I've got tons of excuses, but let's go on to something more interesting... First of all, the changes in the WWW page are coming slower than I had planned.... I'm still trying to settle into the whole schoolwork routine again, and have had some difficulty, uh, "allocating time". The WWW page _will_ be updated, ASAP. The elections are in full swing now. The five positions in the Comic Book Net Administration Team should be filled within the next month or so. If you aren't in CBN now, it's a great time to log on to one of the BBS's listed at the end of this E-Mag and join up... let your vote be counted! There are, I believe 8 or 9 people running for the positions right now, including the incumbants (see the e-mag's masthead). There has been a lot of discussion this week on the Net, so much that it would be very difficult for me to summarize a lot of it. Top Tens (a long-standing tradition carried over from the days before the "Great Merger" of 4ColorNet and The Comic Book Net) have started again. Post your favorites now! :) Well, on with the issue. This is a good one, well worth the wait! Best, --Ry Editor The Comic Book Net E-Mag Xenozoid@cris.com ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [2] CSNsider #432 by W. Batty and C. Biggers This is the CSNsider from CSN #432, which will be in shops on 9/28/95. It is reproduced in its entirety with the expressed permission of COMIC SHOP NEWS! In November, as a part of their anniversary celebration, Tekno will ship all of their new books polybagged with free back issues, including some of their gold-plate signature comics... Frank Miller is supplying the cover art for the alternate cover for Prophet #2, which should be on sale at about the time you read this... When Kenner's Superman toy line appears later this year, keep an eye open for the special collector's edition two-packs featuring new Superman figures paired with the likes of Metallo, Doomsday, and (this one'll certainly be a hard one to find) Batman... Overstreet's Fan Magazine will add Elementals and Lady Rawhide serials to its pages beginning with the seventh issue... Crow fans won't want to miss Inteleg's Crow Vinyl Kit, a very accurate rendition of Brandon Lee's cinematic interpretation of the James O'Barr character... Antarctic Comics will launch a funny-animal miniseries version of one of their most popular titles in January with the release of Furry Ninja High School: Puppy Love #1... Little Lulu comes to television this fall in six half-hour program produced for HBO; Tracey Ullman is supplying the voice for Lulu, and Cinar (the animation company producing the series) is hoping that they can generate enough interest to produce another twenty episodes for syndication... Bruce Jones and Bret Blevins bring together two of Edgar Rice Burroughs' best-known creations in Tarzan/John Carter: Warlords of Mars, a miniseries beginning in late '95... The exclusives continue to choose sides: Broadway Comics will launch their line of comics exclusively through Diamond Distribution and Wizard will use Diamond as its exclusive distributor beginning in December, while TSR has chosen Capital as its exclusive distributor in the comics market; of course, none of these changes should have any effect on comic readers and collectors... Monty Python & The Holy Grail is featured in an extra-wide card series that features images taken directly from a 35mm print of the film; look for it in December from Cornerstone, along with their third Doctor Who card set... League of Justice, the Elseworlds miniseries that sets DC's heroes in a grand fantasy world, has been postponed; look for it on November 30th rather than its previously-announced September release date... Casper join the Fox Kids Network in early '96, while Richie Rich returns to cartoons in animated segments tagged onto the Baby Huey cartoon series later this year, paving the way for his own Richie Rich series next year; Harvey also hopes to bring back other characters, including Little Audrey, Spooky, Hot Stuff, and Wendy the Good Little Witch (and if cartoons are coming up, you can be sure that comics aren't far behind)... Ghost meets The Shadow this December in an offbeat one-shot from Dark Horse... Terry Austin and Chris Sprouse will adapt the hard-to-find Alan Dean Foster novel Star Wars: Splinter of the Mind's Eye in a four-issue limited series beginning in December... Frank Miller and Simon Bisley are currently producing a serialized sf comics story, Bad Boy, for the British edition of GQ magazine; plans are in the