This is a Windows 3.1 hypertext version of the NOCCC newsletter, 'Orange Bytes,' published by the North Orange County Computer Club (NOCCC), in Orange County, California. The files are used in conjunction with the Windows 3.1 program 'winhelp.exe'. The electronic 'Orange Bytes' can be viewed with Windows 3.1. These files can be viewed with the Windows Help program, winhelp.exe. To use, open the Windows File Manager and double click on the file bytew025.hlp. I will listen to any suggestions. I would also like to know how many people are using the electronic 'Orange Bytes.' You could send me a postcard and let me know which version of Windows you are using. Starting with January 1993 the Electronic Orange Bytes will require the Windows 3.1 winhelp.exe program. This will allow us to do more with the Electronic Orange Bytes. Users of Windows 3.0 may already have the new winhelp.exe. Some applications provide it. To check which winhelp.exe you are using, at Help's menu bar select 'Help', then 'About Help.' The version for Help should be 3.1xxx. The naming of the Orange Bytes help file has changed. We also have a DOS (no longer) and OS/2 versions now and there must be a way to see the difference in the name of the ZIP files they come in. That name change is passed on to the help file itself. For the Windows version it is: BYTEWMMY.HLP. The 'W' is for Windows. The 'MM' is the month and 'Y' is the year. That's it. The ZIP file name is the same except the file extension is ZIP instead of HLP. So the Windows version for February 1995 will be BYTEW025.ZIP. A couple? (6) of changes: 1. A new Icon. 2. Under the 'Edit' menu bar item their is an addition 'Copy Topic.' This 'Copy Topic' will copy the current Topic to the Clipboard. No need to select text and then copy. Its very fast. If you do need to copy the entire Topic use the 'Copy Topic' command. 3. More graphics. We could have had graphics in earlier versions but we didn't. Their was a reason and it had to do with the Help Compiler used to create the Help files for Windows version 3.0. We will have more graphics when they are in BMP format. So far none have been presented. PS: We try to limit the size of the ZIPed file to aprox. 150KB. This allows a 2400 baud modem to download the ZIP file in about 10 minutes. Any longer than this and long distance charges start to mount up. Because of this we have to limit the amount of graphics. For some reason graphics take up a lot space in a Help file. 4. The Button Bar has additional items for your convience. Look at the Hints topic for what has been added to the button bar and the keyboard accelerator keys. 4a A Popup menu. This memu is enabled with the right mouse button is you are right handed or left mouse button if you are left handed. The 'm' key will also enable the popup menu. 4b The Index will now be a seperate window. Try it, you'll see. 5. A new 'EVENTS' section. If you have an EVENT to announce, let us know. From the Front Page click on 'Club Stuff', then click on 'Upcoming Events'. 6. We now include the Classified Ads that you normally see at the end the standard Bytes. From the Front Page click on 'Club Stuff', then click on 'Classified Ads'. 7. For Club BBS Information check under BBS Items. One of the items is a listing of the directories numbers and what they hold. What to look for in this months edition. * Discounts at local computer stores. * All versions of the Bytes would like to see more general articles on and about computers. If you have an interesting experience or thoughts about people and computers we would like to see them. Send your articles to Sam Miller. Sam is the editor of the 'Orange Bytes.' More information is inside the 'Bytes.' * The Hints Topic discusses those extra conviences I have added to the help file to make life a little easier. Do a Search for Hints or from the Menu Bar select Help, Using Orange Bytes. One of the new conviences I have added is a seperate window (called a secondary window) for the Index. The second new feature is a popup menu (called a floating menu.) The 'M' key or the right mouse button if your right handed or the left mouse button if you're left handed will enable the popup menu.
