One of the most enduring names in pop music, Dion is perhaps the consummate performer, combining songwriting excellence with a distinctive voice. A native of Bronx, Dion first burst onto the pop music scene as a member of the Belmonts, releasing a string of classics such as "I Wonder Why," "A Teenager In Love" and "Where Or When." As a solo artist, Dion continued his hit-making with such 60's anthems as "Runaround Sue," "The Wanderer" and "Lovers Who Wander." In the late sixties, Dion successfully captured the spirit of the times with the release of "Abraham, Martin and John," a moving tribute to three of history's greatest men, While he boasts a loyal following of original fans, Dion nonetheless continues to attract legions of new fans from coast to coast. In total, Dion had twenty-one Top 40 hits in the ten year span beginning in 1958. Boasting a career that never slowed down, Brenda Lee is as much an influence today as she was in the mid-1950s, when she helped bring rock and rock into the cultural mainstream. With world-wide record sales scaling the 100 million mark, Lee began her career in 1956 at age 11. Devoted to her craft, Lee is cited as being a major influence on artists as diverse as Cyndi Lauper and Barbara Mandrell. In fact, Lee in the 1980's has appeared frequently on television and shared the stage with such stars as the Statler Brothers, The Mandrell Sisters, Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson. Some of Lee's timeless classics include, "I'm Sorry," "Sweet Nothin's, "As Usual," and ther six million selling holiday single, "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree." One of the early sixties top recording artists, Gene Pitney is one of rock and rolls most successful singer/songwriters. As a recording artist, Pitney scored big on the charts with such hits as "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance," "Only Love Can Break A Heart," "It Hurts To Be In Love" and "Town Without Pity." Pitney's sharp ear for good material encouraged him to record songs by Burt bacharach, Carole King and Randy Newman, when each were struggling unknowns in the business. As a songwriter, Pitney wrote the 1961 Ricky Nelson smash, "Hello, Mary Lou," as well as Bobby Vee's classic, "Red Rubber Ball." During his stellar career, Pitney logged 16 Top 40 singles and released 47 albums in the United States. One of the first white artists to achieve success on the R & B charts, KC won four Grammys and an American Music Award. A one-man hit factory for South Florida's T.K. "I've been singing since the age of three," she said. Eventually, Houston joined a group formed from her church choir and made a recording on Capital, "Tell It Like It Is." Her debut album, "Sunshower," followed. In the 70's, Houstons signed with Motown. Her breakthrough hit, "Don't Leave Me This Way" launched her career. Branching out into other areas, Houston also acts, writes and arranges. Five brothers make up the singing group Tavares. Beginning in 1974 with their first album, "Check It Out," and continuing with " On Hard Core Poetry" and "In The City," Tavares created a string of hit ballads. Early chart toppers are "Remember What I Told You to Forget," "It Only takes A Minute," and "She's Gone." Etess Arena. One of the hottest, and most original groups to burst onto the music scene in the 1970's, Village People captured worldwide audiences duing the late 70's with such smash dance singles as "Macho Man," "YMCA," "In The Navy" and "Go West." After racking up multiple platinum and gold records, the six- man visual extravaganza continued to tour successfully throughout the eighties, and with a 70's resurgence presently occuring across the country, are "Cruisin'" strong in the nineties. While their musical and vocal styles boast their own definitive style, it is the sheer visual appeal of Village People which allowed them to capture a generation of fans. Decked out as a military rep, construction worker, cowboy, native American and cop, the sextet is once again luring a new following of fans, many of which were still in diapers when the group was at it's peak. Recently, Village People have been quite busy, appearing on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, releasing albums worldwide, and returning once again to the forefront of the entertainment arena. One of the staples of the seventies with her smash disco hit, "Shame," Evelyn "Champagne" King has continued to have success throughout the past two decades. After the 1977 release of the crossover "Shame," King rolled into the eighties with such hits as "I Don't Know If It's Right," "Love Come Down" and "Hold On." King's latest effort, "The Girl Next Door," is her 11th album and covers a wide range of material, offering a touch of something for everyone. A unique blend of pulsating beats, catchy melodies and vocal harmonies, The Trammps were formed in 1972 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Although the group achieved considerable success early in their careers, recording several hits with Buddah Records, it wasn't until their debut album on Atlantic Records, "Where The Happy People Go," that the Trammps sparkled in the national spotlight. The album, which included hit singles, "Disco Party," "Hooked For Life," and "Soul Searchin' Time," was showered with honors, winning Best Disco Album, Best Disco Artists and Best Disco Single. Not content to rest on their laurels, the Trammps follow-up release, "Disco Inferno," catapulted the group to the top of the charts, earning them their first gold record and earned the title track distinction of "the disco party anthem of the 70's." "Disco Inferno" was included on the soundtrack of Paramount Picture's "Saturday Night Fever," giving the Trammps their first Grammy Award for Best Album.