works to bring the story to American comic shops once it completes its British run... CSN #432 features Homelands from Acclaim Comics on the cover as well as more news and the CSN Checklist -- the only monthly checklist that covers every publisher! Industry News ----------------------------------------------------- Smith, Waid and Strazewski Interviewed in Hero: 9/1/95 - In a recent interview on the online comics e-mag, Hero Illustrated (http://www.nuke.com), Battlin' Beau Smith (Guy Gardner: Warrior), Mark Waid (Captain America, Flash, Impulse), and Len Strazewski (Prime) got together with interviewer Steve Darnall to discuss comics and writing. In the interview, Strazewski mentioned that he has sent a few stories out to the science-fiction magazines, and Smith mentioned that he has a Space Ranger proposal in with DC now. Groo Stops Wandering: 9/15/95 - Groo: The Wanderer, from Image Comics, will cease publishing with issue #12. Creators Mark Evanier and Sergio Aragones have ideas for other characters that they're shopping around to other publishers. Additionally, Groo's dog Rufferto will be featured in a miniseries sometime next year. Preiss Multimedia/MSN: 9/15/95 - Byron Preiss Multimedia's online comics venture, Virtual Comics, will be made available exclusively through the new Microsoft Network. Wizard's Bad Girls: 8/28/95 - Wizard Press will be releasing a Bad Girls of Wizard special this coming December, focusing on the Bad Girls phenomenon that has taken over the comics industry in recent years. There are two covers planned for the Bad Girls of Wizard. One will be a jam cover featuring Steven Hughes' Lady Death, Bill Tucci's Shi, and Harris' Vampirella. The second cover will feature Pamela Anderson as Barb Wire gearing up for the upcoming film. Retailers will be able to place individual orders for each edition. The Bad Girls of Wizard features will include: * A Poster featuring the artwork from the jam cover, polybagged with the special. * A Photo preview of the Barb Wire film. * How to draw Bad Girls. * Bad Girls movie casting call (Hot, hot, hot!). * Bad Girls of Manga. * A list of the top 10 Bad Girl comics. * A Day in the Life of Vampirella. * Features on all 15 of the baddest women in comics. Eddie Campbell Back From Hell (an update): 9/16/95 - Eddie Campbell, fan favorite artist and self-publisher, is currently working on Chapter 12 of From Hell, putting the finishing touches to Bacchus #7 and is just about to start #8 of that title. DC/Marvel Crossover Update!: 9/15/95 - This is an update to the DC/Marvel crossover story published in issue 2.3 of this newsletter. There will be a four-issue limited series that crosses over the two companies. Some cosmic villains are behind it all, with the end result having the heroes of the two universes having big fights. Initially will be fights such as Robin/Jubilee, Green Lantern/Silver Surfer and Catwoman/Electra. The larger fights will follow (Batman/Captain America, Superman/Hulk, Superboy/Spider-Man, Lobo/Wolverine and Wonder Woman/Storm). The winners of the fights will be selected by the fans. DC and marvel will send kits to comic shops that feature Who's Who-style entries on the major characters of the crossover and a ballot can be sent in which will decide the outcomes of the fights in the fourth issue. It was also mentioned that each company will produce a poster in support of the event. Dan Jurgens has been said to be the artist on the two DC books, with Peter David writing the two issues from Marvel. The crossover is said to have permanent repercussions as well, leaving one character from each company in the other's universe in the wake of the crossover (DC would get Captain Marvel and Marvel would get Hawkman or Green Arrow). None of this information has been confirmed. Wizard Press & Diamond Forge New Relationship: 8/31/95 - Gareb Shamus, founder and owner of Wizard Press, signed a letter of intent today with Steve Geppi, President and CEO of Diamond Comic Distributors, giving Diamond the right to distribute Wizard products to comic book specialty shops. Diamond will help Wizard provide enhanced marketing support for retailers, and Wizard has chosen to make Diamond its exclusive distributor to comic book specialty shops, effective with December-shipping products. Areala Action Figure: 9/9/95 - Ben Dunn, creator of Antarctic Press's Warrior Nun Areala, is currently producing a prototype action figure to be produced on a very limited basis. Future developments will be reported. Hero Hits the Web: 9/1/95 - Hero Illustrated has made the transition from the printed medium to the World Wide Web, launching its site as part of the critically- acclaimed Nuke online e-mag. The URL to access Nuke is http://www.nuke.com. Superman Avoids a Trip To Hell: 9/16/95 - The Alan Moore story Superman Goes to Hell, which was rejected by DC, will see print instead as Supreme Goes to Hell, to be published by Image's Extreme Comics. Following Moore's run, Neil Gaiman will then take Supreme to heaven before settling in as the regular writer for that book. The two writers were previously behind another title inspired by Superman, published by the now-defunct Eclipse comics. Jitterbug Gets Wired: 9/5/95 - Jitterbug Press now has a web site. The new web site is available to surfers at the URL http://www.jitterbug.com/. Wizard #53: 9/6/95 - Wizard: The Guide to Comics #53 will include an exclusive offer for X-Files #1/2 as well as an Ash mini-comic from Event comics by Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti. Zot! To Be Reprinted: 9/12/95 - Kitchen Sink will be doing a four-volume set, reprinting Scott McCloud's Zot!. No publication date is available yet. 2. Editorial ---------------------------------------------------------- Another Miscellaney.... * There are some changes coming to this newsletter... right now, I'm trying to settle into the routine of juggling schoolwork and stuff like this, so there may be a few more random skip weeks (like last week). But the newsletter will be around as long as the Comic Book Net is, so worry not! :) The review format will change drastically. The point system will be done away with, as the people who _did_ offer feedback mentioned that it seemed overly analytical. Oh well. I will be RE-reviewing some books in the new format as well... the new format will begin with the next issue (hopefully, next week). * I'm somewhat curious to find out who reads this newsletter... I know that it has pretty wide exposure, particularly through the Comic Book Net E-Mag, but I really don't know whether people READ it. So if you _do_ read this, and you have a way of sending me private e-mail (my Internet address is Xenozoid@cris.com, my CompuServe address is 76624,73 and my AOL address is Xenodroid), please drop me a note. You don't have to say what you think or anthing, though that'd be nice. Just mention that you read the newsletter, that's all I want to know. * I just saw the season premiere of Season 3 of Lois & Clark and found it to be... AWESOME!!! The BEST episode, bar none, of any show that I have seen on television. With one complaint.... >ahem< WHO THE @*$(^& DESIGNED LOIS'S COSTUMES??!!!??!! They are PATHETIC!!! This costume guy needs to get laid... * Yeah, pretty short miscellaney this week. Hopefully I'll find more to discuss next week. A year ago I found some old Marvel Age magazines laying around and figured it would be a kick to see what was cooking in the kitchen of the House of Ideas back then. Now, when I say old, I don't mean like 1992 or 1993.. Nope, what I found is better. It's from ten years ago. That's right, a DECADE behind us. It was fun to see how titles had changed and yet remained the same. But I grew tired of typing the stuff up month after month. Well, now we have the E-mag and it seems worthwhile again. I'm going to change it a little bit in that instead of just listing the solicitations for the comics, I'll try and hit a little of everything... So put on your DAZLER t-shirts and come back with me...... In Marvel Age #33, cover dated December 1995, but listing comics shipping in September.... KURT BUSIEK was leaving Marvel Age as Assistant Editor towrite a MADAME MASQUE limited series as well as an issue of IRON MAN... Current DC editors DENNY O'NEIL an MIKE CARLIN were writing titles like THE THING and DAREDEVIL. And speaking of DAREDEVIL, in issue #226 ol Hornhead made a decision could destroy Matt Murdock's legal career... THE WEST COAST AVENGERS fought MASTER PANDEMONIUM... THE BEYONDER became a drug addict in CLOAK AND DAGGER... THE BEYONDER crossed into THE MICRONAUTS... GROO saw his eleventh EPIC issue hit the stands... LONGSHOT's limited series was at it's 5th issue and saw the lucky fella team up with DOCTOR STRANGE... THE X-MEN were trapped in Asagard while LOKI tried to make STORM the new thunder goddess... JOHN BYRNE was writing and drawing THE INCREDIBLE HULK... THE SUB-MARINER was an Avenger... Storm battled CYCLOPS for leadership of The X-Men... ROM hit it's penultimate issue... NIGHTCRAWLER was in the middle of