TABLE OF CONTENTS --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.0 System Requirements 2.0 Installation 3.0 Performance and Tuning Tips 4.0 Helpful Hints 5.0 Known Incompatibilities 6.0 Service and Support 7.0 Contest Restrictions 8.0 Install/Uninstall Report 1.0 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS --------------------------------------------------------------------- 1.1 Minimum System Requirements --------------------------------------------------------------------- LANtastic Power Source requires the following hardware: 50 MHz, 486 or greater CPU 2X CD-ROM drive or faster Windows 3.10 or higher or Windows 95 8MB RAM 1MB Video RAM (VRAM) Sound output enabled VGA (640x480 resolution, 256 colors) Running LANtastic Power Source on OS/2 or over a network is not recommended. Call Technical Support if you experience problems under these conditions. 1.2 Running LANtastic Power Source on less than recommended hardware --------------------------------------------------------------------- You can run LANtastic Power Source on a less robust system than the above recommendation (a 486 CPU with a 33 MHz processor, for example), but it will run slowly and you may have to click the buttons several times to get a response. In addition, the system may not respond for several seconds, especially if it is busy reading information from the CD-ROM or hard drive. Check the lights on your drive to see if you need to wait for a slow system to catch up with you. Also, documents may take a long time to load and QuickTime videos may play unevenly. In some cases, there will be a video with no sound, in others there may be sound with no video. On systems with limited memory, there may only be enough free memory to show the video or play the sound, but not enough memory to play both. 2.0 INSTALLATION --------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.1 Installing LANtastic Power Source --------------------------------------------------------------------- To install LANtastic Power Source: * Insert the LANtastic Power Source CD-ROM * Windows 3.10 or 3.11 users: From the Windows Program Manager, click on "File" and choose "Run." * Windows 95 users: From the "Start" button on the taskbar, choose "Run." * In the window type d:\setup\install.exe (where "d" is the drive letter of your CD-ROM). * Follow the set up instructions that appear on your screen. * You should accept all the default settings during installation, clicking "Continue" after reading each message on the screen. Note: Due to the intensive use of system resources during the installation process, do not install while running LANtastic. Note 1: An additional copy of the installer (install.exe) has been placed into the root directory of the CD. This is for the convenience of those who wish to run it from the root directory. It is exactly the same as the installer that runs from \setup\install.exe. Note 2: You will need a minimum of 19 MB of disk space to install the minimum version of LANtastic Power Source. You will need 3.0 MB free on your drive that is currently running Windows and you will need 16.0 MB free on the drive that holds your TEMP files. If your temporary files are created on the same drive as the drive from which you are currently running Windows, you will need 3.0 MB free on that drive. This space is required even if you elect to install LANtastic Power Source on some other drive as this space is needed by the installer for temporary files, for the QuickTime files that must be placed into the Windows System directory, and for the Adobe Acrobat files which must be placed into the Windows directory. 2.2 LANtastic Power Source and Your System Files ------------------------------------------------------------------ The first time you run the LANtastic Power Source installer, it backs up your Windows system files. WIN.INI is backed up to WIN.AR2 and SYSTEM.INI is backed up to SYSTEM.AR2. These back-up files are never changed even during subsequent installs of the CD-ROM. During the remainder of the installation, or on any subsequent installs, the LANtastic Power Source installer copies your WIN.INI file to WIN.ART and your SYSTEM.INI to SYSTEM.ART. This backup process happens every time you run the LANtastic Power Source installer. This two-part backup ensures that, at anytime, you can return to either of your original system configurations; before you ever ran the LANtastic Power Source installer, or to your system configuration before the most recent installation of LANtastic Power Source. 2.3 Multiple Versions of QuickTime® for Windows ---------------------------------------------- The LANtastic Power Source installer installs the latest version of QuickTime for Windows available (version 2.03). During the install, the installer searches for outdated versions of QuickTime and gives you the opportunity to remove these outdated versions. We strongly recommend that you remove any outdated versions of QuickTime for Windows. The new version of QuickTime is placed in your Windows System directory and will be available to all of your QuickTime applications. If the installer finds any previous version(s) of QuickTime on your system, it checks all of your local drives, it shows you a dialog that gives you the option of keeping these version(s) or deleting them. For either option you choose, the installer will ensure that the most recent version of QuickTime is in your Windows System directory. This will not interfere with your other QuickTime applications and will make available the newest, best performing version. 