8.2 Selecting 8.2.1 Overview The 'seLect' button on the List screen remains depressed when clicked, meaning you are "select mode" (click again or type L to release). Note that some functions, such as Sort, are disabled while in select mode: all you get is a "beep". Select lets you operate on GROUPS of records from the current List. When it is depressed, you can PgUp/PgDn, etc, through the List, clicking records once to highlight them; again to select; and once more to DE-select. (If keyboarding, use Tab or arrow keys, and ) Selected records are marked by an arrowhead to the left of the relevant List display line. ---------------------------------------------------------- NB: Records do not STAY selected after button is released. ---------------------------------------------------------- There are several buttons on the List screen which perform operations on a group of records selected in that way, namely 'Include' thru 'Paste'. These are explained below. But first... 8.2.2 The Select Sub-Menu When the 'seLect' button is clicked, a sub-menu appears: five vertical buttons enclosed by a square cyan bracket. The bracket indicates which List commands apply ONLY to seLected records, and the buttons are there to make life easier. Selecting records individually can get tedious. Button Label/Equivalent Key Function ------------ -------------- ----------------------------- < < - select this page * ð (ASCII 240/F0h) = - select a set of pages * ä (ASCII 228/E4h) Z - select entire List * # # - report total selected U U - jUmp to highlighted record (for viewing) * - NOT IN FREEWARE VERSION If you click the second button or type = a dialog box appears asking you to give a SET of pages by page number. Enter two numbers within the allowable range (stated). U (jUmp) lets you check records in detail and move about, but all update functions, Exec, and so forth are disabled while you are seLect mode. To recover these functions you must return to the List and release the 'seLect' button. ---------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: RE-selecting any record that is ALREADY selected DE-selects it (seLect is a toggle switch). This means, instead of selecting 14 records on one page individually, you can select the whole page, then DEselect two! ---------------------------------------------------------- 8.2.3 Include With records selected, click Include or type I to drop (from the LIST only, NOT the database) all items NOT selected. Include ignores the current record. In other words, the current record remains in the List whether selected or not. 8.2.4 Exclude With records selected, click eXclude or type X to drop (from the LIST only, NOT the database) all items SELECTED. eXclude ignores the current record. In other words, the current record remains in the List whether selected or not. 8.2.5 Redate With records selected, click Redate or type R to alter the date of all currently selected items (to a date you specify). This pops up a dialog box and puts you into edit mode, to enter a date. There is thus no 'Cancel' button: just hit Esc. If you hit after inputting a Year, or click anytime, anywhere, then assuming the date you entered is valid, all selected items will be modified - fast. ---------------------------------------------------------- You can interrupt this but you will have to be very quick. Just click or hit any key. ---------------------------------------------------------- The whole date can be "nul" (nothing). And you can enter a nul year alongside a valid day/month (or month/day). (The date format is as specified in the DateStyle= line of your BLUEBOOK.INI file.) 8.2.6 Delete With records selected, click Delete or type D to delete all currently selected records. You ARE requested to confirm this! ---------------------------------------------------------- VERY IMPORTANT: You are DELETING records from the DATABASE - NOT excluding from the List. Be careful. You can interrupt this but you will have to be very quick. Just click or hit any key. ---------------------------------------------------------- This 'bulk delete' ignores the current record: to delete that you must return to the Main screen and click 'Del'. (A bit annoying but logically necessary, unfortunately.)
