DOS MASTER The Manual INTRODUCTION DOS Master is an easy way to get a round DOS without having to remember all of the DOS commands. Instead it puts all of these command plus a lot more in easy to follow pull down menus and windows. Also, instead of having to type DIR every time you look at something, It is already there in a menu you can scroll around in. You can just press enter on a program to run it instead of typing it's name. Also just press enter on a directory name to go into it, instead of using CD all of the time. All the file management commands are in the pull down menus. So all you really need to know about DOS to use the DOS Master is the basic knowledge of how to manage files and directories. Steve Green Progressive Computer Technologies, Inc. 5100 Stream Ct. N.E. Albuquerque, New Mexico 87113 (505) 821-4949 Prodigy ID: DKGV62A Version 1.0 07-01-1992 ***** Unregistered Shareware Version ***** (C) Copyright PCT 1992 All Rights Reserved DOS MASTER - SCREEN DISPLAY MENU BAR: The screen display has a MENU BAR across the top. The Pull- Down Menus (Control, View, Directory, File, and Programs) are accessed with the Function Keys 1-5 or with ALT-C, ALT-V, ALT-D, ALT-F, and ALT-P, respectively. These Pull Down Menus are where all of the DOS Shell's options are listed. DIRECTORY WINDOW: The Directory Window is a menu listing the sub directories and files in the current drive and directory. It is called a window so it will not be confused with the Pull Down Directory Menu. The directory list defaults to alphabetical order with directories listed first, then filenames. This may be changed using the View Menu. To move through the list, press a letter which will move the cursor to each successive occurrence of a listing, beginning with that letter. Use [HOME] to go to the top of the list and [END] to go to the bottom. Up and Down arrows move from file to file, and the PGUP and PGDN move a screen at a time. To display a different directory, press [ENTER] when the directory name is selected. Use [CTRL A,B,C] or another drive letter to change drives. To run an executable file, press [ENTER] when the filename is highlighted with the selection bar. Press [ENTER] on "Previous" to go back a directory. STATUS WINDOWS: Located to the right of your screen, two windows appear. The first displays the current date and time. The next displays the current disk status. Each time a function occurs that changes one of these items, they will be updated automatically. Also, a Disk Drive Status window appears at the top left/middle of the screen. This displays the disk drive letters available on this computer. For information on disk status refer to Status Windows under the View Menu. HELP: A context sensitive Help Window can be accessed by pressing [F10] or clicking the mouse on the HELP button at the top right hand corner of the screen. Scroll through this file by using the up and down arrow keys, or PgUp and PgDn. Use the right or left arrow keys to move the Help Window from side to side on the screen. The next time HELP is used, the window will appear in the same place. The placement is not defaulted. [HOME] and [END] also work in this window to view help on other items. Help may not be accessed from Error Windows, the Equipment Window, the Display Extensions, of the "Save Configuration" options. DOS MASTER - SCREEN DISPLAY (continued) MENUS: In a menu, the cursor will flash at the position of the Selection Bar. This is the current highlighted selection. Press [ENTER] to execute this option or [ESC] to close this menu. If a "MORE" prompt appears at the bottom right to the menu, there are more options in the direction of the arrow. Use the appropriate arrow key or click the left mouse button on the "MORE" prompt. This will scroll the menu allowing you to see the rest of the options available. You may use the [PgUp], [PgDn], [HOME], and [END] keys for faster movement. The first letter of an option will move the Selection Bar to that option. If there is a Block to the left of an option when a menu is opened, then that is the current selection. Only one option in this type of menu may be selected at any one time. Press the [ENTER] key to select a new option. In the Directory Window (a menu), Status Menu, and Attributes Menu you may use the [+] key to select all options, the [-] key to unselect all options, or the [*] key to invert the options. WINDOWS: In a window a field or fields will appear with OK and CANCEL prompts. OK is simply an [ENTER] key and CANCEL is an [ESC] key. The Left Mouse Button may be used on either of these prompts. When there is not a field in a window, such as Error Windows, the Equipment Window, and the Display Extensions Window, help is not available. You must return to a Menu or a window with fields in it to view the Help File. The Colors Window, View File(s) Window, and the Undelete Status Windows are exceptions to this rule. In windows with two fields, the mouse, the up and down arrows, the tab key or the enter key may be used to move between fields. For movement in a field, refer to fields below. In a Question Window, you may use [Y] or [N] for Ok and CANCEL. FIELDS: Movement in a field is very simple. Use the arrow keys or move from right to left, or the home and end keys to go from beginning to the end of the field. [Ctrl End] deletes all characters to the right of the cursor. [INSERT] and [DELETE] are also available. The mouse may be used to move to any point in the field, and you may press the "Scrolling Arrow Prompts" to scroll the field. DOS MASTER - MOUSE SUPPORT If you have a mouse with your system, the mouse driver must be loaded before executing DOS Master. You cannot load your mouse driver from the "Run a DOS Command" Option. DOS Master may be used with Microsoft and Logitech compatible mouse products. Once a mouse driver is installed, DOS Master will place the mouse cursor, a block in text mode and an arrow in graphics mode, in the center of the screen. The left mouse button is used as the [ENTER] key or [OK] mouse button. You may point to any mouse button or to any option in a menu or window. Single click this button to move to an option or field. Double click this button to run this option. The right mouse button is used as an [ESC] or [CANCEL]. You do not need to be on a mouse prompt when clicking the right button. This is used for closing the current window or menu. The Right Mouse Button may be pressed from the directory window to open the "Quit the Shell" window. Next press the [OK] prompt with the left mouse button to "Quit the Shell". You may click the Left Mouse Button on a [CANCEL] prompt and it will cancel. Do not confuse this with the Right Mouse Button. This will act the same as if you had clicked the Right Mouse Button. The Middle Mouse Button on a three button mouse, or both buttons on a two button mouse, will act the same as the SPACE BAR. This will select options in menus. You DO NOT have to be on the selection bar when using this button. The file or option in which the selection bar is highlighting will be selected or unselected. The following are the available Mouse Prompts in DOS Master: HELP, OK, CANCEL, NEXT, MORE, MOVE, and small arrows that appear in fields and windows. The mouse may also be used to change back and forth between fields. DOS MASTER - CONTROL MENU RUN A DOS COMMAND: This is a DOS shell allowing commands to be executed from the DOS prompt. Use this window as if it were the DOS prompt. It will scroll when it needs to. Use the following field keys when moving in a scrolling field: [HOME], [END], [CTRL END], and the left and right arrows. Press [ENTER] to execute this command. When this field is left blank, you will be taken to the DOS prompt. Type EXIT to return to the DOS Master. If the "Load Prompt" is on, the message "Press Any Key to Continue" will appear after the command is executed. Press a key or the Right Mouse Button and you will return to DOS Master. This is used when running commands that leave a display on the screen which you might want to see. For example, the command CHKDSK displays information on the screen which is useful. If the "Load Prompt" is off, it will automatically return to DOS Master, and you will miss seeing this information. "Run a DOS Command" is also affected by the Load Priority. LOAD PRIORITY: The "Leave in Memory" option will keep the DOS Master resident as other applications are executed. This is helpful when running simple disk maintenance tasks with a quick return to the DOS Master. This should only be used on machines with 640K or more. "Flush from Memory" will flush the DOS Master from memory while the chosen application is executed. This is best used when running a large program. DOS Master only takes up 13K RAM when this option is chosen. LOAD PROMPT: When returning to DOS Master, a prompt will appear, "Press any key to continue". This is if you want to see what might be displayed on the screen before returning to the DOS Master. When running other applications, you may want to turn this off so you do not have to press a key every time you return to DOS Master. All options returning to DOS Master will be affected. This option may be saved. (See "Save Configuration" for details.) DOS MASTER - CONTROL MENU (continued) SCREEN COLORS: Screen Colors allows the operator to customize the colors displayed on the screen. All display boxes, except the box shadows (which are always black), may be altered. Select the window or menu you wish to change from the menu. On the color palette an X will select the present color scheme. The scheme will also appear in the top of the box which contains the name of the selected menu or window. The color of the X of block is the foreground color and the background is the background color. Move the X with the arrow keys or select an option with the mouse. Press [ENTER] to use the new selected colors, or [ESC] to cancel. The entire screen will be redrawn, and you will return to the Main Menu. This option may be saved. (See " Save Configuration" for details.) SCREEN MODES: Screen Modes is used for expanding the number of lines which display on the screen. The DOS Master makes room for more files and directories to appear in the Directory Window and allows more lines to be seen in the View File(s) Option. The following modes are available for each monitor: MONITOR/CARD COMBINATION MODE MONOCHROME: - B&W Text (25 lines) CGA W/COMPOSITE MONITOR OR LCD: - B&W Text (25 lines) - B&W Graphics (33 lines) CGA W/CGA MONITOR OR MCGA: - Color Text (25 lines) - B&W Graphics (33 lines) EGA CARD W/MONOCHROME MONITOR: - B&W Text (25 lines) - B&W Graphics (58 lines) EGA CARD W/CGA MONITOR: - Color Text (25 lines) - Color Graphics (33 lines) EGA CARD W/EGA MONITOR: - Color Text (25 