Guide to the Excel and Lotus Filter This filter lets you import files from Excel 4.0 and 5.0 for Macintosh and Windows and from Lotus 1-2-3 4.0 for Windows into a PageMaker 5.0 (Windows) publication. INSTALLING THE FILTER To install the filter, copy the filter file into the Filters subdirectory. The location of the Filters subdirectory depends on which language version of PageMaker you installed, and whether you installed PageMaker on a local hard drive or on a network server. If PageMaker is installed on a local hard drive... 1. Exit PageMaker. 2. Copy the filter file ssflt.flt into the Filters subdirectory. Depending on which language version of PageMaker you installed, the Filters subdirectory is located in the Aldus\USEnglsh subdirectory, or in the Aldus\UKEnglsh subdirectory. 3. Restart PageMaker. If PageMaker is installed on a network server... 1. Exit PageMaker. 2. Copy the filter file ssflt.flt into the Filters subdirectory. Depending on which language version of PageMaker you installed, the Filters subdirectory is located in the NetAldus\USEnglsh subdirectory, or in the NetAldus\UKEnglsh subdirectory. 3. Restart PageMaker. For information about installing PageMaker filters and other components on other network configurations, fax yourself the FAXYI document #315415 by calling Adobe FAXYI at 206-628- 5737. Excel/Lotus Filter and OLE Files In addition to the Excel/Lotus filter file (WD6IMP.FLT), certain other files are required for the filter to function when importing Excel files. If you have MS Word 6.0 or Excel 5.0 installed, these files are already installed. If you don't have MS Word 6.0 or Excel 5.0 installed and the following files are not present on your hard drive, download the file WD6OLE.ZIP (which contains the files), and copy them to the Windows\System subdirectory: COMPOBJ.DLL OLE2.DLL OLE2.REG OLE2CONV.DLL OLE2DISP.DLL OLE2NLS.DLL OLE2PROX.DLL STDOLE.TLB STORAGE.DLL TYPELIB.DLL If these files are not present in your Windows\System subdirectory, an error message appears when you try to place an Excel 4.0 or 5.0 file into PageMaker or when the filter is initiated by PageMaker (such as copying and pasting from an Excel file). USING THE FILTER Before you import an Excel file, it is recommended that you apply the "AutoFit Selection" to all cells; otherwise, some data may not be imported correctly. To import an Excel or Lotus 1-2-3 file into PageMaker 5.0, select the "Place..." command from PageMaker's File menu and choose a file. PageMaker lists Excel files with the .XLS extension and Lotus 1-2-3 files with the .WK4 extension. If you want to import an Excel or Lotus 1-2-3 file that has a different extension, select "All Files" in the "List Files of Type:" list box, then choose the file. PageMaker prompts you for the filter type. After you choose a file, a dialog box appears that lets you choose various options: The dialog box lets you import a specific sheet from the selected file, and lets you specify the sheet's cell range and tab override (tab alignment). The default cell range and tab alignment are those of the data in the entire selected sheet. If you choose Decimal as the tab alignment, you can also choose the number of decimal places (the default is 3). You can also choose to apply the selected sheet's default style to the imported file by checking "Apply default spreadsheet style." If you want to truncate data at each cell's boundary, check "Truncate at cell boundary."