his own limited series... THE PUNISHER only had one title, and that was a limited series... The final chapter of PETER DAVID's "DEATH OF JEAN DEWOLFF" saga reached it's conclusion in PETER PARKER #110... SECRET WARS II was seven issues into making everyone hate crossovers... JIM SHOOTER was still EIC of Marvel... Marvel's "Top Ten" was; Secret Wars II #4, X-Men #198, West Coast Avengers #1, Alpha Flight #27, Web of Spider-Man #7, Avengers #260, The Vision and Scarlet Witch #1, Fantastic Four #283, New Mutants #32 and Daredevil #223.... Spider-Man was really the clone although we didn't know it at the time. How foolish of us all to have missed all those clues... X-FACTOR was previewed and it's "mystery fifth" member was blotted out of the preview pictures... STEVE ERWIN (I shook my head and shrugged my shoulders, too) was named the winner of the "PULSE POUNDING PENCILING CONTEST" at COMIX FAIR in Houston, Texas, in which contestants pencilled pages from THE OFFICIAL MARVEL COMICS TRY-OUT BOOK... The calendar on the back listed the following birthdays which one would assume are still valid ten years later; WALT SIMONSON - 9/2, MIKE ZECK - 9/6, ARCHIE GOODWIN - 9/8, KURT BUSIEK - 9/16, ROGER STERN - 9/17, DANNY FINGEROTH - 9/18, PETER DAVID - 9/23, BOB LAYTON - 9/25, LOUISE SIMONSON - 9/26, JIM SHOOTER - 9/27. That's it for this first installment of Marvel DEvolution.. Hope you enjoyed it. This was a real character booster for Suzie. I'll give you a couple of appetizers (my favorite part!). "Take your scaly fingers OFF me..." The Latverian Ambass. "..uh, please?" "I've HAD it with you, Grimm! That is ENOUGH!" Susie "Oh, Yeah? Says WHO?!!?" Ben "SAYS--ME!!!" Susie (Followed by a Slap to Ben's Face) At that moment, everone Gasps. The Thing rears up to his full height, and by all accounts, is truly MONSTROUS. He's held in the rage for so long-- Ever since that fateful flight all those years ago that changed him from a man to a MONSTER -- -- And Ben Grimm Wonders WHY it's taken him so long to finally let it out. Thing punches various peaces of furniture (That's me talking) The Shock waves of the blow shake the entire BUILDING. People in Stairwells cling to the railings for support...elevator passengers shriek in panic! The ceiling shatters, just INCHES from the head of the defiant INVISIBLE WOMAN... ...Then, for the SECOND time in as many seconds, everyone breathes another Collective GASP. For, in the face of this raging beast, Susan Richards has stood her Ground, and not moved an inch. "Very Impressive, Ben. After all, not just ANYBODY would be IMMATURE enough to do Thousands of dollar's worth of damage to a LAWYER'S OFFICE... we'll be litigating for MONTHS. At that, Someone lets out a nervous chuckle, but no one turns to see who it is. "I'M the leader of this team, Grimm. You do what I SAY!" For an instant, nobody moves. There's no sound except for the dust settling and the gasping breaths of the ambassador. Until... "Sure suzie. Anything you say..." If you do not get this book...I will reach across the phone lines and choke you! DO NOT MISS THIS. Can anyone say...GO SUZIE! Reported as news stories, or from creator interviews) Comics World has bit the dust. Damn shame. Carl Giles, the cartoonist for the Daily Express died this month. His "Giles" cartoons depicting a functional family dealing with the effects of news, politics and social trends have been collected into a number of books. Most famous for the character "Grandma", adopted by Dave Sim for the mother of Red Sofia, a number of new collection books are being planned for imminent release. Pamela Anderson, she of the heaving you-know-what's is off Dark Horse's Barb Wire movie. Independents Day 95 is being held at Page 45 in Nottingham the weekend after the UKCAC. Guest include Roberta Gregory, Danna Barr, Gary Spencer Millidge, Jeremy Dennis, Terry Wiley, Dave McKinnon. Oh, and I should be around too.... Saturday the 7th of October, ring them on 0115 9508045 for details. Damn Lies- (rumours from rumour columns of dealer chit-chat. Take them with as much salt as you like) Mark Gruenwald and Mike Carlin are said to be behind the mega Marvel DC crossover for February. The X-Men and Spider families won't be involved from Marvel, just the Universe and Edge characters. Only Cameo X characters will appear. The Marvel and DC Universe will be revealed to be parallel universes. Nick Fury ain't dead, he's back next year. Punisher gets Samson as a therapist and renounces killing people. Mark Millar will be bringing nack Nightmaster