. The format process typically takes 72 minuteson a PC or XT class computer and 36 minutes on an AT class com-puter. Formatting 60MB tapes takes 50% longer. Formatting alsoerases all data on a tape.Formatting can be scheduled for unattended execution. Refer to thebackup system user's guide or the Unattended Backup help text forfurther information. FORMAT TAPENew tapes or tapes formatted for use with other backup systems mustbe formatted before use. The format process takes less than 30seconds. Formatting erases all data on the tape and writes new tapeheader information which allows the backup software to recognize thetape. QUICK ERASEThe Quick Erase feature erases only the tape directory. The processtypically takes less than one minute to complete. Be certain thetape you want to erase is in the tape drive before proceeding. SECURITY ERASEThe Security Erase feature erases all data from the tape toeliminate the possibility of recovering any of the information. It does not erase the format information. Be certain the tape youwant to erase is in the tape drive before proceeding. COMPARE FILES - TAPE TO DISKThis feature allows you to compare files on a tape to files on yourdisk. This operation is much like the Restore feature inappearance, allowing you to look at the tape directory and choosea specific tape volume from which to compare files. You can alsolook at a volume directory to select specific files or directoriesthat you would like to compare to those on your disk. All filesthat have been modified or deleted from the disk are reported.Select the files and directories to compare and either enter a newname for the error log file, or press F1 to accept the default filename ERROR.LOG and begin the compare. You may also delete the filename, then press F1 to begin the compare, indicating you do not wantan error log file produced. The Operation Status Screen displays the results as the compareoperation executes. SETUPS AUTO TAPE/DISK DATA COMPARISON AFTER BACKUPSelect "Y" to have the backup system automatically make a secondpass over each backup to verify that all files written on the tapeare identical to those on the disk. OVERWRITE EXISTING FILES DURING RESTORESelect "Y" to allow a restore operation to overwrite any file ofthe same name on the destination disk. Select "N" to insure againstaccidentally overwriting files on your disk from a tape volume withduplicate file names. However, if you are trying to restore a goodcopy of a file to replace a file that is corrupted on the disk, thenyou must either restore that file to a different name, delete thecorrupted file from the disk, or enter "Y" for this option. READ ONLY MODE ON BACKUPSSelect "N" to clear the archive bit that indicates that a file hasbeen modified since the last backup. This allows you to back uponly those files modified since the last backup operation. All filesmodified since the last backup are indicated by MOD appearing in theTYPE column on the Selective Backup directory screen.Select "Y" to have the backup system perform backups without writingto the disk to clear the archive bit. This can be a very usefulfeature on a network system where backups are likely to be made fromworkstations that are restricted from writing to the disk. CONCURRENT DISK/TAPE OPERATIONSelect "Y" to allow the backup system to use more than one DMA chan-nel at a time, and thus operate at maximum speed. If you experience"excessive retry" errors during tape operations, your computer maynot support concurrent DMA operation. Select "N" for this setupoption to eliminate the errors. DMA CHANNELEnter the Direct Memory Access (DMA) channel to be used by the tapedrive. Select a DMA channel that does not conflict with your comput-er's configuration. The factory default is channel 1, which isunused in stand-alone systems, but is used in network operation.Channel 2 is reserved for diskette operation. If you select channel2, diskettes may not be backed up in concurrent DMA mode. Channel 3is reserved for hard disk control and should not be selected for useby the tape drive.Enter the desired DMA channel number. If you select DMA channel 2 or3, you must reset the DMA channel jumpers on the tape controllercard accordingly. Refer to the Hardware Installation Guide fordetails. INTERRUPTThe tape controller card must use an interrupt from 2 to 7 in orderto operate properly. The factory default interrupt varies and neednot be changed if your tape backup system operates properly. If thetape controller card and another device in your computer use thesame interrupt simultaneously, the tape backup system will behaveunpredictably. You must select a different interrupt for the tapecontroller card to use. Refer to your computer's technical referencemanual or the manuals accompanying any peripheral devices for infor-mation on interrupt usage. You may enter any interrupt from 2 to 7 that is not in use. You mustalso set the interrupt jumper on the tape controller card to corre-spond to the value entered on this screen. Refer to the HardwareInstallation Guide for details. I/O ADDRESSThe factory default starting I/O address is hex 300. Refer to theHardware Installation Guide or other technical documentation in-cluded with your tape backup system for other valid starting I/Oaddresses. If you change the I/O address, you must set the I/O ad-dress jumpers or DIP switch on the tape controller card accordingly. TAPE ADAPTER BOARD INSTALLEDIf your installation uses a Tape Adapter Board, and you have notreset its address jumper, enter "Y" for this setup option. If youset the Tape Adapter Board to use the Primary Address, enter "N" forthis setup option. A Tape Adapter Board is necessary when you havetwo or more diskette drives in your computer or you are using anexternal tape drive.Technical Note: Addresses used by this system are as follows: Primary Address - 3F0 hex Secondary Address - 370 hex (Factory setting)Note: No Tape Adapter Board is available for PS/2 machines. SORT TYPEPress the left- or right-arrow key to cycle through the availablesort