Newsreader for Windows A Newsbyte and Bix reader for Windows By Paul Kaliciak September 1992 Release INTRODUCTION It was literally the day that I planned to upload this program that I discovered that Microbytes "Bix" service has stopped operation. There are a couple of other things I want to do to this program in the near future (as I await the release of an improved Visual Basic 2.0), so I will not remove the Bix features until the next version. If you are a Newsbytes service subscriber, I hope you will find this program useful. I wrote it because I wanted a simple program that made the task of reading the news easier, while staying within Windows. INSTALLATION Copy newsread.exe and 3dlabel.vbx to any directory you want. The first time you start the program, it will create a newsread.ini file in that same directory. Under "Preferences", set the directory where you normally keep your unzipped Newsbyte files. All the help and explanation is on-line, with dynamic prompts that change as you move the mouse, as well as "flyout" help windows that explain all the functions. You do not need a mouse to work this program, but as usual, it sure helps! EPILOG Although it says version 1.1, this is the first release outside of my PC's four walls. I am posting it only on CRS, and ASK THAT THIS VERSION NOT BE DISTRIBUTED BEYOND CRS. This is a semi-BETA - it seems solid to me, but I want to get some feedback before sending it any farther. If you use and like this version, and/or have any suggestions to improve it (one is speed - I am hoping to greatly hasten the time it takes to process and sort each Newsbytes file), E-Mail me your thoughts on the Windows conference, 97, or via CompuServe mail, at address 70242,3375. Needless to say, I make no promises as to how this software will perform on your computer, and am not liable for any damage it may cause - you are, as with all programs, using this at your own risk.