lines) - Color Text (43 lines) - Color Graphics (43 lines) - Color Graphics (58 lines) VGA COLOR OR MONOCHROME MONITOR: - Color Text (25 lines) - Color Text (28 lines) - Color Text (50 lines) - Color Graphics (43 lines) - Color Graphics (60 lines) DOS MASTER - CONTROL MENU (continued) When using a black and white monitor with color graphics cards and for those with LCD (laptop display) monitors, you should change to the graphics mode this is black and white only and will be entirely visible on these monitors. If you have any other monitor card combination, the closest combination listed above will be used. This option may be saved. (See "Save Configuration" for details.) EQUIPMENT WINDOW: The Equipment Window displays additional information about your machine that does not change unless your hardware changes. This shows all of your Communications Ports (printers, modems, etc.), Disk Drives (Floppy and Hard), your machine's Base Memory (RAM), your monitor and monitor card combination, if you have a mouse installed, and the DOS version number. SAVE CONFIGURATION: "Save Configuration" allows you to change all of the options listed to your specific needs and to save them so that each time you enter DOS Master the options you have chosen will be restored. The following options may be saved: Load Priority, Load Prompt, Parameters Window, Screen Colors, Screen Modes, Directory Format, Sort Directory, Files Displayed, Hidden Files, Status Window, Programs Menu, and Extensions. The changes will be saved to disk in a configuration file named MASTER.CNF. This file may be edited with any text editor. The default modes are easily read and can be changed to suit your needs. View this file from "View a File" option to see more about the way each option is saved. This file in not required. If it is not present, DOS Master will display its own default options. If the file is not present, it will be created. This file will be written in the directory where MASTER.EXE is located. You do not have to default to this directory before saving if it is in your path. QUIT THE SHELL: To exit back to DOS from DOS Master, select the Quit the Shell option and press [ENTER], or press [ESC] from the Directory Window and press [ENTER] from the Quit Window. DOS MASTER - VIEW MENU DIRECTORY FORMAT: "Directory Format" changes the display of filenames, affecting the number of files which can be seen on the screen at one time. The selected option is the format of the current Directory Window. "Files and Information" will display filenames with their sizes, date and time. The other option "File Names Only", will display only the file names. Select the option you wish and press [ENTER]. This option may be saved. (See "Save Configuration" for details.) SORT DIRECTORY: "Sort Directory" allows sorting of the files alphabetically by filename or extension, by date and time, by size in ascending or descending order, or in unsorted order (DOS order). Select the option you wish and press [ENTER]. This option may be saved. (See "Save Configuration" for details.) HIDDEN FILES: The option "No Hidden Files" will hide from display any file with a hidden attribute. The option "Display Hidden Files" will display hidden files and directories in the current directory. They will be marked with an H in the Directory Window. All of the options in the FILE MENU and DIRECTORY MENU will be affected by this option. When the hidden files option is on, if you MOVE *.* to B: then that will include all of the hidden files. If it is off, it will not move hidden files. This option may be saved. (See "Save Configuration" for details.) STATUS WINDOWS: Status Windows allows you to display additional windows with helpful information on the screen. Unlike all other Sub Menus, use the [SPACEBAR] to toggle the options on or off or use the [+], [-], or [*] keys in this menu. Press [ENTER] to display the new setting or [ESC] to cancel the changes. Time and Date displays the current time and date in a window at the top right of the screen. The Disk Status Window displays the Disk Label or Name, the total amount of disk space, the amount of disk space available, the current directories total space used, the number of selected files, and the total amount of space used by the selected files. The ladder is convenient for determining if a certain selection of files will fit on a diskette. If it is close, it may not fit because of the slack space on different drives. The Drive window displays mouse prompts in a window above the Directory Window. This is very useful for systems with a mouse to easily change drives. This option may be saved. (See "Save Configuration" for details.) DOS MASTER - DIRECTORY MENU DIRECTORY TREE: Directory Tree creates a graphic representation of the current drive's tree structure. The Arrows, [PgUp], [PgDn], [HOME], and [END] will move the cursor. The [ENTER] key will default to that directory; [ESC] will cancel the display. [CTRL A,B,C] will display the tree of another drive and [ENTER] will change to that drive and directory. CHANGE DIRECTORY: "Change Directory" makes a default change to the specified drive and directory. Type a valid pathname, for example, C:\DOS\UTIL or A:\DATA. MAKE A DIRECTORY: "Make Directory" will create a directory where specified. If you choose not to fill in a complete pathname, the new directory will be added to the current