next year in a mini-series, after an appearance in next month's Swamp Thing. The success of Preacher has led to a mini-series next year entitled Arseface, by Ennis. The success of X-Flies Special for Twist and Shout Comics is leading to an inevitable sequel, The X-Flies Conspiracy. Rather than just a comic, it will feature conspiracy comics stories. At present, the only confirmed article is the story of Lance Guek, a contributor to Spawn who was screwed over by Todd McFarlane. Reported on the net last year, there will be new facts, stories and a Lance Guek/Todd McFarlane comicography. COMPANY NAME & ADDRESS: Dilemma Productions P O Box 803 Easthampton, Ma 01027 HISTORY: Founded in 1992 by writer/illustrator Michael Kelleher, Dilemma quickly gained recognition among small-press publishers. Dilemma began by publishing a short anthology of stories entitled "Dilemma Nights". Kelleher later moved on to create his own full length series called "Legend Killer". Legend Killer contained a back-up feature in it's second issue called "Armen Deep & Bug Boy" created by Dan Langan. Readers enjoyed this story so much, it was given its own book later 1993. With the success of Armen Deep, Dilemma produced another backup story for Legend Killer called "Project Paramount". That series was never printed however due to an last minute change in the lineup. In October of 1993 Michael Kelleher received a script submission from writer Len Mihalovich for a new series called Section 12. Kelleher was so impressed by Section 12 that he decided immediately to publish it. Section 12 replaced Project Parmount and the title of the comic was changed from "Legend Killer" to "Dilemma Presents". Kelleher felt that the Section 12 series was already to good to be used as a backup, and changed the book to an anthology so that both series would be feature stories. The reactions to Dilemma Presents #1 were overwhelmingly positive from distributors. Every major distributor had telephoned Dilemma Productions to inform them they would be picking up this new series in their October 94 catalogs. With the success of Dilemma Presents the Len Mihalovich & Michael Kelleher decided try something that had never been done before. Gathering together 30 different independent comic publishers Dilemma Productions created the Independent Universe Collector Card Set. This 90 card set was designed not only to showcase the fabulous artwork in independent comics, but also to assist the individual publishers in promoting their respective books. Response to this set was so great that a series II is scheduled for a 1996 release. Look for Dilemma Presents #3,4 in your December 95 and January 96 distributor catalogs. CURRENT TITLES: Armen Deep & Bug Boy Dilemma Presents (featuring Section 12 and Legend Killer) UPCOMING PROJECTS: Section 12 (Return of the Ferronauts), 5 issue mini-series Section 12 (color trade paperback) Independent Universe Collector Card Set (series II) THE STAFF includes: Michael Kelleher, Dan Langan, Len Mihalovich, Bill Shafer, Debbie Finney, Shawn Vermette, Bobby Hewitt, (just joining the group are the hot new illustrators) Jason Ling and Brian DeClercq ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ [8] PRESSING THE ISSUE by Ronald-Thomas Fleming Welcome to the first installment of a new column covering the world of small press comics. Each week I will present a variety of small press comics I think will be of interest to you, regardless of whether you are into small press or not. Hopefully, for the in crowd this will provide you with information you can use. For the others, it is my hope you will seek out some of these zines. As for my credentials, I have been reviewing small press for several years now. I had my own reviewzine, actually two of them, which ran for nearly two years. For over a year I have done reviews for FACTSHEET FIVE and have a regular column in WORLD OF FANDOM. So without further delay, on with the column! The Scurrilous Sex-Men #1 is now available from A.O.K. Publishing. An X-rated parody of popular silver-age superhero comics, this 32 page b&w standard-size comic book is drawn in crisp detail and is hilariously funny. $4.00 includes postage from: A.O.K. Publishing, PO Box 346, Croton, NY 10562. Mike and Lisa Weiss, one of those husband/wife duos, just released an 8-page mini, "Beware the Mucus Man" at the San Diego Con. It's one of those "true story" autobiographical comics and sells for 1 dollar ppd. from: Mike and Lisa Weiss, Box 178, Dept. BL, Milltown, NJ 08850-0178. Small