QUICKEN 5 FOR WINDOWS, RELEASE 5.0e =================================== This README file explains how to update your version of Quicken 5 for Windows to release 5.0e, which corrects a number of problems in earlier releases, including the problems with Subcategory Merge and File Validate. For a detailed list of changes included in this release, go to the end of this file and review the sections titled "CHANGES MADE TO QUICKEN 5 FOR WINDOWS IN THIS RELEASE" . The following products can be updated: Quicken 5.0 for Windows Quicken Deluxe 5.0 for Windows Floppy Quicken Deluxe 5.0 for Windows CD Quicken Financial Suite CD STEP 1: CHECK THE RELEASE NUMBER OF YOUR VERSION OF QUICKEN =========================================================== 1. Start Quicken 5 for Windows. 2. Choose "About Quicken" from the Help menu. 3. Look at the lower right corner of the window. If it says "Release 5.0d" or lower, proceed to the next step. If it says "Release 5.0e," you already have the latest release and you do not need to install this update. 4. Exit Quicken 5 for Windows. Also, if you have Quicken Deluxe or Quicken Financial Suite, exit all applications you are currently running (such as Quicken Home Inventory, Finance 101, or Quicken Financial Planner). STEP 2: DOWNLOAD AND COPY THE UPDATE FILE ========================================= 1. Create a directory called UPDATE. Win 3.1: From File Manager, choose Create Directory from the File menu, type "c:\update", and press Enter. Win 95: From the Windows Explorer, click the C drive icon, choose New from the File menu, select Folder, type "update", and then press Enter. 2. Through your online service select the apppropriate file to download. Here are the files for the Quicken For Windows 5.0 products: Quicken Regular: the file is qw50e.exe Quicken Deluxe Floppy: the file is dlx50e.exe Quicken Deluxe CD or Quicken Financial Suite CD: the file is cd50e.exe 3. Download the update file to your UPDATE directory. 4. Extract the update file. From Win 3.1 File Manager or Win 95 Windows Explorer, double-click the UPDATE directory, double-click the update file. In Win 3.1, select Refresh from the Window menu. There will now be four files in the update directory: UPDATE.EXE, PATCHW.DLL, QW50E.EXE (or DLX50E.EXE or CD50E.EXE), and QW50E.RTP (or DLX50E.RTP or CD50E.RTP) STEP 2: INSTALL RELEASE 5.0e ============================ 1. Run the update file. Win 3.1: From the Windows Program Manager, choose Run from File menu. Then type c:\update\update.exe and click OK. Win 95: Click the Start button, then choose Run. Then type c:\update\update.exe and click OK. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen. When the Locate System to Update window appears, double-click the directory containing your Quicken 5 for Windows program files. For example, if you installed Quicken in the default directory, it was installed into C:\QUICKENW. Find the directory, double-click it and then press Enter. When the update program displays this message: "OK to update to Quicken 5 for Windows, release 5.0e," click Yes. Do not change any options. 3. If the update program displays this message: "Patch warning. Old File does not exist," click OK to close the message box and continue the update. The update program is trying to update a Quicken Deluxe or Quicken Financial Suite application that you have not installed. STEP 3: CHECK THAT RELEASE 5.0e IS PROPERLY INSTALLED ===================================================== 1. Start Quicken 5 for Windows. 2. Choose "About Quicken" from the Help menu. 3. Look at the lower right corner of the window. If it says "Release 5.0e," release 5.0e was properly installed. 4. If it says "Release 5.0," double-check the directory in which Quicken 5 for Windows is located and repeat "STEP 2: INSTALL RELEASE 5.0e" above. STEP 4: REMOVE THE FILES IN THE UPDATE DIRECTORY ================================================ Once you confirm that release 5.0e was successfully installed, you can safely remove the contents of the UPDATE directory and then delete the UPDATE directory. CHANGES MADE TO QUICKEN 5 FOR WINDOWS IN THIS RELEASE ===================================================== Performance 1. For Windows 95, NT and OS/2, Quicken will no longer take up all of the CPU cycles when Quicken is idle. CheckFree 1. Email will no longer allow lines to wrap and limits lines to 60 characters so they will not be truncated during transmission. Validate 1. Validate will correct duplicate transaction IDs in an online account. Online Banking 1. Online Banking now handles error conditions that occur during transmission. File Operations 1. The message after successfully completing File Restore now instructs users to open the file if no file is currently open. This was done to reduce confusion with the File Restore feature. 2. An error message will now be displayed if File Restore or File Copy fail. Reports 1. The Copy to Clipboard now no longer drops the first two lines of the report. 2. Reports will now pick up the opening balances of accounts that have the Opening Balance as the sole transaction. Win 95 Shell Extension 1. Quicken now bypasses writing Reminder information to the qwshellx.ini file during start up. This was done to avoid some intermittent GPFs that could be caused by reading in corrupted Reminder information.
