8.4 Trans (NOT IN FREEWARE VERSION) Trans copies/moves records from one database to another, as BlueBook RECORDS (not text, like Export). It gives you flexibility as to how you organise your data, and the power to change your mind. Effectively, it is EIGHT different commands in one, the effect varying according to circumstances as follows: +----------- All records selected (X) or only some (-) | +-------- Destination database exists (X) or new (-) | | +----- Source records to be deleted (X) or not (-) | | | | | | is equivalent to: X X X MERGE databases X X - EXTEND target database: all records X - X * RENAME database X - - ** COPY all source records - X X TRANSFER selected records - X - EXTEND target database: some records - - X SPLIT database - - - COPY some source records * Only truly equivalent to a Rename if the remaining undeleted current record is manually deleted after the Transfer, allowing the database to be automatically erased by BlueBook. Use the DOS "ren" command instead. ** The DOS "copy" command is more efficient! ---------------------------------------------------------- Trans does not carry over any "deleted" records still occupying space. It is as though the output has been run through the BBTrim utility. ---------------------------------------------------------- Very simple to use. With records selected, click Trans on the List screen or type T. The dialog box that pops up requires you to enter a database path and name (only - no extension), and decide whether you want the currently selected records copied or moved. A MOVE is a copy followed by a delete. If you want a move, 'X' the "Delete Source Records?" check box. Otherwise leave it unchecked. (You are given a second chance to confirm deletion after the copy part of the transfer has been done.) ---------------------------------------------------------- You can't Trans to the same database, or any other that is currently open/in use. The target database does not have to exist, though. It will be created if necessary. ---------------------------------------------------------- Click Edit/type E to enter your target database, eg: C:\Letters\Taxman (NOT "C:\Letters\Taxman.BBL") Hit or F2 or click to finish editing (or hit Esc). Out of edit mode, click the check box or hit to toggle the "Delete Source Records?" check box. Then click 'Transfer' or type T.
