Technical support E-Mail: Unionway@msn.com Frequently Asked Questions: 1. What is the default code page of UW-DBM 4.0b and how to change it? UW-DBM 4.0b supports Chinese, Japanese and Koreans in the same time when you select CJK fonts for different CJK text blocks. But if the CJK text did not select CJK font (i.e., the font is Times New Roman or other English font), UW-DBM 4.0b will automatically map the default double-byte font to the CJK text. Default code page will determine which CJK font to be set to the default double-byte font. For example, if you set default code page to Big5, Chinese Big5 font will be set to the default double-byte font. UW-DBM 4.0b will automatically map non-CJK font text to default double-byte font. Click first button of UWDBM 4.0b toolbar, you can select the default code page to Big5, GB, HZ, Shift-JIS, JIS and KSC. Also, UW-DBM 4.0b double- byte input program will be set to the new default code page automatically after you changed the default code page. 2. How to set UW-DBM 4.0b to read Chinese in the Internet? You should set UW-DBM 4.0b to Big5, GB or HZ mode depending the Chinese source. For Internet Chinese newsgroup alt.chinese.text, you should set to HZ mode, for alt.chinese.text.big5, you should set to Big5. For a lot of Chinese home page, it will allows you to select Big5/GB/HZ, so you should select anyone then set the UW-DBM 4.0b to the same one. Because HZ mode will compatible with GB mode, so if selected HZ mode, you could view any HZ or GB text correctly (but input program is different). 3. How to change UW-DBM 4.0b to display traditional or simplified Chinese? UW-DBM 4.0b defaultlly set display traditional Chinese for Big5 mode and simplified Chinese for GB or HZ mode . Because JIS mode will compatible with Shift JIS or EUC text which can be dynamically set by click Setup button from UW-DBM 4.0b toolbar. So any JIS, Shift-JIS or EUC text could be displayed correctly. Most of Japanese home page or newsgroup uses JIS and Shift JIS code. UW-DBM 4.0b default setting is support Shift-JIS text in JIS mode. Some Japanese home page or newsgroup uses JIS and EUC code. If you find wrong text, maybe you need switch to EUC or Shift JIS. * For some Japanese home pages, if the text line is too long or text with some unexpected strike-out line, you need to set Netscape browser in the Japanese encoding mode (go to Options|Preferences|Fonts, change 'The Default Encoding is' to Japanese) 5. UW-DBM 4.0b only supports 16 bit applications and 16 bit system controls for Windows NT. That means you can use 16 bit programs, like MS Word 6.0, Netscape 16 bit, etc., to handle CJK. Because system controls (Button, ListBox, Edit, etc.) are 32 bits, so you could not see any Chinese display. If you need to run 32 bit applications, we suggest you to use Windows 95. 8.