press's Tim Ereneta has just released the latest issue of Oatmeal #9, his long-running mini-comic. The new issue and back issues are available for 50 cents each. His new address is: Tim Ereneta, 5 Lenox Rd, Kensington CA 94707-1330 and he can be reached via e-mail at: tim_ereneta@maillink.berkeley.edu. The Amazing Smith Brothers have made a free promo mini-comic to be given away at the San Diego Comic Con which they are now making available to the rest of the world. It features our character Moe, Investigator of the Odd, and is filled with G-I-A-N-T monster action! Sorry, no superheroes here, only the finest in stories with a bizarre twist. Included are two bonus casefiles about Kinetic Pies, and a rampaging robot. They draw most of their influence from Bob Burden's Flaming Carrot Comics, and Michael Allred's Madman, to let you know where we're coming from. To receive your very own copy of this limited mini (only 250 made!) send them your snail mail address and two stamps. They will send you a mini-comic and a special prize because they're guilty that they can't foot the bill for postage. You can reach their publishing empire at: Zamboni Press, ATTN: Ian Smith, 16842 NW Joscelyn St., Beaverton OR 97006 If you want to jaw with them electronic wise, their e-mail address is megalon@teleport.com. Now returning you to your regularly scheduled newsgroup, without wasting too much bandwidth, I hope. Oh, Comics! #8 is out early this year. They did it for some of the Spirits of Independence stops this year instead of the Mid-Ohio con. Oh, Comics! #8 is a 56 page digest with 2 color cover. The Luck Issue. Contributors include Pam Bliss, Tori McElroy, Tyim Courts, Max Ink, David Vance, Mike Toth, Tim Fischer, Karen O'Donnell, J. Go home! ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Join in the fun! You too can enjoy the intelligent conversations and informative threads that occupy the conferences of the Comic Book Net every day! However, many people who read this e-mag aren't familiar with the Local BBS echo-mail system.... Bulletin Board Systems are scattered everywhere across the USofA, and many of them are free! Chances are, if you have a modem you have the accompanying communications software. Using the Terminal Emulation software that came with your modem, you can dial up one of the many systems linked into CBN (see the listings down a few paragraphs). Most of the boards offer all the message echoes in the Comic Book Network... there are message bases devoted to all the bigger comics publishers, as well as big Small Press and Independent message bases, not to mention sections for general (doesn't even have to be about comics!) conversation. If you are worried about long distance charges, worry no longer! Most if not all the BBS's offer a mail service from which you can download a .QWK packet of recent e-mail to read offline with a program called an offline mail reader. You can read & write messages at your leisure, and then upload your own messages & replies the next time you call your local BBS. There are many .QWK packet readers out there, for every type of computer system. They all give you a better explaination in their documentation than I can. These programs are available all over the Internet and are downloadable from most BBS's. These "mail runs" (dialing up, downloading the mail packet and uploading replies) generally take less than 5 minutes to accomplish, and at the average after-5pm/weekends/holidays long distance phone rates, that is LESS THAN 75›! See? Even less expensive than many of the commercial information services available! :) So what else can you find on free BBS systems? Theres plenty of files for specific types of computers. Some systems also offer other types of message networks ranging from general topics to specific themes like sci-fi, role playing, games, music, etc. And, let's not forget online games. Join into the many different multiplayer games, each system sports different challenges. There's nothing like becoming the most powerful being in a online adventure! And when you _do_ log on, leave a message in The Bullpen conference to ALL, and introduce yourself to us! You're guaranteed to get plenty of replies and all the help you need to join in the fun! Best, --Ry, the editor, with assists from Ed Dukeshire. ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ BBSes Linked into CBN ________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Comic Book Net E-Mag is published weekly by the many participants of The Comic Book Network.