types. The files within a directory may be sorted by name, extension or date. The selected sort type is used when viewing thefiles in a directory during any selective operation. No sort mayalso be chosen. HARDWARE/SOFTWARE DATA COMPRESSION TYPE -There are three types of software data compression, and two types ofhardware data compression. None selects no compression, OptimizeSpace selects standard data compression, and Optimize Time selectshigh-speed compression (not available if you are using a tape con-troller with hardware data compression). Use the left- or right-ar-row key to highlight your choice. See the Selective Backup help textfor further information. SOFTWARE INSTALLATIONThe backup system software may be installed on any DOS-recognizablehard disk. The installation procedure is menu-driven and self-explanatory. The installation process takes approximately threeminutes.During installation, you will be asked the drive and directory inwhich to install the backup software, and about aspects of yourhardware configuration (e.g., whether you have a color monitor,etc.). You will also be prompted to install the Unattended Backupsoftware. The backup system software will then be installed on yourhard disk. The file names are listed on your screen as they arecopied. The final installation question prompts you to enter thedrive letter from which your system boots. The message "CHECKING CONFIG.SYS FILE" is then briefly displayed. This indicates that the software is checking the number of availablebuffers. If less than 17 buffers are available, the installationsoftware sets the number of buffers to 17 in the CONFIG.SYS file.Insuring that at least 17 buffers are available improves the backupsystem's performance. Your original CONFIG.SYS file is saved in afile called CONFIG.Bxx where xx is a number between 00 and 99.If you chose to install the Unattended Backup software, theInstallation program inserts a command sequence beginning on thefirst line of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The message "CHECKINGAUTOEXEC.BAT FILE" follows. When AUTOEXEC.BAT is modified, a copyof the original file is stored as AUTOEXEC.Bxx, where xx is a numberbetween 00 and 99. Refer to the Software Installation section inthe backup system user's guide for further information on UnattendedBackup. If your CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files were modified, the softwareinstructs you to reboot your computer before using the backup systemso that the new CONFIG.SYS file can increase the number of DOSbuffers to 17 or the new AUTOEXEC.BAT file can load thememory-resident Unattended Backup software. If conflicts between the Unattended Backup software and othermemory-resident programs arise, refer to the Software Installationsection in the backup system user's guide for further information. After installing the software, you may want to review or change thesystem default settings. These options are explained under Setupson the Help Menu, accessible from the Main Menu of the tapesoftware. UNATTENDED BACKUP MODEBASIC OPERATIONNOTE: The Unattended Backup software must be installed as explainedin the backup system user's guide to use any of the UnattendedBackup features.Unattended Backup mode allows you to perform tape operations whenyour computer is not in use. Routine and/or time-consumingoperations such as daily backups or formatting a tape can be done atyour convenience. If you arrived at the Unattended Backup Schedule screen from theBackup Menu or from the Format Tape option, the Type and Drivefields already contain the information you entered for that tapeoperation. If not, type the first letter of the desired operation inthe TYPE field. The available operations are listed at the bottom ofthe screen. Then type the drive letter in the DRIVE field. Thecursor is then in the TIME field, as indicated by the default timebeing displayed in bold print. Press Enter to accept the defaulttime or type the time of your choice and press Enter. Use a 12-hourformat and indicate am or pm. An invalid time will not be accepted. The DATE field allows you to schedule the tape operation for one ormore days of the week. To delete an unwanted schedule line, move thecursor to that line and press F2. The actual deletion of the line(and its associated tag list for a Selective operation) occurs onlywhen the new schedule is saved. The scheduled operation(s) will execute only if your computer is notin use and a DOS prompt is displayed on the screen. If you areworking with a program when an unattended tape operation isscheduled to begin, the Unattended Backup program beeps four times. It continues to beep every ten minutes until you exit the program. At the DOS prompt the Unattended Backup program beeps four timeswhen a scheduled operation is ready to begin. If no keyboardactivity is detected for 30 seconds following the four beeps, thescheduled operation is executed. To clear a waiting unattended tapeoperation and discontinue the signal beeps, press the hot key(alt-d). TAPE ADAPTER BOARDThe Tape Adapter Board is an accessory board for use with yourtape drive if you have one of the following configurations:1) External tape drive;2) Internal tape drive and two or more diskette drives.Note: No Tape Adapter Board is available for PS/2 machines. TAPE CRTThe purpose of this utility is to provide an interactive tool tohelp you place the tape drive where electrical interference isminimized. Some monitors generate electrical interference which causes errorsduring the operation of the backup system. By changing the locationof the tape drive, this problem can be minimized or eliminated. To run this test, insert a tape in the tape drive and type TAPE CRTat the DOS prompt. If electrical interference is affecting the tapedrive, the message "ELECTRICAL INTERFERENCE" is displayed and a tonesounds. Change the location of the tape drive or computer monitoruntil the tone and message disappear. BACKUP PATHEnter a path designating the part of your file system directory tobe loaded into