2.4 Special Individual Installations ---------------------------------------------------------------------- The LANtastic Power Source installer is actually three separate installers: LANtastic Power Source (with Proposal Generator), QuickTime for Windows, and the LANual infobase. Normally, you will install all of this software with the main Power Source installer that is located at \setup\install.exe. You may, however wish to install each of these software items individually. Run the following programs to install this software separately: LANtastic Power Source (with Proposal Generator) \setup\stub.exe QuickTime for Windows \setup\QT203\qtinstal.exe LANual infobase \dbase\setup.exe Adobe Acrobat \setup\acrobat\acroread.exe 3.0 PERFORMANCE TUNING TIPS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.1 Background Processes and Applications ---------------------------------------------------------------------- When you want to get the best performance from LANtastic Power Source, disable any applications that run in the background (e.g., Microsoft Office, Print Manager, power management, screen savers, clocks, automatic file transfer utilities and mail systems). These kinds of applications need CPU time and may slow down LANtastic Power Source. 3.2 Digital Video ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LANtastic Power Source includes several digital videos. Digital video puts great demands on a computer's resources -- the CPU and disk drives work constantly while a digital video is playing. For best results, disable the types of applications listed above (section 3.1) when running digital video. 3.3 Memory Management ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Testing has revealed that LANtastic Power Source runs best on Windows 3.1 with a SMARTDRV.EXE setting of 2688k. The recommended swap file setting is 30MB. 4.0 HELPFUL HINTS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LANtastic Power Source has several special features that may not be obvious. For optimum performance, we suggest that you follow these helpful hints when running LANtastic Power Source. 1. Quit all other applications to free up memory. 2. To open a file, double click on the file name or choose Open at the document description window. 3. If the file you selected is an Acrobat PDF file, Acrobat Reader will automatically be launched. Use the Alt-Tab feature in Windows® to switch back to the main interface without closing Acrobat. Use this feature to avoid having to launch and quit Acrobat Reader. Please note that your ability to open multiple PDFs is limited by your computer's memory. You can press Alt-F4 to close out of all Acrobat files. 4. Use the toolbar in Acrobat Reader to enlarge, shrink, or print Acrobat files. 5. Use the 0-7 numbers at the top of your keyboard to adjust the volume of your audio. Note: To use the numeric keyboard to set volume, the number lock must be "On." If the number lock is "Off," the 5 key will exit Power Source. 6. Refer to the Guided Tour for a multimedia walk-through of the Power Source features. 7. To install the evaluation software, you will first need to create program diskettes as indicated in the document description windows. For best results, read the corresponding product manual before installing the evaluation software. 8. For portability, load the LANtastic Support Library to your notebook computer's hard drive, or run it directly off the CD if you have a notebook with a CD-ROM drive. 9. Use the Proposal Generator to produce professional bids and proposals for your clients. You can preload your company logo, principals, legal terms and conditions, and point and click on LANtastic products to automate your proposal process. 10. The Power Source Index works just like the index of a book. Simply select the index button and you'll see the list window from which you can make your selection. 11. Please read the "ReadMe.txt" file to learn more tips about running LANtastic Power Source. 5.0 KNOWN INCOMPATIBILITIES --------------------------------------------------------------------- LANtastic Power Source is a sophisticated software product and, as with all software, not everything works exactly as expected. Below is a list of the known problems with the current release of LANtastic Power Source. 5.1 System Requirements --------------------------------------------------------------------- To correctly run LANtastic Power Source, refer to the requirements list in section 1.1. If your system varies from this hardware and software specification, LANtastic Power Source may not operate correctly. 5.2 QuickTime Digital Video Compatibility --------------------------------------------------------------------- Not every video adapter nor every video driver is completely compatible with digital video. If you experience any of the following problems with digital video on LANtastic Power Source, you may have an incompatible hardware or software configuration: No video picture, no sound with the video, very jerky and uneven video playback, sound that starts and stops, video that starts and stops, system hangs or General Protection Faults (GPFs) in your video drivers' module. If you experience any of these problems there are several things you can do: Run the video player that is in the Quicktime for Windows program group and open one of the digital videos that are on the LANtastic Power Source CD. The path to the movies is: \POWERSRC\MOVIES. Open and play one of the three videos. If you experience a problem with the video or the sound, it is very likely that you have an incompatible video system. Open the QuickTime ReadMe file that is in your QuickTime for Windows program group and check to see if your hardware and software are supported. Be sure that your monitor is set to the VGA setting (256 colors and 640x480 resolution) and try running LANtastic Power Source again. 