Who We Are

Whole Foods Market is a national chain of natural food supermarkets,
with 40 stores in ten states. We opened our first store in 1980 in
Austin, Texas. That store was recently replaced by a larger facility,
which also houses our Central Support offices. You'll find our
supermarkets operating under five names: Whole Foods Market, Unicorn
Village, Wellspring Grocery, Bread & Circus, and Mrs. Gooch's. Those
last four companies, all pioneers in large-format natural-food sales,
are now part of the Whole Foods Market family.

Quality Standards 

 * We promote foods that are free of artificial flavors and colors,
   artificial sweeteners, and synthetic preservatives.

 * We actively seek and support sources of organically grown foods.

 * We sell only grains and grain products that have not been bleached or
   bromated.

 * We do not sell food that has been irradiated.

 * We feature seafood, meat, and poultry free of added growth hormones,
   stimulants, antibiotics, sodium nitrate, and other chemicals.

 * We sell only household and personal care products that have been
   proven safe through non-animal testing methods.

Mission Statement

Since our first store opened in 1980, Whole Foods Market has strived to
establish a better way of doing business. In today's economic climate,
corporations are often seen as ruthless, inhuman entities, focusing on
their bottom lines, with complete disregard for other concerns. Like any
other business, Whole Foods exists to make a profit. But, we also see
our Company as part of a larger community whose welfare and long-term
survival are irretrievably linked to ours.