directory. Use DOS conventions. COPY A DIRECTORY TREE: "Copy Directory Tree" will allow you to copy full directories or directory structures on the same drive or even across drives. If the target directory tree is already present, the source will COPY OVER what was there. You may not copy root directories. MOVE A DIRECTORY TREE: "Move Directory Tree" will allow you to move full directories or directory structures on the same drive or even across drives. If the target directory tree is already present, it will not be moved. You must use the "Copy" option. You may not move root directories or current directories. RENAME A DIRECTORY: "Rename Directory" will rename a directory title. You must be using DOS 3.0 or greater to use this option. Enter the pathname of the directory in the Rename field. If the selection bar in the Directory Window is on a directory, it will be entered in the window for you. You may press [CTRL END] to clear this field or overwrite this entry. Enter the new title in the TO field. The same pathname must be entered in both fields. You may NOT rename the current directory, a subdirectory which you are in, or a current directory of another diskette. DOS MASTER - DIRECTORY MENU (continued) DELETE A DIRECTORY: "Delete Directory" will delete a directory entry. If there are files or sub directories in this directory, a window will open asking if you wish to delete all of these files and sub directories. Press [ESC] or [N] if you choose not to delete this directory tree. Press [ENTER] or [Y] to accept. If the directory specified is empty, it will simply remove this directory. If the selection bar in the Directory Window is on a directory, it will be entered in the window for you. You may press [CTRL END] to clear this field or overwrite this entry. You may delete all of the files in one directory by using the "Delete File(s)" option. UNDELETE A DIRECTORY: "Undelete Directory" will undelete the directory entered if this section of the drive has not been overwritten. Enter the pathname where the directory has been deleted. If a Directory Not Found error window appears, there are no undeleted directories in this path. Press [CTRL N] until you find the directory name you wish to undelete. The status must say "Available" for this directory to be undeleted. If the directory you are looking for does not appear before the "No More Directories Found" error window opens, then it has also already been overwritten. Press [ENTER] when you find the directory to be undeleted. The first letter of the directory entry is missing. Enter it here in this window. Then press [ENTER] and your directory will be restored. The files and sub directories below must now be undeleted but also might not be available. DIRECTORY ATTRIBUTES: "Directory Attributes" allows the hiding or displaying of directories. Fill in a pathname and press [ENTER]. Then select either "Unhide Directory" or "Hide Directory" and press [ENTER]. Press [ESC] to cancel. Root directories may not be hidden. COPY FILE(S): "Copy File(s)" allows the operator to copy files from one place to another. The file currently selected in the Directory Window will be entered as the file to copy. The operator is able to fill in the name(s) of the file(s) to be copied. If you have chosen specific files (see Select Files), the words "Selected Files" will appear in the Copy field. DOS Master will copy all designated files in the current directory. The target is any available drive and path or the current directory. All DOS conventions concerning filenames and duplication of files are supported. DOS MASTER - FILE MENU MOVE FILE(S): "The Move File(s)" option will move file(s) from one place to another. This saves time spent in copying and deleting files. The "Selected Files" feature is in operation in this command. All DOS conventions are supported. RENAME FILE(S): The file currently selected in the Directory Window will be automatically entered as the file to rename. Fill in or overwrite the filename. If you have designated specific files (see "Select Files"), the words "Selected Files" will appear in the "Rename" field. All DOS conventions are supported. In this option, the source and target filespecs must include the complete path unless the file is in the current directory. Save time by defaulting to the directory containing the source file. DELETE FILE(S): "Delete File(s)" deletes those files selected (see "Select Files") or typed in as a filespec. When a "Selected Files" or global wildcard (* or ?) is used, an "Are You Sure" window will appear. Press [ENTER] or [Y] (Ok), or [ESC] or [N] (Cancel) to respond. A pathname may be entered here and *.* will be assumed. For example: C:\WORK will delete all of the files in the work directory or C:\WORK\*.