5.3 Installing with a system set to greater than 256 colors -------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have your system set to run in millions of colors and you experience problems during the install, set your system to 256 colors, 640 x 480 mode, restart and run the install again. The LANtastic Power Source program will run in 256, thousands, or millions of colors but you may experience problems with the installer if you install on a system set to anything greater than 256 colors. 5.4 Cannot read from drive X, Retry or Cancel -------------------------------------------------------------------- When you install LANtastic Power Source, it stores the drive letter of your CD-ROM for future use. When you run LANtastic Power Source, it retrieves this stored drive letter and checks to see if there is a LANtastic Power Source CD at that drive location. If LANtastic Power Source does not find a CD at that location, it searches all attached drives for a valid LANtastic Power Source CD. During this search process, you may see an alert dialog from Windows saying: Cannot read from drive X, Retry or Cancel? Simply choose "Cancel" as many times as you see the dialog. LANtastic Power Source will find the CD and run. Some CD-ROM drivers reserve more than one drive letter for themselves even though they are only one physical device. If LANtastic Power Source searches through your available drives looking for your CD-ROM drive and it encounters a CD driver that requires more than one drive letter, you will see a message from Windows saying: Cannot read from drive X, Retry or Cancel? Again, simply choose "Cancel" as many times as you see the dialog. LANtastic Power Source will find the CD and run. You will see this message only once because LANtastic Power Source stores your CD-ROM drive letter for later use. If you subsequently change your CD-ROM drive letter assignment, LANtastic Power Source will again search for your CD and you will see the "Cannot read from drive X" dialog again. Simply choose Cancel as many times as requested and LANtastic Power Source will again relink to your CD-ROM. 5.5 Digital Video Window Does Not Update Properly ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If digital video is showing in the LANtastic Power Source content window and you switch to Windows and then back to LANtastic Power Source, the Windows desktop may show in the digital video window. To clear the digital video window, simply play the video or switch to another topic, then back again. Digital video is very demanding on your computer systems' resources. Depending on the speed of your processor, you may experience a delay if you attempt to switch to another application while digital video is playing. For best results in this case, please exit the section that is showing digital video or wait until the video is finished playing. 5.6 Some Documents Do Not Load ------------------------------------------------------------------------ If you have other applications open concurrently with LANtastic Power Source, you may not be able to launch documents. If you select a document then click the launch button and nothing seems to happen, you probably do not have enough free memory. You can correct this by quitting any other running applications and relaunching the document. If you have enough memory and documents still do not load, there may be a problem with the installation of the Adobe Acrobat Reader software. Reinstall the Acrobat software and try again. Note: you can install the Acrobat software itself without doing a complete reinstall of Power Source. From the Program manager: 1. Choose File:Run... 2. type X:\SETUP\ACROBAT\ACROREAD.EXE in the dialog box (where X is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive) 3. click "OK" 4. follow the prompts to reinstall Adobe Acrobat.exe 5.7 Low Memory ------------------------------------------------------------------------- LANtastic Power Source is a sophisticated software product that can put heavy demands on your computers resources. If your systems' memory is limited you may experience problems with the performance of LANtastic Power Source. These problems may include: uneven playback of the digital video, video with no sound, sound but no video, long wait times as documents are loaded, documents do not load and no error message is shown. In extremely low memory situations, it is possible that LANtastic Power Source could crash or even fail to run. You can analyze the memory situation on your machine by going to a DOS prompt and typing: "MEM /C". This will display the memory usage on your machine. In the summary section for the line describing "Total Under 1MB", the third column, "Free Memory", will be a figure in the range of 540,000 down to as low as 320,000. This is the amount of actual memory available to run your system. (even if you have 20 or 30MB installed, these figures are what is important.) Any figure less then 380,000 means that you are in a low memory situation. You can free up memory by looking at the first part of the memory display. It will tell you specifically how memory is being used on your system. Deinstall, by changing settings in AUTOEXEC.BAT or in the drivers section, usually the [386Enh] section, of your SYSTEM.INI file. Typically, it is your networking drivers that require large blocks of this memory. If you are experiencing any of the problems above when you run LANtastic Power Source, try restarting your system with the Network deinstalled. 5.8 Dashboard ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- LANtastic Power Source is not compatible with Dashboard. 6.0 SERVICE AND SUPPORT ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have any comments or suggestions regarding LANtastic Power Source, please fax us at 520-670-7492 For technical questions and support, contact the Artisoft BBS at 520-884-8648 For further information, please download POWERSRC.TXT from the Artisoft BBS at 520-884-8648. 7.0 CONTEST RESTRICTIONS -------------------------------------------------------------------------- No purchase necessary.
