Here at CAT, it was a VERY slow summer. In the beginning of June, we announced our current video project to help gay, lesbian and bisexual (GLB) teens develop self-esteem and to prevent suicides. Being new to the issue, we mistakenly assumed the GLB community would rally around a common cause: GLB youth. We have since learned about the fear of many GLB adults (potential supporters). Many adults feel they've been hurt and unfairly accused of being child molesters who recruit youngsters into the "homosexual lifestyle." Obviously these accusations are false. We will stick by our plan to produce the video, as well as provide factual, honest and age appropriate information for GLB youth through this newsletter and our Web site. Since June 5, we have received only $150 in donations. Our phone bill for June was $250!!! It is clear we can not continue to operate with this lack of financial support. This project is in serious danger of failing... We are an all-volunteer non-profit organization, including the administration. Claude DiDomenica, the President of CAT recently said, "You know you run a progressive non-profit when the only food in the house is food for the cat..." Many people have complemented us on our newsletter and the CAT Web site. They enjoy the original articles and information. Recently, Bessie Hadley our Executive Director, spoke with a potential supporter who said, "I saw your newsletter on America On-line." The word is getting out and the emotional support, if NOT the financial support, is there. Another hurdle we face is that we are not a direct service organization. We don't feed the homeless. It is easy to be charitable when you can see the face of a starving child. Our goal for long term prevention and education is a contribution just as important as providing shelter for the homeless. Any project to encourage self-esteem in today's youth is a worthwhile project. Preventing the suicide of a GLB teenager should be just as important... The hearing is being billed as a hearing on "Parental Involvement in Social Issues in Education." These products can be toxic. They should be kept in their original, labeled containers and behind cabinet doors with child-resistant latches. 2) Keep medications away from children. Install a lock or child-resistant latch on medicine cabinets. Buy medicines with child-resistant packaging. Do not give your children any medication without first consulting a physician. Have a bottle of syrup of ipecac handy to induce vomiting, but use only if advised by the Poison Control Center or a physician. 3) Know the sources of carbon monoxide - a poisonous gas with NO smell. Carbon monoxide sources in your home include: * room heaters, furnaces and water heaters * charcoal grills, ranges and fireplaces * a car running idle inside a garage Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include dizziness, fatigue, headache, nausea, and irregular breathing. A carbon monoxide detector can be a life-saving device for your home. 4) Know your plants! Many plants are poisonous if ingested. Remove toxic plants from your home or put in an unreachable area. Remember to keep them away from children and pets. 5) Keep the phone number to the Poison Control Center listed by the telephone for quick reference. Most areas have this number listed in the front of the telephone book. If you can't find the number for your area, the National Poison Control Center phone number is: 1-800-498-8666. As you read this information, you may be thinking, "I already know all this." But you never know when an emergency might arise. You'd be surprised how many times that simple things were overlooked and resulted in tragedy. You CAN be prepared to protect your children against these common household poisons. Our President, Claude DiDomenica will be writing a weekly column to stimulate the minds of our youth and adults who haven't lost their "youthful imaginations..." What if there was no longer was any prejudice??? First of all, I probably wouldn't be writing this column in our newsletter, because our world's problem with diversity is what sparked the conception of CAT. No CAT equals no CAT Chronicle! Perhaps people would be focusing on cleaning up our environment, space exploration and the arts... On a personal note, I am a jazz composer and guitarist. I really would like to return to my previous "selfish existence" of playing my guitar and writing music. However, my conscience won't permit that unless for some reason we fail and have to give up CAT. For some time now I have been crying out to anybody that would listen about CAT's lack of financial support. So far, nobody has responded...