memory. Your home directory automatically appears onthe editing line and can be changed if you wish to backup filesstarting from another directory.A Total Backup includes all files in the path you enter.A Selective Backup can include only files from the path you enter. [End of Text] ERROR LOGGINGThe menu software automatically logs errors encountered during anytape operation. Some errors are fatal (e.g., no tape in the drive).Other errors are non-fatal (e.g., inability to overwrite a writeprotected file on restore). Both types of errors are logged and canbe viewed by pressing F1 at the conclusion of the operation. Usethe up- and down-arrow keys to scroll through the log file. Errorsare always logged to the same file: ERROR.LOG This file remainson your hard disk; however, all subsequent tape operations overwritethis file. MULTI-VOLUME BACKUPSelect "Y" to allow a tape to contain more than one backup volume. The backup system adds each succeeding volume at the end of theprevious volume up to the capacity of the tape. Enter "N" to havethe backup system erase the tape directory before beginning eachbackup. The tape will then contain only one backup volume. RESTORE OWNER AND GROUP IDSelect "Y" to restore the owner and group identification as itappears on the backup volume. Enter "N" to assign the owner andgroup identification to the user restoring the data. You are also prompted to enter a tape name of up to 11 characters. The tape name is displayed on the Tape Status and Operation Statusscreens. If you do not enter a tape name, a default tape name basedon the current time and date is written on the tape. Our jumperless controller cards are designed to ease installation ofthe tape backup system. Before using your tape backup system, thetape controller card must be configured. For this purpose we offeryou the choice of AUTO CONFIGURE or MANUAL CONFIGURE.AUTO CONFIGURE - Press F1 to select AUTO CONFIGURE. In this modethe software interrogates your system to find the tape controllercard and to select the I/O address, and DMA and IRQ channels. Ifany of the automatically selected parameters are used by anotherdevice, your computer may lock up. Should this happen, cycle poweron your computer and configure the tape controller card using MANUALCONFIGURE.MANUAL CONFIGURE - Press F2 to select MANUAL CONFIGURE. In this modethe software prompts you to configure your tape controller card.Have the manuals for your computer and any peripheral devices handyto help you select available I/O addresses, and DMA and IRQchannels. Use this mode if you have difficulties with AUTOCONFIGURE. The software was unable to locate a tape controller board. Pleasere-install the board and repeat the installation procedure. If thisdoes not correct the problem, refer to your installation manual. HARDWARE SETUPSThis screen displays the configuration parameters in use by yourtape controller board. If you want to change any of this infor-mation, exit the tape software and type "CONFIG" at the DOS prompt. The setup categories are defined below: DMA CHANNEL:The tape controller board must use a Direct Memory Access (DMA)Channel to communicate with your computer and to transfer data toand from the tape drive. If possible, select a DMA channel for thetape drive that no other device is using. The DMA channel you usedepends in part on the processor in your computer. If you have an8086 or 8088-based computer, DMA channel 3 is reserved for hard diskuse and may not be selected for use by the tape drive. In 80286 and80386-based computers, DMA channel 3 is open and may be used for thetape drive. In all of these types of computers DMA channel 2 is usedby the diskette drive(s). You may select DMA channel 2 for use bythe tape drive without adversely affecting performance except whenbacking up diskettes. In this case, the tape software automaticallyswitches to non-concurrent DMA mode which prevents corruption of thedata but does slow the communication process somewhat. DMA channel 1is used by some network systems. If you are using a network, checkwith your network administrator for more information. DMA CHANNEL FOR COMPRESSION:In addition to the main DMA channel, the compression section of theJumperless Tape Controller With Data Compression must also use aDMA channel between 1 and 7 for communication. You may not sharea single DMA channel for both setups. DMA channels 4 through 7 areavailable only on 80286 and 80386-based computers. The use ofthese DMA channels is undefined in most computers, which means thatany of the four should work. Check your computer and peripheraldevice manuals for information on use of these DMA channels. If your computer is 8086 or 8088-based, you must choose another DMAchannel for compression. You may use only DMA channels 1 and 2. Donot use DMA channel 3 in these types of computers! If your computer does not have two free DMA channels, you mustselect "OFF" when configuring the DMA Channel for Compression. Beaware that doing so disables hardware data compression and furtherdegrades the performance of your tape controller. You can usesoftware data compression as explained in the Software Installationand Operation Guide. INTERRUPT:The tape controller must use an Interrupt between 2 and 7. Theinterrupt selected for the tape drive must not be used by any otherdevice in your computer. If an interrupt conflict does occur, thetape drive will not function. The manuals accompanying your computerand any peripheral devices should provide interrupt usageinformation. I/O START ADDRESS IN HEXADECIMAL:This setup indicates the starting I/O address which the tapecontroller uses to communicate with your computer. The I/O addressselected for the tape drive must not be used by any other device inyour computer. If an I/O address conflict does occur, the tape drivewill not function. The manuals accompanying your computer and anyperipheral devices should provide I/O address usage information.NOTE: I/O Start Address 370 is not valid for use with tapecontroller boards with hardware data compression.