*. UNDELETE FILE(S): Enter the pathname where the file(s) you wish to undelete are located. If a "File Not Found" error window appears, there are no undeleted files in this path. Press [CTRL N] until you find the file name you wish to undelete. The Status must say "Available" for this file to be undeleted. If the file you are looking for does not appear before the "No More Files Found" error window opens, then it has already been overwritten. Press [ENTER] when you find the file to be undeleted. The first letter of the filename is missing. Enter it here in this window. Then press [ENTER] and your file may be restored. There is a good chance files will be restored if nothing has been saved on this diskette since the file was deleted. You should now "View" this file to make sure it is entirely the same as it was. Undeleted files may seen alright, but the contents can be part of anther file if the file was not undeleted right away. DOS MASTER - FILE MENU (continued) VIEW FILE(S): "View File(s)" will View the contents of files in ASCII or Hexadecimal format. Enter the pathname and filespec of the file(s) you wish to view, then select ASCII or Hexadecimal from the menu. Non-ASCII files viewed in ASCII format will look unusual with lots of funny characters. If an error window appears saying there is no EOF marker in this file, the file is most likely not in ASCII format. These files must be viewed in Hexadecimal. If "Selected Files" or a "Global" is specified, the files will be viewed in the order they appear on the disk. Press [ENTER] to display the next file and [ESC] to drop out of the global loop. PRINT FILE(S): "Print File(s)" will print the files entered to parallel port number one (LPT1:). If you wish to send to a different port, redirect the output by running a DOS command. For example: MODE LPT1=COM1:9600,N,8,1 SELECT FILE(S): "Select File(s)" allows the preselection of files in the current directory to be manipulated as a group. This is great for copying or deleting groups of files which are dissimilar in their filenames. The [SPACEBAR] toggles the square [ON]/[OFF] indicator on individual files. Additionally, the plus [+] key will select all the files while the minus [-] key will unselect all the files listed. The [*] key will reverse the selections or unselect the selected files and select the unselected files. This option marks only files in the current directory. When files are selected, other "File" options will have the term "Selected Files" automatically entered into the entry window. If necessary, the term "Selected Files" can be entered by the operator. The number of files selected and total size of all selected files is displayed in the Disk Status Window. This may be used to see if a certain number of files may fit onto another diskette. SEARCH FOR FILE(S): "Search for File(s)" is handy if you have lost track of a file. Type in a filespec matching the files you wish to find. In succession, each matched filename will be displayed in a window with its entire file pathname. The displayed filename may be edited for further search. Use [CTRL N] to move forward through the list of files that match what you are looking for until you find the one you are looking for. Press [ENTER] on that filename to make its directory the default and the file selected with the block in front of it. When subdirectories are specified, the search will only take place in the subdirectories listed below the one specified. DOS MASTER - FILE MENU (continued) FILE ATTRIBUTES: "File Attributes" allows changes to the file attributes of one or a group of files (see "Select Files"). The changes supported are Read Only, Hidden, System, and Archive. Use the [SPACE BAR] to select and unselect the attributes you wish to use, or [+], [-], or [*], then press [ENTER] to change these attributes, or [ESC] to cancel. Be careful using globals. Make sure you check to see if there are any hidden files before changing everything. PROGRAMS MENU MODIFY PROGRAMS: This is a hard drive menuing system in a pull down menu. This option allows you to enter your own personal applications into this menu. "Select Modify Programs" to add, delete, or edit an option. Enter the title of the menu, which will appear in the Programs Menu. Then enter the pathname and filename of the file you wish it to execute. DOS Master will change to the given drive and path before executing the selected program. Use the [CTRL LEFT] and [CTRL RIGHT] keys in the Programs Menu to move an option up or down in the menu. You may enter the word ALL in the delete option to delete all entries. You may change the title and the filename in the edit option. MAKE SURE YOU "SAVE CONFIGURATION" AFTER MODIFYING THIS MENU. MODIFY EXTENSIONS: Selecting the "Modify Extensions" option from the Programs Menu allows you to assign a file extension to an application. This will allow you to press the [ENTER] key on files other than executable ones (.EXE, .COM, .BAT), which means you may press enter on any file extension you create. For example: Select "Add an Extension", Enter "WP" in the Extension field and "C:\WP51\WP [FILE]" in the File field. Now, when you execute any file with the extension it is .WP, you will directly go into Wordperfect with your file already loaded. You may enter "ALL" as an extension to delete all of the current extensions. "Edit" will allow you to change the extension and the filename. "Display" Extensions will simply open a window with all of the current extensions and their pathnames. You need to use the [FILE] command in the File field in order to place your filename after the command so your editor knows which file to load. The maximum number of extensions is twenty. If your application needs to open data files, make sure they are in your PATH. See your DOS manual for explanation of the PATH command. REMEMBER TO "SAVE CONFIGURATION" AFTER ENTERING YOUR PROGRAMS AND EXTENSIONS. Otherwise, when you run one, it will not be there when you come back to the DOS Master.
